The 2023 IEEE/RSJ International conference on Intelligent robots and systems (IROS 2023) was held on 1–5 October at Huntington Place in Detroit, MI, USA ( Figure 1 ). With the COVID-19 pandemic shifting IROS 2020 entirely to the on-demand format, this was the first in-person IROS in North America in six years. The long-term impact of the pandemic also meant that it was the first in-person conference of any kind for many of the student attendees. IROS 2023’s theme, “The next generation of Robotics,” reinforced the importance of these students within the IROS community, so we made the conscious effort to prioritize the in-person experience for those among the more than 3,600 attendees from 53 countries and regions who were able to join us in person in Detroit.

In this paper, we present the first implementation of a social robot acting as a companion for individuals eating alone. Our system can engage in multimodal interactions with the user during meals. It conducts conversations on various topics, complemented by gestures and other nonverbal behaviors. The system comprises a NAO robot, human activity recognition modules, a speech recognition module, and a dialog management system integrated with an LLM model. In the paper, we present a technical description of the system and the interaction flow, as well as discuss the possible applications and planned validation. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In the context of smart agriculture, new and advanced machines are emerging to be implemented in the agricultural field, such as mobile field robots. These systems are usually lightweight machines compared to conventional tractors and can be categorized according to their structural components, functionalities, and applications. In addition, both commercial systems and academic prototypes have been developed and advanced in recent years. The reasons that influence the low adoption of commercial mobile robots have been investigated, as well as the challenges that need to be addressed. In addition, the factors influencing the adoption of agricultural robots have been investigated. However, less attention has been paid to the specific capabilities that a mobile field robot should have from the farmer's point of view, and for which agricultural activities it should be used profitably. Therefore, the objective of this study is to define the needs and requirements of farmers for mobile agricultural field robots. A survey method was used to obtain responses from farmers from different areas and specializations. The questionnaire, composed of three sections, was deployed both online and as paper printed version to Italian farmers. The first section collected general information about the farmer, farm type, and equipment currently used. The second one focused on the farmers’ knowledge of the mobile field robot, providing also an exemplificative video at the ending. The third one collected the needs and feedback of the farmers for robots. A total of 51 farmers responded to the survey indicating a good knowledge of mobile field robot. Considering farmers’ needs, variable rate technology and tillage operations were identified as the best practices that can be effectively implemented by field robots. In the rapidly evolving field of robotics, integration of commonsense knowledge (CSK) in AI systems is becoming highly crucial to enhance the decision-making capabilities of robots, especially in next-generation multipurpose environments. This paper presents Robo-CSK-Organizer, a pioneering system that employs CSK, via a classical knowledge base, to facilitate sophisticated task-based object organization helpful in multipurpose robots. Unlike systems relying solely on deep learning tools such as ChatGPT, our Robo-CSK-Organizer system stands out in various crucial aspects. This includes (1) its ability to resolve ambiguities and maintain consistency in object placement;(2) its adaptability to diverse task-based classifications;and moreover, (3) its contributions to explainable AI (XAI), consequently helping to foster trust and human–robot collaboration. This system’s efficacy is underlined by DETIC (DEtector with Image Classes), an advanced extension of Detectron2 for object identification;BLIP (Bootstrapping Language-Image Pre-training) for context discernment;and most vitally by the adaptation of ConceptNet, a well-grounded commonsense knowledge base for reasoning based on semantic as well as pragmatic knowledge. While we deploy ConceptNet to extract CSK, the process in Robo-CSK-Organizer is generic enough to be replicated with other state-of-the-art knowledge bases. Controlled experiments and real-world applications, synopsized in this paper, make Robo-CSK-Organizer demonstrate superior performance in placing objects in contextually relevant locations, highlighting its clear capacity for commonsense-guided decision-making closer to the thresholds of human cognition. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed robotics by enabling systems to autonomously execute complex tasks with minimal human involvement. Traditional methods, however, often depend on costly hardware, continuous monitoring, and intricate software integration, which constrain scalability and widespread implementation. This research presents an innovative approach that combines vision-based large language models (LLMs) with zero-shot prompting to autonomously program robotic systems, including a humanoid robot equipped with dual manipulators. The proposed system harnesses contextual image data to efficiently generate task-specific code, eliminating the need for iterative corrections. Training is conducted through OpenAI's Assistant feature, utilizing documents predominantly comprising images, while continuous operation is facilitated by a self-looping mechanism. Experimental results highlight the system's capability to perform manipulator tasks with notable accuracy, paving the way for scalable, adaptive, and dynamic automation. This study addresses both practical and theoretical challenges in automation, providing a cost-effective framework for next-generation robotic systems. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper presents work from a project carried out following the Innovation Pact for the Digital Transition of the Textile and Clothing Sector, having as reference a project in a textile entity that is part of the Pact. Its focus is on implementing intralogistics solutions within the company. Currently, intralogistics is seen as the area of Logistics 4.0 that will most benefit from the implementation of new digital technologies, naturally leading to significant management challenges, such as the change of traditionally manual jobs with big human influence to more collaborative jobs. Since intralogistics manages the flows of materials and information, its automation becomes preponderant in increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of companies, which is one of the motivating factors for increasing productivity and efficiency, through the elimination of activities that do not add value, such as transportation, separation, and preparation of materials. Difficulties in finding manufacturing orders already prepared, due to being several orders allocated to the same compartment;the efforts applied in transporting documentation;supplying materials, or surplus segregation for subsequent recycling;are some of the factors that generate low productivity. This project aimed to reduce these difficulties by implementing solutions such as Autonomous Mobile robots, a Vertical Lift Module and an Automated System for separating surplus textiles. © 2025 The Author(s).

This paper presents a novel Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) architecture for trajectory tracking of omnidirectional robots. The key innovation lies in the method of handling constraints on maximum velocity and acceleration outside of the optimization process, significantly reducing computation time. The controller uses a simplified process model to predict the robot’s state evolution, enabling real-time cost function minimization through gradient descent methods. The cost function penalizes position and orientation errors as well as control effort variation. Experimental results compare the performance of the proposed controller with a generic Proportional-Derivative (PD) controller and a NMPC with integrated optimization constraints. The findings reveal that the proposed controller achieves higher precision than the PD controller and similar precision to the NMPC with integrated constraints, but with substantially lower computational effort. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
