Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as an important application area resulting from the advancement of efficient short-range radio communication and miniaturization of computing devices. Nodes in such a network generally remain in an unattended environment and thereby they are prone to attack by adversaries. Therefore, the need of defending such attacks is of utmost importance. This paper presents a data forwarding scheme to defend jamming attack in WSN. The attack is defended at the cost of an affordable delay. The scheme considers a multi-level tier architecture based on clustering of nodes in each tier. Further the work identifies the parameters causing delay in presence of attack and analyses the impact of the parameter values in estimating delay. We claim that delay is affordable as it is independent of number of attacked-nodes rather it depends on number of tiers where attacked-node(s) belong. The claim is justified with proof.

Data generation in wireless sensor networks could be bursty as it is dictated by the presence or absence of events of interest that generate these data. While conventional sensor nodes possessed only one radio interface, next generation sensor nodes are expected to have two (possibly more) radio interfaces, each with different range, capacity, and power consumption. Equipping sensor nodes with dual radios has its own benefits and can be quite useful in handling bursty traffic while at the same time satisfying the application's delivery requirements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive interface switch agent that intelligently selects the interface to be used for data transmission at a sensor node based on the data burst length while taking into consideration power consumption, throughput, and endto- end delay. The proposed work generalizes earlier works in this area to enable both the source nodes and intermediate data forwarding nodes to initiate the activation of high power radios so that they can be utilized to a higher degree for convergecast communication. We have performed extensive simulations with sensor nodes containing both IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 compatible radios. Our simulation results indicate that: (i) the end-to-end delay and throughput achieved by the proposed interface switch agent are comparable to those achieved in a network of sensor nodes equipped only with IEEE 802.11 radios, (ii) the energy consumed in the network using our interface switch agent is a fraction of that consumed in a network of the IEEE 802.11 sensor nodes and is comparable to that of sensors using only IEEE 802.15.4 radios.

A prioritized medium access control (PMAC) protocol is proposed for wireless sensor networks, based on a binary count down approach. PMAC effectively eliminates data collision and optimizes channel allocation. Moreover, as many networks nowadays compose traffic with several priorities, the simple yet effective design of PMAC offers strict service differentiation for prioritized packets. In this paper, PMAC is evaluated by collision probability, reneging/dropping probability, network throughput and channel efficiency. Our simulations show that the protocol effectively supports traffic differentiation and achieves very low packet dropping (both reneging and blocking) probabilities under the channel capacity. When the network is overloaded, it still maintains extremely stable and high channel throughput. It is demonstrated that PMAC performs superior in multihop networks, further proving the advantages of the proposed protocol. Featured with efficiency, simplicity, scalability, fairness, mobility and QoS provisioning, PMAC may be well served for the next-generation wireless networks.

Here is an idea using sensor networks for a next generation car. ICT has revolutionized the common man's life. Today we want everything at the tip of our finger which we never had dreamt of. This is an idea of the same. Once a luxury but today a need car has became one of the important assets in our life. The car which gives luxury and helps us out during needy hours many a times risks to unwanted turns. The idea reflects here the avoidance of such risks with the help of next generation networks or specifically sensor networks. The car is controlled by the network depending on parameters like license of the driver, battery, fuel, servicing status, speed of the car. News of traffic jam, congestion on the roads, alerts to avoid accidents, road guide of every instant and medicinal help during undesired events will be provided. Important of all, health of the driver will be monitored and if detected not suitable for driving will be not allowed to drive further. Health of the driver includes his blood pressure, drug level, alcoholic level, brain mapping, heart waves which will lead to caring of the driver, the persons traveling as well as will avoid accidents.

In this paper, we present a commercial sensor node platform called ScoutNode. It is based on a novel modular architecture that supports three very powerful functionalities - multimodal support with a maximum of twenty five sensors supported on a single node that includes multiple video cameras; a user- friendly API for application development, and interoperability with a variety of 802.x hardware and protocols. ScoutNode architecture has been developed to support the operational concept and requirements of unattended ground sensor (UGS) nodes for net-centric information collection for the military. It offers a very comprehensive sensing, processing, and communication platform for building a variety of military and commercial applications. The ScoutNode platform described in this paper is fully functional and a node based on this platform designed specially for the military was tested successfully by the US Army.

