The presence of Network Address Translation (NAT) is a hindrance when accessing services within home networks, because NAT breaks the end-to-end connectivity model of the Internet protocol suite. communication across NATs is only possible if it is initiated from a host belonging to the internal network. Thus, services expecting a connection established from the outside fail in most situations. Existing approaches for NAT-Traversal do not cover the full range of NAT-Traversal methods and fail in certain situations, or deliver sub optimal results in others. Part of the problem of existing approaches is that they do not differentiate between different types of applications. We argue that the classification of applications into four service categories helps to determine the best matching NAT-Traversal technique. An extensive field test enables us to acquire knowledge about the success rates of promising NAT-Traversal techniques. These results will help us to develop a knowledge driven NAT-Traversal framework making its choice based on an understanding of NAT behavior. There are some existing works that study the coexistence of 802.16 and 802.11 networks. However, not many of them consider the resource allocation issues in the case of delivering traffic between mobile stations and Internet users through an access point (AP) and a base station (BS) which operate at the same frequency band. In this paper, we design a cooperation mechanism for 802.16 and 802.11 to share the same medium with adaptable resource allocation. The adaptiveness in resource allocation in our design eliminates the potential inefficiency from the cooperation due to bandwidth bottleneck. Targeting VoIP applications, we propose a simple approach for the adaptation that optimizes the resource allocation not only between the IEEE 802.11 AP and the stations but also between the IEEE 802.16 BS and the IEEE 802.11 AP. Numerical results show significant improvement in voice capacity.

In the next-generationnetworks, guaranteeing QoS is one of the important factors, which allows QoS supportable networks such as UMTS and 802.16e to lie deployed together. Under such networks, a mobile node (MN) with multiple interfaces demands for the QoS service continuity during a handover. The 802.21 framework enables MNs to freely move in multiple networks. However, supporting QoS service continuity remains as a problem to he solved. In this paper, we propose a network-initiated handover based on the 802.21 framework to provide the QoS service continuity in UMTS/802.16e networks. To support the QoS service continuity, we design a detailed handover procedure that consists of three steps;QoS Measurement, Passive Reservation, and Activation. Through our performance evaluation, we show that the proposed handover scheme provides the QoS service continuity of MNs during a handover in terms of guaranteed data rates and latency.

The nextgeneration of wireless sensornetworks will integrate communication systems beyond the third generation paradigm. As a result of this integration, the new communication systems will be fed by the sensornetworks with information gathered from the environment, achieving context awareness. To reach the necessary end-to-end connectivity between all-IP networks and sensornetworks, the IETF 6LoWPAN working group has designed an IPv6 adaptation layer for low power devices. This protocol stack provides IPv6 interoperability to the sensornetworks, thus avoiding as much overhead as possible. This paper analyses and evaluates the associated IP communication overhead in each possible 6LoWPAN scenario, from intra to inter network communication. We conclude that, even the 6LoWPAN offering a light weight IP solution for link local sensor network communication, it has a relatively high overhead when data flows between different networks. In order to avoid the communication overhead when global IPv6 addressing is necessary we propose a new solution based on a 6LoWPAN global-to-link-layer address translation.
