TELCO operators are moving towards adopting the role of platform providers that enable developers or third parties to create new services for their platform. This is similar to the Web 2.0 application development paradigm where developers use existing frameworks and software development kits to create portable services through mashups (composition) and syndication. To attract a community that would develop these converged services for their platform, there is a pressing need to create a converged (web + IMS) application framework that reduces the development effort, cuts time to market and realizes the dream of a portable service, developed from the composition of elementary services. The existing and cumbersome route so far open to Telcos include working with a Service Capability Interaction Manager (SCIM) and a SIP Application Server (AS). This paper analyzes the motivation, challenges, requirements, benefits and design of a converged application framework for creating mashups using Web 2.0 and IMS. It also discusses how these objectives are met by SailFin CAFE¿ services, exposed to clients through open web interfaces like REST.

We propose the use of Z as the formal notation to express Jackson System Development (JSD) specifications where JSD is to serve as the mechanism to help the analysis of problem domains. A function process in JSD specifications is manifested by an operation schema. A model process is treated as an active entity that requires an operation on its data store to add a new instance to the collection of existing instances. The model process is thus translated into a state schema, and its related operations are converted into the operation schemas with instances set that can be modified by the operations. A structure diagram is transformed into a state transition diagram and then converted into its Z specifications. Cardinality relationships between processes are translated into Z notations based upon the notion of rough merges. These are illustrated using the problem domain of a car rental system.

Use Cases describe behavioral requirements of software systems in textual form. They are interpreted for creation of analysis, design and implementation artifacts, including user interface (UI). There is a very likelihood of inconsistencies in the interpretation of the Use Cases by different members of software development team. Various research efforts have been made to associate a formal model with the Use Cases to minimize such inconsistencies. In this paper we present a Use Case editor which uses restricted form of natural language and generates a finite state machine (FSM) model of the Use Case including UI requirements. The editor views a Use Case as an ordered set of event-response pair with parameters. These parameters provide input and output requirements of UI. The semantics of a Use Case and its events are captured in terms of pre and post conditions, which are used to generate states and transition rules of FSM. Both state and transition rules of FSM are represented as typed graph. UI implementation is also modeled as typed graph. We have defined consistency criteria between UI requirement and its implementation, and have used a graph based simulator tool, GROOVE for verification of consistency. The editor generates XML files compatible with GROOVE to facilitate this consistency checking.

Performance and scalability of EJB applications

We investigate the combined effect of application implementation method, container design, and efficiency of communication layers on the performance scalability of J2EE application servers by detailed measurement and profiling of an auction site server. We have implemented five versions of the auction site. The first version uses stateless session beans, making only minimal use of the services provided by the Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) container. Two versions use entity beans, one with container-managed persistence and the other with bean-managed persistence. The fourth version applies the session faqade pattern, using session beans as a faqade to access entity beans. The last version uses EJB 2.0 local interfaces with the session faqade pattern. We evaluate these different implementations on two popular open-source EJB containers with orthogonal designs. JBoss uses dynamic proxies to generate the container classes at run time, making an extensive use of reflection. JOnAS precompiles classes during deployment, minimizing the use of reflection at run time. We also evaluate the communication optimizations provided by each of these EJB containers. The most important factor in determining performance is the application implementation method. EJB applications with session beans perform as well as a Java servlets-only implementation and an order-of-magnitude better than most of the implementations based on entity beans. The fine-granularity access exposed by the entity beans limits scalability. Use of session faqade beans improves performance for entity beans, but only if local communication is very efficient or EJB 2.0 local interfaces are used. Otherwise, session faqade beans degrade performance. For the implementation using session beans, communication cost forms the major component of the execution time on the EJB server. In this paper, we propose Infinileap, a modern networking framework enabling high-performance memory transfer mechanisms like Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) for applications written in Java. Infinileap is based on the Open Communication X (UCX) framework, which is accessed from Java. This is accomplished through Oracle's Project Panama, which is currently in the preview phase and aims to significantly improve interoperability between Java and “foreign” languages, such as C. In contrast to often used internal and unsupported JDK APIs, Project Panama's APIs are explicitly intended for use and developers are encouraged to adapt their existing code accordingly. Using Project Panama, we implement an object as well as future-oriented framework based on UCX. Our experiments show that Infinileap and thus Project Panama's innovations work reliably and efficiently under heavy load and also, within benchmarks implemented for this purpose based on the Java Microbenchmark Harness (JMH), achieve very good performance results with over 110 million messages per second and round-trip latencies below two microseconds with a single ConnectX-5 InfiniBand (single-port) network interface controller.

