Proposed and implemented is a regression framework, which extends the programming language Java with regression analysis, i.e., the capability to do parameter estimation for a function. The regression framework is unique in that functional forms for regression analysis are expressed as Java programs, in which some parameters are not a priori known, but need to be learned from training sets provided as input. Typical applications of this regression framework include calibration of parameters of computational processes, described as OO programs. To implement regression learning, the compiler of this framework (1) analyses the structure of the parameterized Java program that represents a functional form, (2) automatically generates a constraint optimization problem, in which constraint variables are the unknown parameters, and the objective function to be minimized is the sum of squares of errors with regarding to the training set, and (3) solves the optimization problem using an external nonlinear optimization solver. Then the framework executes as a regular Java program, in which the initially unknown parameters are replaced with the found optimal values. The syntax and semantics of the regression framework are formally defined and exemplified in the geographically weighted regression model.

Audio Word2Vec offers vector representations of fixed dimensionality for variable-length audio segments using Sequence to-sequence Autoencoder (SA). These vector representations are shown to describe the sequential phonetic structures of the audio segments to a good degree, with real world applications such as spoken term detection (STD). This paper examines the capability of language transfer of Audio Word2Vec. We train SA from one language (source language) and use it to extract the vector representation of the audio segments of another language (target language). We found that SA can still catch the phonetic structure from the audio segments of the target language if the source and target languages are similar. In STD, we obtain the vector representations from the SA learned from a large amount of source language data, and found them surpass the representations from naive encoder and SA directly learned from a small amount of target language data. The result shows that it is possible to learn Audio Word2Vec model from high-resource languages and use it on low-resource languages. This further expands the usability of Audio Word2Vec.

E-governance has become an important element of good governance in Namibia and elsewhere in the world. Countries including Namibia has embraced this phenomenal tool by employing e-government systems that provide, amongst other benefits, the governance, and the interoperability of external systems from various entities with a common goal. The communication in the e-governance platform and many data exchange systems alike, such as health information exchange systems, usually depends on the interoperability of the platforms achieved with platform-independent architectures and protocol such as Representational State Transfer (REST), Simple object Access Protocol (SOAP) or Application programming Interface (APIs), which is an important building block for developing distributed applications, published as web services over an Intranet or the Internet. However, in most interoperability or integrations of systems, the interfacing component of the integration has been regarded as the most likely to be the weak link in terms of vulnerabilities [4]. Protocols such as SOAP commonly used for web-service integration, are prone to several vulnerabilities such as SOAP Injection and WSDL disclosure/enumeration that could make SOAP powered web-service integration vulnerable if not mitigated. This paper adopts the Design Science paradigm to design a secure integration model to mitigate vulnerabilities presented by the SOAP-powered and any other web-service integration protocols, to achieve secure integrations of heterogeneous systems in e-governance platforms.

Reflection is a powerful tool for the adaptation of applications at runtime. The modification of Web services is a task that entails the modification and compilation of the source code, as well as the deployment of the new version of the Web service in the application server. In this paper, we introduce RAWS (Reflective and Adaptable Web Service), a Web service design model based on a reflective architecture of two levels. RAWS allows both the dynamic modification of the definition and implementation structure of the Web service, and the dynamic modification of the Web service behavior in order to change the existing code or to add new functionalities. All these dynamic modifications are performed directly on the code during execution, with no need to have the Web service source code. RAWS improves Web services adaptability and maintainability, as well as the ability for authorized clients to remotely modify them.

Prior research attempts to formalize the structure of object-oriented design patterns for a more precise specification of design patterns. It also allows automation support to be developed for user-defined design patterns in the future CASE tools. Targeting to a particular type of automation (e.g. verification of pattern instances), previous specification approaches over-specify pattern structures to a certain extend. Over-specification makes pattern specification ambiguous and disallows the specification language to be used for specifying compound patterns. In this paper, we present the structural properties of design patterns which reveal the true abstract nature of pattern structures. To support these properties so as to solve the over-specification problem, we propose an extension to UML 1.5 (basically UML 1.4 with Action semantics). The specialization and refining mechanism of UML provides also a smooth support for the instantiation, refinement and integration of pattern structures specified in UML. Our work makes no significant extension to the UML 1.5 meta-model but more in a UML Profile approach to ease the migration of our work to UML 2.0, which has not yet officially released by OMG during this work.

The paper introduces a system-on-chip (SOC) modeling methodology that enables the use of a single model for multiple purposes throughout a project's life cycle, starting from the architectural definition phase, continuing with the microarchitectural optimization and ending with the software development and optimization phase. These different purposes are served by enabling multiple approaches for modeling applications, providing capabilities for configuring and refining the hardware model and reaching a high accuracy level while maintaining a good simulation speed.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) are an instance of Ad-hoc networks, which are general-purpose distributed wireless networks interconnected without the need of any centralized infrastructure. VANETs are expected to be massively deployed in upcoming vehicles, because their use can improve the safety of driving and makes new forms of inter-vehicle communications possible as well. The simulation of VANETs requires two different components: a vehicular traffic simulator, capable to provide an accurate mobility model for the nodes of a VANET, and a network simulator, for simulating the behavior of a wireless network. In this paper, we provide a survey of mobility models proposed for VANETs. We analyze challenges and future perspectives of VANET simulators and current routing solutions for VANET.

Code-patterns are statically recurring structures specific to a programming language. It can be parallel to aid in designing software systems for solving particular problems. Contrary to compilation assistance of code-patterns, control-patterns are dynamically recurring structures invoked during program execution time. It can be used for benchmarking OO-programs and underlying architecture like Java and Java-VM. We propose a run-time profiler based on control patterns and show that all run-time trace can be represented by a directed graph, a constrained output and a Boolean function. A transformed graph can be fed into a data-mining analyzer to find out the recurring structure representing run-time behaviors.

This paper describes the reform of a sophomore-level course in computer organization for the Computer Science BS curriculum at the University of Texas at El Paso, an urban minority-serving institution, where Java and integrated IDEs have been adopted as the only language and development environments used in the first three semesters of study. This effort was motivated by faculty observations and industry feedback indicating that upper-division students and graduates were failing to achieve mastery of non-garbage-collected, strictly imperative languages, such as C. The similarity of C variable semantics to the underlying machine model enables simultaneous mastery of both C and assembly-language programming and exposes implementation details that are difficult to teach independently, such as subroutine linkage and management of stack frame. An online lab manual has been developed for this course that is freely available for extension or use by other institutions. In this paper, we report on pedagogical techniques for facilitating student understanding of the relationships between high-level language constructs, such as algebraic expression syntax, block-structured control-flow structures, and composite data types, and their implementations in machine code.

3D virtual worlds are potent digital ecosystems because the 3D interface simulates real-world environments and the community of users creates a dynamic, real-to-life economy and in-world culture. Some virtual worlds such as Second Life empower users to generate in-world content through object building tools and programming languages; indeed the content in Second Life is entirely user-generated. This promotes a rich culture of innovation surrounding this emerging technology that continually develops the capabilities of the 3D digital ecosystem. The collaborative culture spans both the 3D in-world environment and 2D ecosystems: for example, Web 2.0 applications such as wikis and blogs facilitate support, discussion, and documentation for user-generated innovations. Innovation in 3D digital ecosystems such as Second Life are applied to all domains of human endeavour that exist in the real-world, including recreation, socialisation, commerce, and education. This paper shares the authorspsila professional experience using Second Life in tertiary information systems/science education. Case studies describe the specific applications. They are followed by discussion of the benefits of 3D digital ecosystems for education and suggestions for future research, development, and practice.
