Route optimization support in mobile networks is one of the most important concerns in next generation networks (NGNs). NGNs require an efficient route optimization scheme, optimized specially to support nesting of mobile networks. We propose an Extended Mobile IPv6 route optimization (EMIP) scheme to enhance the performance of nested mobile networks. EMIP scheme is based on MIPv6 route optimization and the root Mobile Router (MR) performs all the route optimization tasks on behalf of all active Mobile Network Nodes (MNNs). Thus, the network movement remains transparent to sub MRs and MNNs. It modifies only MRs and MNNs leaving other entities untouched and is more efficient than the Network Mobility Basic Support protocol (NEMO BS). We carried out extensive simulation study to show that EMIP performs better than NEMO BS and Reverse Routing Header (RRH, a well established route optimization protocol) with respect to TCP throughput and round trip time. EMIP effectively reduces unnecessary large travelling route and overhead, thereby enhances performance. It also achieves route optimization between the mobile network nodes inside nested mobile network.

Usually wireless communication is preferred to wired communication within caves considering the known difficulties of laying wires and related equipment in such rugged environments. Nevertheless both the inner structures of the caves and RF challenging conditions within the caves make the use of wireless solutions, like walkie-talkies or CB radios, deficient. In this paper, we propose a Wireless Multimedia sensor Network (WMSN) based communication architecture which can guarantee a desired level of uninterrupted connectivity and communication quality. Our proposed system, which is called In-Cave Wireless communication System (ICWCS), consists of backbone nodes and mobile nodes which design is based on our previous general purpose wireless sensor node VF1A. Backbone nodes are basically responsible for the connectivity within the ICWCS network, whereas mobile nodes have similar functionality like cellular phones. ICWCS provides reliable and efficient communication within caves.

The emerging vehicular networks in the forms of intra-vehicle (InV), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications are fast becoming a reality and critical data is being exchanged with-inside and with-outside vehicle via vehicular networks. In this paper, we propose integrated info-security solutions for vehicular networks. The proposed solutions will ensure that data exchanged with-inside and with-outside the vehicle is protected from abuse and security attacks. The solution will design an integrated data security gatekeeper with wire interfaces and wireless interfaces. With wire/wireless interfaces, the gatekeeper will connect to the various networks and sensors inside a vehicle, and communicate with infrastructure and other vehicles for various applications, such as active safety, infotainment, traffic control, remote diagnosis, etc; With wireless interfaces, the gatekeeper will harmoniously integrate with brought-in devices and beamed-in services.

Wireless sensor networks will play an important role in the next generation pervasive computing. But the character of wireless communication brings a great challenge to the security management measures used in the communication protocols. These measures are different from conventional network security management methods. This paper proposed a security management model for self-organizing wireless sensor networks based on intrusion detection. It can prevent most of attacks. Then an analysis of each layer of networks in our security model is discussed and the security management measures in the data link layer and network layer are described in detail especially.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been considered to be the next generation paradigm of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems due to its low cost, high scalability and flexibility. However, some inherent limitations of WSN such as low-bandwidth wireless communication, limited resources on wireless sensor nodes, must be addressed to meet the generally high requirements of SHM. Distributed in-network processing has been widely accepted as a solution to this problem. However, the drawbacks of existing distributed algorithms, such as the low sensitivity, the dependency on accurate structural model, the incapability of handling various environmental conditions, et al., greatly constrained their practical applications. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale strategy in WSNs for SHM applications. The approach, called the ACF-CCF, utilizes the autocorrelation function of individual sensor node to detect the existence of damage and the cross-correlation function of designated node pairs to obtain damage location. Through simulation and laboratory test, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated. Compared with existing distributed SHM algorithms, the method is energy efficient, model free and is robust to various environmental conditions.

Selfish node behavior can diminish the reliability of a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) or a wireless sensor network (WSN). Efficient detection of such behavior is therefore essential. One approach is to construct a reputation scheme, which has network nodes determine and share reputation values associated with each node;these values can next be used as input to a routing algorithm to avoid end-to-end routes containing ill-reputed nodes. The main problem lies in handling possibly conflicting evidence of a particular node's behavior so as to enable rapid detection of all selfish nodes. To this end, we explore the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence (DST) as part of a novel framework called DST-SDF and discuss some of its advantages and disadvantages. It differs from existing reputation schemes in that the well-known but faulty watchdog mechanism is dispensed with, and end-to-end acknowledgments are used instead. Sample simulation results illustrate the merits of DST-SDF under two proposed working modes related to the applied rule of evidence combination.

Signal classification is an important subject for military radio communications. With the revolution of digitizing communications ever closer to the antenna, commercial cognitive radios with programmable modulation schemes and adaptive transmission rates have become a practical wireless communication platform. Signal classification techniques have attracted much attention recently by the cognitive network applications in developing the next generation radio receivers and sensor networks with built-in automatic signal detection and classification capabilities. However, the technical expectations and goals in commercial applications are quite different with that in military communication systems. A key research area is to develop new algorithms with the low-cost real-time adaptive demodulation capability. An overview of automatic signal classification techniques and the challenges in migrating current signal classification methods into the cognitive radios and sensor network will be discussed.

Home networking environment is acquiring more and more relevance from the business and technical perspectives. Currently users are left alone in coping with the networking and integration intricacies of putting in place a really working home network solution. Moreover things are getting even more complicated due to the introduction in the homes of new technologies like sensor networks and to competing ecosystems that falter to cooperate (computer vendors, telcos, consumer electronics). There is an urgent need to relief users from the burden of managing the home networking environment. In this context the autonomic architectures represent the enabling solution because an autonomic network is capable of sensing and adapting to environment changes whilst performing self-* capabilities (e.g,. configuration, healing, optimization, protection). This paper presents technical challenges, opportunities and some architectural and application scenarios for the introduction of autonomic capabilities in the home networking environment.

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is an emerging communication paradigm to enable resilient, cost-efficient and reliable services for the future-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we study the problem of multipoint-to-multipoint (M2M) multicasting in a WMN which aims to use the minimum number of time slots to exchange messages among a group of k mesh nodes in a multi-hop WMN with n mesh nodes. We study the M2M multicasting problem in a distributed environment where each participant only knows that there are k participants and it does not know who are other k - 1 participants among n mesh nodes. It is known that the computation of an optimal M2M multicasting schedule is NP-hard. We present a fully distributed deterministic algorithm for such an M2M multicasting problem and analyze its time complexity. We show that if the maximum hop distance between any two out of the k participants is d, then the studied M2M multicasting problem can be solved in time O(d log(2) n + k log(3) n/log k) with a polynomial-time computation, which is an almost optimal scheme due to the lower bound Omega(d + k log n/log k) given in [5]. Our algorithm also improves the currently test known result with running time O(d log(2) n + k log(4) n) in [13]. In this paper, we also propose a distributed deterministic algorithm which accomplishes the M2M multicasting in time O(d + k) with a polynomial-time computation in unit disk graphs. This is an asymptotically optimal algorithm in the sense that there exists a WMN topology, e.g., a line, a ring, a star or a complete graph, in which the M2M multicasting cannot be completed in less than Omega(d + k) units of time.

The low power wireless communication technology has enabled the development of next generation low cost wireless sensor network. One important performance index of routing mechanism in sensor networks is sensor life span. How we utilize limited energy in wireless sensor network, directly affects the lifetime and cost of the network. As sensors are energy constrained by batteries and located for away from the access point. A sensor dies if its battery dies. Since the radio transmission consumes a lot of energy, we propose network routing protocols to save energy to prolong the sensor lifespan.
