Home networking environment is acquiring more and more relevance from the business and technical perspectives. Currently users are left alone in coping with the networking and integration intricacies of putting in place a really working home network solution. Moreover things are getting even more complicated due to the introduction in the homes of new technologies like sensor networks and to competing ecosystems that falter to cooperate (computer vendors, telcos, consumer electronics). There is an urgent need to relief Users from the burden of managing the home networking environment. In this context the autonomic architectures represent the enabling solution because an autonomic network is capable of sensing and adapting to environment changes whilst performing self-* capabilities (e.g,. configuration, healing, optimization, protection). This paper presents technical challenges, opportunities and some architectural and application scenarios for the introduction of autonomic capabilities in the home networking environment. © 2009 IEEE.

Multimodal user interface capable to perceive speech, movements, poses and gestures of meeting participants in order to determinate their needs provides the natural and intuitively understandable way of interaction with the developed intelligent meeting room. Awareness of the room about spatial position of the participants, their current activities, and roles in a current event, their preferences helps to predict more accurately the intentions and needs of participants. The accomplished integration of Nokia mobile phones with the sensor network and smart services allowed users to control effectors, audio/video and other facilities from outside. Some scenarios of multimodal interaction with the room as well as issues of adaptation of user interface to limitations of mobile phone browser are discussed.

It is expected that next generation networks (NGNs) will offer seamless interoperability among heterogeneous access technologies in order to provide ubiquitous access. In such settings, short range technologies may be used in order to extend the coverage area of cellular systems while cooperative diversity can improve the efficiency of the wireless systems. An advanced, backward compatible, with the 802.11 standard, MAC protocol for cooperative ARQ scenarios in NGNs sets the research framework for this work. The functionalities of the RCSMA protocol 1 will be enhanced and the derived analytical models will be validated at the UNITE Virtual Distributed Testbed (VDT) (2).

Data generation in wireless sensor networks could be bursty as it is dictated by the presence or absence of events of interest that generate these data. While conventional sensor nodes possessed only one radio interface, next generation sensor nodes are expected to have two (possibly more) radio interfaces, each with different range, capacity, and power consumption. Equipping sensor nodes with dual radios has its own benefits and can be quite useful in handling bursty traffic while at the same time satisfying the application's delivery requirements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive interface switch agent that intelligently selects the interface to be used for data transmission at a sensor node based on the data burst length while taking into consideration power consumption, throughput, and end-to-end delay. The proposed work generalizes earlier works in this area to enable both the source nodes and intermediate data forwarding nodes to initiate the activation of high power radios so that they can be utilized to a higher degree for converge-cast communication. We have performed extensive simulations with sensor nodes containing both IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 compatible radios. Our simulation results indicate that: (i) the end-to-end delay and throughput achieved by the proposed interface switch agent are comparable to those achieved in a network of sensor nodes equipped only with IEEE 802.11 radios, (ii) the energy consumed in the network using our interface switch agent is a fraction of that consumed in a network of the IEEE 802.11 sensor nodes and is comparable to that of sensors using only IEEE 802.15.4 radios.

As communication systems and technology become more advanced and complex, it will be increasingly important to focus on users' individual needs. Personalization can range from simple cosmetic factors such as customised ring tones to the complex tailoring of the presentation of a shopping web site to a user's personal interests, or highly personalized eHealth systems including sensor networks. Personalization and effective user profile management will be necessary to ensure the uptake and success of new services and devices and it is therefore important to focus on the users' requirements in this area and define solutions that meet these requirements. This paper describes an architectural framework for user profile management and explains a solution for context sensitive automatic activation of user profiles.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been considered to be the next generation paradigm of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems due to its low cost, high scalability and flexibility. However, some inherent limitations of WSN such as low-bandwidth wireless communication, limited resources on wireless sensor nodes, must be addressed to meet the generally high requirements of SHM. Distributed in-network processing has been widely accepted as a solution to this problem. However, the drawbacks of existing distributed algorithms, such as the low sensitivity, the dependency on accurate structural model, the incapability of handling various environmental conditions, et al., greatly constrained their practical applications. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale strategy in WSNs for SHM applications. The approach, called the ACF-CCF, utilizes the autocorrelation function of individual sensor node to detect the existence of damage and the cross-correlation function of designated node pairs to obtain damage location. Through simulation and laboratory test, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated. Compared with existing distributed SHM algorithms, the method is energy efficient, model free and is robust to various environmental conditions. © 2009 IEEE.

next generation communication networks are moving towards autonomous infrastructures that are capable of working unattended under dynamically changing conditions. The new network architecture involves interactions among unsophisticated entities which may be characterized by constrained resources. From this mass of interactions collective unpredictable behavior emerges in terms of traffic load variations and link capacity fluctuations, leading to congestion. Biological processes found in nature exhibit desirable properties e.g. self-adaptability and robustness, thus providing a desirable basis for such computing environments. This study focuses on streaming applications in sensor networks and on how congestion can be prevented by regulating the rate of each traffic flow based on the Lotka-Volterra population model. Our strategy involves minimal exchange of information and computation burden and is simple to implement at the individual node. Performance evaluations reveal that our approach achieves adaptability to changing traffic loads, scalability and fairness among flows, while providing graceful performance degradation as the offered load increases.

The National Airspace System (NAS) is rapidly expanding and straining the capabilities of current communications technologies. The need to implement increased capacity, security and network enabled information sharing in limited spectrum will pose a significant challenge. To address these issues in the next generation (nextGen) airspace and develop a robust future communications infrastructure, a new airport surface wireless communications system is necessary. Through an initiative known as the Future communications Study, the FAA and NASA have endorsed the IEEE 802.16e standard as the basis for implementing future airport surface wireless communication networks. In November 2007, the World Radiocommunications conference approved the addition of an aeronautical mobile route service frequency allocation in the 5091-5150 MHz band to support development of these 802.16e-based communications networks. Sensis Corporation and NASA Glenn Research Center currently operate a nextGen communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) Test Bed in Cleveland, OH. A critical component of the Test Bed operation is an IEEE 802.11a-based wireless mesh data communications network. Through experimental and empirical analysis, the findings from the current operation of the 802.11a-based network and recommendations for upgrade to 802.16e-based capabilities for airport surface wireless communications are provided. ©2009 IEEE.

In this paper, we address the problem of lifetime maximization under coverage and connectivity requirements for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks where different targets need to be covered (sensed) by different types of wireless sensors running at possibly different sampling rates as well as different initial energy reserve. The problem is particularly challenging since we need to consider both connectivity requirement and so-called target Q-coverage requirement, i.e., different targets may require different sensing quality in terms of the number of transducers, sampling rate, sensing data rate, etc. In this paper, we formulate a lifetime maximization problem, which is general and allows unprecedented diversity in coverage requirements, sampling rates, transmission energy consumption models, communication ranges, and target sensing ranges. Our approach is based on column generation, where a column corresponding to a feasible solution;our idea is to find a column with steepest ascent in lifetime, based on which we iteratively search for the maximum lifetime solution. Through extensive simulations, we systematically study the effect of sampling rates, transmission energy consumption models, communication ranges, and target sensing ranges on the lifetime.
