Industry recognizes wireless sensornetworks as one of the next major technical and economical shifts in automation and control systems. Industrial applications need performance assurances of wireless communication, which is hard to attain given the variability of the environment where such applications are deployed. In this paper, we quantify the impact of environmental conditions, namely temperature, fog, and rain on wireless communication links. We further investigate the influence of industrial casing on communication, evaluating an ATEX enclosure intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Knowledge of the potential impact of environmental conditions and special casings provides an important input to robust communication design during deployment planning.

The recent advances and wide availability of wireless access technologies and inter-vehicle communication systems are expected to culminate in the integration of different wireless networks such as the IEEE 802.11, 3G/4G, and WiMax, multimedia and sensornetworks in the nextgeneration vehicular networks. However, due to high mobility of vehicles, several issues remain to be resolved before real-time multimedia based applications over VANETs become a reality. In this paper, we propose to study the provision of multimedia support in VANET, and present an efficient Path Stability Protocol, which we refer to as PASTA, as an additional module to MAC layer protocols that aims at preventing path breaks between vehicles that are frequently within reach of each other but not necessarily on a continuous basis. We discuss the implementation of our protocol, and report on its performance evaluation using a wide range of realistic scenarios. Our results indicate that our PASTA protocol decreases significantly the end-to-end latency as well as the network jitter.

Wireless sensornetworks (WSNs) consist of a network of wireless nodes that have the capability to sense a parameter of interest. The sensed parameter is relayed to a base station through the network formed amongst these nodes. The devices used are typically characterized by low cost, low power and are rugged in operation. They are commonly referred to as motes in the WSN domain. The mote integrates programming, computation, communication, and sensing onto a single system and provides an easy user interface for operating and deploying it. The paper presents such a design which minimizes cost, size and current consumption, thus enhancing the life time of the mote.

Existing security research in wireless sensornetworks is based on specific assumptions about the nodes and the network environment that are tied to specific usage scenarios. Typical scenarios consider sensor nodes that are immobile and have pre-defined communication patterns. We argue that node mobility is a realistic characteristic of sensor nodes that needs to be taken into consideration in future sensornetworks. Mobility capabilities can address the objective challenges raised in mission-critical applications, such as in disaster relief, where their environment characteristics fluctuate over time. It is imperative to investigate the way security is affected in mobile sensornetworks and identify the challenges that will need to be addressed in future security protocol design. We present our vision for future sensornetworks through a realistic scenario and discuss security gaps that are present in existing research for nextgenerationsensornetworks.