Energy conservation, coverage and connectivity are three critical application requirements in wireless sensor networks. Related researches have either concerned coverage, connectivity, and energy conservation separately or required sensing/communication range restrictions. In this paper, we aim to maximize the network lifetime, while maintaining coverage and connectivity simultaneously, without any sensing or communication range restriction. We propose MDS-MCC problem and we prove it is NP-complete. We also present a heuristic algorithm to solve MDS-MCC. Furthermore, we study MDS-MCC problem under some special conditions and obtain some important theoretical results.

Reliable data transfer is critical for several wireless sensing and networking applications. Reliability and the length of a transmitted wireless frame are inversely related to each other. In this paper, we analytically model reliability in terms of the number of transmissions required to correctly transmit a frame and the length of the frame. Given a reliability budget, the proposed model provides the maximum frame length to meet the budget. We develop this model for a binary symmetric channel (BSC) and extend the same model to a K-th order Markov channel. We empirically validate these models by using a comprehensive set of residual bit-error traces collected over operational 802.15.4 networks. We show that theoretical findings are consistent with empirical results and the proposed models provide realistic reliability guarantees in terms of allocated transmission budget and expected retransmission length. We also show that the throughput of the proposed models is better than that of existing packet length optimization approaches.

The most difficult challenge for the design of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is to maintain long network lifetimes since the sensor nodes are severely energy-constrained. Traditional WSN assumes employment of conventional RF transmitters which consume most of the stored power on the sensor node. In this regard, modulated backscattering (MB) emerges as a promising communication technique alternative, in which the sensor nodes reflect the incident signal of an RF source and modulate their data on the reflected signal. With the use of MB, the power consumption of the nodes reduce drastically since it replaces the most power consuming component of a typical sensor node, i.e., the RF transmitter. In addition, the nodes acquire relatively long-range communication ability through MB. Furthermore, the incident RF power can be converted into DC power in order to drive the sensing and processing circuitries. This, in turn,i leads to the design of battery-free wireless passive sensor networks (WPSN), which stands as a radically distinct solution approach for the energy problems of WSN. The objective of this paper is to revisit the main design challenge of WSN from entirely different perspective. To this end, the fundamental principles of WPSN are first introduced. In addition, in order to realize the potential benefits of WPSN, a new clustering-based energy-efficient communication protocol, i.e., PADRE (PAssive Data REtrieval), is presented for WPSN operating via MB technique. Simulations show that PADRE protocol achieves high performance in terms communication reliability and network lifetime.

In inter-working multi-hop wireless networks, establishing resilient connectivity between source-destination node pairs is a major issue. The issues of connectivity in multihop wireless networks have been studied. However these analyses focused on network connectivity in ad-hoc networks. Since the next generation of wireless networks will be inter-working, an understanding of connectivity as it applies to such networks is needed. An inter-working scenario will be when a multi-hop WiFi network is inter-worked with a multi-hop WiMAX network. Specifically, this research emphasizes that the connectivity of node pairs in inter-working multi-hop wireless networks can be evaluated based on the availability and reliability of radio links that form the communication path linking the nodes. This paper presents the initial part of the research, which is an analytical study of the link and route availability in inter-working multi-hop wireless networks.

Topology plays a vital role to increase the lifetime and scalability of wireless sensor network (WSN). Topology of the WSN can be controlled by the dynamic clustering technique. In this paper, we have proposed a dynamic clustering approach that determines the optimum number of hierarchical level based on the traffic pattern to improve the network lifetime. During the period of data transmission, the nodes which are nearer to the base station, have to do dual work of collecting the data from its own cluster and forward the data coming from the previous cluster head. Due to this, load on the proximity cluster head is more in compare with the farther cluster head. Hence proximity cluster head dies out early than the farther cluster head which will result in the failure of whole network. Our proposed approach will determine the optimum number of hierarchical level based on the traffic pattern at any instant to improve network lifetime. Optimum number of hierarchical level is important for balancing inter cluster and intra cluster traffic. We have compared the total lifetime of the network for varying traffic condition and found the best topology for different traffic condition that will result in maximum lifetime of the system.