The authors discuss a list of requirements which should be met by the user interface development system (UIDS) to address the special demands of software environments. Chiron-1 uses an annotation-based, concurrent model which makes a clear separation between an application's functional and user interface parts, while still promoting effective communication between those parts. The UIDS model and language interface and the UIDS architecture are described. The authors describe how applications are built with Chiron-1, and illustrate the process with an example. Important Chiron-1 concepts are presented, and their significance in the software environment context is explained. The authors detail some design issues and report on the status of current work and the plans for future research.< >

With the advent of chip-multiprocessors, we are faced with the challenge of parallelizing performance-critical software. Transactional memory (TM) has emerged as a promising programming model allowing programmers to focus on parallelism rather than maintaining correctness and avoiding deadlock. Many implementations of hardware, software, and hybrid support for TM have been proposed; of these, software-only implementations (STMs) are especially compelling since they can be used with current commodity hardware. However, in addition to higher overheads, many existing STM systems are limited to either managed languages or intrusive APIs. Furthermore, transactions in STMs cannot normally contain calls to unobservable code such as shared libraries or system calls. In this paper we present JudoSTM, a novel dynamic binary-rewriting approach to implementing STM that supports C and C++ code. Furthermore, by using value-based conflict detection, JudoSTM additionally supports the transactional execution of both (i) irreversible system calls and (ii) library functions that may contain locks. We significantly lower overhead through several novel optimizations that improve the quality of rewritten code and reduce the cost of conflict detection and buffering. We show that our approach performs comparably to Rochester's RSTM library-based implementation- demonstrating that a dynamic binary-rewriting approach to implementing STM is an interesting alternative.

This paper describes the implementation of an intelligent application layer gateway for the traditional training simulator to connect with other simulators using the high level architecture (HLA). The HLA is the latest open distributed interactive simulation standard developed by the defense modeling and simulation office of the US Department of Defense. To reap the full benefits of simulation interoperability and reusability in the near-term, it is important to quickly transit the legacy training simulators to compliant with the HLA. However, the programming philosophy between traditional training simulator and HLA-compliant simulator is different. To shorten the system rebuild time and avoid altering the original functions of the simulator, the proposed application layer gateway handles all the runtime infrastructure services within the HLA and communicates with the simulator by using the shared memory. To verify the feasibility of the proposed intelligent gateway and its performance, a real-time flight platform was developed. The platform includes a real-time flight model, a software control panel and an image generation system. The experimental results showed that our approach is workable and practical.

Blockchain is a shared, distributed ledger on which transactions are digitally recorded and linked together. Smart Contracts are programs running on Blockchain and are used to perform transactions in a distributed environment without need for any trusted third party. Since smart contracts are used to transfer assets between contractual parties, their safety and security are crucial and badly written and insecure contracts may result in catastrophe. Actor-based programming is known to solve several problems in building distributed software systems. Moreover, formal verification is a solid technique for developing dependable systems. In this paper, we show how the actor model can be used for modeling, analysis and synthesis of smart contracts. We propose Smart Rebeca as an extension of the actor-based language Rebeca, and use the model checking toolset Afra for verification of smart contracts. We implement a synthesizer to synthesize Solidity programs that run on the Ethereum platform from Smart Rebeca models. We examine the challenges and opportunities of our approach in modeling, formal verification, and synthesis of smart contracts using actors.

The INSIGHT simulation language describes systems in a quick, simple, and compact fashion using a network representation. This description can be entered and simulated using novel interactive facilities that free the user from learning specific syntax. Statistics summarizing the simulation are produced automatically, but can be greatly enhanced by various input models and output analysis mechanisms. Use of the language does not require programming and complex models use the descriptive features of simple ones, incorporating more elaborate specifications and more sophisticated concepts. INSIGHT is available for most computers and is portable across machines. The language has been extensively applied and its scope of applications has ranged from manufacturing to service environments. Using INSIGHT, the process of simulation modeling and the results from the simulations combine to provide "insight" into problem solving.
