The promises of next-generation Internet architectures are many and varied. Key among these are increased flexibility and diversity. What this translates into is increased variety not only in protocols and technology, but in the performance characteristics and services provided by these composite or heterogeneous networks. This is certainly true of the diversity of emerging networking technologies being deployed in the current and nextgeneration Internet environments. A significant concern is the need for a generic security protocol that is not tied to particular types of layer 1 and 2 networks. Based on lessons learned from the current Internet architecture we can see that this protocol needs to be able to communicate beyond trust boundaries (i.e. the borders of Autonomous Systems). We propose a high-level architecture for such a Generic Security Protocol and use simulation to demonstrate the benefits of having inter-domain communication in the context of the next-generation public Internet.

In this paper, we study the localization problem in large-scale underwater sensornetworks. The adverse aqueous environments, the node mobility, and the large network scale all pose new challenges, and most current localization schemes are not applicable. We propose a hierarchical approach which divides the whole localization process into two sub-processes: anchor node localization and ordinary node localization. Many existing techniques can be used in the former. For the ordinary node localization process, we propose a distributed localization scheme which novelly integrates a 3-dimensional Euclidean distance estimation method with a recursive location estimation method. Simulation results show that our proposed solution can achieve high localization coverage with relatively small localization error and low communication overhead in large-scale 3-dimensional underwater sensornetworks.

One of the fundamental issues in wireless sensornetworks (WSNs) is the topology control (TC) problem, which reflects how well the energy consumption is reduced and the network capacity is enhanced. In this paper, by using computational geometry theoretic, we present a fully distributed routing protocol, Cooperative Energy-efficient Topology Control (Co-ETC), whose goal is to achieve energy efficiency in mobile wireless sensornetworks. Based on underlying routing graph, the proposed scheme allows each node (with or without mobility) to locally select communication neighbors and dynamically adjust its transmission radius accordingly, such that all nodes together self-form a energy-efficient topology. The simulation results indicated that the proposed scheme was feasible. Compared with existing state-of-the-art algorithms and protocols, Co-ETC has better energy-efficiency. Moreover, it can adapt to mobile environment well.

Traffic patterns for mobile communicationnetworks are well known and accurately modelled. However, traffic generation behaviors for sensornetworks are often lacking in research and not well understood. We investigate one class of sensornetworks for a target tracking application using realistic sensing models and a general target motion model. Results show that the probability of arrivals for a tracking sensor network fits a quadratic curve.

Most routing algorithms for sensornetworks focus on finding energy efficient paths to prolong the lifetime of sensornetworks. As a result, the power of sensors on efficient paths depletes quickly, and consequently sensornetworks become incapable of monitoring events from some parts of their target areas. In many sensor network applications, the events that must be tracked occur at random locations and have non-deterministic generation patterns. Therefore, ideally, routing algorithms should consider not only energy efficiency, but also the amount of energy remaining in each sensor, thus avoiding non-functioning sensors due to early power depletion. This paper introduces a new metric, Energy Cost, devised to consider a balance of sensors' remaining energies, as well as energy efficiency. This metric gives rise to the design of the Distributed Energy Adaptive Routing (DEAR) algorithm devised to balance the data traffic of sensornetworks in a decentralized manner and consequently prolong the lifetime of the networks. DEAR is scalable in the number of sensors and also robust to the variations in the dynamics of event generation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by comparing three existing routing algorithms: Direct communication Approach, minimum Transmission Energy, and Self-Organized Routing and find that energy balance should be considered to extend lifetime of sensor network and increase robustness of sensor network for diverse event generation patterns.

In this paper, we develop a new beacon-less localization scheme for non-flat surfaces for wireless sensornetworks. Simulations are conducted for a Gaussian distribution of nodes about the deployment points on the non-flat terrain, as well as a node deployment corresponding to the terrain surface characteristics. The localization errors for the proposed method, for a non-flat terrain with the Gaussian distribution of nodes and the terrain conforming distribution, are comparable to those in the case of the location discovery scheme in [1] for the flat surface. The localization errors, when the distribution of nodes corresponds to the terrain are slightly larger than when the nodes are normally distributed. The results are applicable to localization in real life wireless sensornetworks deployed over non-flat terrain.

Wireless sensornetworks represent a new generation of real-time embedded systems with significantly different communication constraints from the traditional networked systems. With their development, a new attack called a path-based Dos (PDoS) attack has appeared. In a PDoS attack, an adversary, either inside or outside the network, overwhelms sensor nodes by flooding a multi-hop end-to-end communication path with either replayed packets or injected spurious packets. In this article, we propose a solution using mobile agents which can detect PDoS attacks easily.

sensornetworks are becoming an important part of the IT landscape. Existing systems, however, are limited in two fundamental ways: lack of data independence, and poor integration with the higher layers of the data processing chain. In this paper we present SwissQM, a nextgeneration architecture for sensornetworks built to address these two limitations. SwissQM combines a virtual machine at the sensors with a powerful gateway as access point to the system. The flexibility of SwissQM opens up the doors to sensornetworks with richer functionality, data model independence, optimised performance, and smooth integration into the rest of the architecture. SwissQM supports adaptability (e.g., push down strategies), multiple users and applications, high query turn-around, extensibility (e.g., user defined functionality), and optimised use of resources. The paper describes SwissQM, the features it provides, and examples of its use.

This paper proposes and analyzes a scalable and efficient cluster based group key management protocol by introducing identity based infrastructure for secure communication in mobile wireless sensornetworks. To ensure scalability and dynamic reconfigurability, the system takes a cluster based approach by which group members are broken into clusters and leaders of clusters securely communicate with each other to agree on a group key in response to membership change and member mobility events. Through analysis we have shown that our protocol has high probability to be resilient for secure communication among mobile nodes. Finally, it is clarified that the proposed scheme is efficient for secure positioning in wireless sensor network.
