applications that combine general program logic with persistent databases (e.g., three-tier applications) often suffer large performance penalties from poor use of the database. We introduce a program analysis technique that combines information flow in the program with commutativity analysis of its database operations to produce a unified dependency graph for database statements, which provides programmers with a high-level view of how costly database operations are and how they are connected in the program. As an example application of our analysis we describe three optimizations that can be discovered by examining the structure of the dependency graph;each helps remove communication latency from the critical path of a multi-tier system. We implement our technique in a tool for Java applications using JDBC and experimentally validate it using the multi-tier component of the Dacapo benchmark.

StreamPI: a stream-parallel programming extension for object-oriented programming languages

Because multicore CPUs have become the standard with all major hardware manufacturers, it becomes increasingly important for programming languages to provide programming abstractions that can be mapped effectively onto parallel architectures. Stream processing is a programming paradigm where computations are expressed as independent actors that communicate via FIFO data-channels. The coarse-grained parallelism exposed in stream programs facilitates such an efficient mapping of actors onto the underlying multicore hardware. We propose a stream-parallel programming abstraction that extends object-oriented languages with stream-programming facilities. StreamPI consists of a class hierarchy for actor-specification together with a language-independent runtime system that supports the execution of stream programs on multicore architectures. We show that the language-specific part of StreamPI, i.e., the class hierarchy, can be implemented as a library-level programming language extension. A library-level extension has the advantage that an existing programming language implementation need not be touched. Legacy-code can be mixed with a stream-parallel application, and the use of sequential legacy code with actors is supported. Unlike previous approaches, StreamPI allows dynamic creation and subsequent execution of stream programs. StreamPI actors are typed. Type-safety is achieved through type-checks at stream graph creation time. We have implemented StreamPI's language-independent runtime system and language interfaces for Ada 2005 and C++ for Intel multicore architectures. We have evaluated StreamPI for up to 16 cores on a two CPU 8-core Intel Xeon X7560 server, and we provide a performance comparison with StreamIt (Gordon et al. in International conference on Architectural Support for programming languages and Operating systems, 2006), which is the de facto standard for stream-parallel programming. Dynamic software updating (DSU) systems eliminate costly downtime by dynamically fixing bugs and adding features to executing programs. Given a static code patch, most DSU systems construct runtime code changes automatically. However, a dynamic update must also specify how to change the running program's execution state, e. g., the stack and heap, to make it compatible with the new code. Constructing such state transformations correctly and automatically remains an open problem. This paper presents a solution called Targeted object Synthesis (TOS). TOS first executes the same tests on the old and new program versions separately, observing the program heap state at a few corresponding points. Given two corresponding heap states, TOS matches objects in the two versions using key fields that uniquely identify objects and correlate old and new-version objects. Given example object pairs, TOS then synthesizes the simplest-possible function that transforms an old-version object to its new-version counterpart. We show that TOS is effective on updates to four open-source server programs for which it generates non-trivial transformation functions that use conditionals, operate on collections, and fix memory leaks. These transformations help programmers understand their changes and apply dynamic software updates.

This paper reports on the development of a language construct designed to solve certain problems in composability at the level of object-oriented programming languages. Features were chosen to investigate how much compositional functionality could be added to core Java with as small a change as possible and in an additive manner. A fairly elegant and effective syntax on core Java resulted in reducing the clutter of the "mechanics" of composition. This construct features eliminating runtime cast and null exceptions within the construct, and the option of parametric covariant override. It does so while avoiding undesirable restrictions or new frameworks. Recently, new techniques intended to improve the composability of software components in the Java ecosystem have been vigorously pursued. Proposals take on the objectives of composition in largescale systems and enterprise applications but often implement on conventional object-oriented languages which face the same kinds of problems from the ground up. Benefitting from those experiences, the present work seeks to provide core Java-level solutions to problems that are analogous to those at the higher-levels. The supervenience construct described in this paper is based on a well-established formulation for composing a relationship over classes with some common behavioral elements, their behavioral intersection. The narrow concern of this construct is the sound composition of components across class families while eliminating certain barriers to runtime type-safety in core Java. The supervenience construct has been applied to certain classic problems and key case studies in composability and extensibility which represent fundamental issues that emerge at every level. The implementation requires no installed runtime frameworks and no changes to the JVM or type system of core Java. In this paper we explore how we can use Specification and Description Language, to represent simulation models that make an intensive use of geographical information, like environmental simulation models. The purpose is to perform a complete unambiguous, graphical and formal representation of a wildfire simulation model. Specification and Description Language is a modern object oriented language that allows the definition of distributed systems. It has focused on the modeling of reactive, state/event driven systems, and has been standardized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in the Z. 100. Thanks to the graphical representation of the simulation model, the interaction between the experts that usually come from different areas is simplified. Also, due to the unambiguous and modular nature of the language, all the details of the model can be validated by personnel that do not necessarily are used with programming languages or simulation infrastructures.

Future microprocessors will have more serious memory wall problems since they will include more cores and threads in each chip. Similarly, future applications will have more serious memory bloat problems since they are more often written using object-oriented languages and reusable frameworks. To overcome such problems, the language runtime environments must accurately and efficiently profile how programs access objects. We propose Barrier Profiler, a low-overhead object access profiler using a memory-protection-based approach called pointer barrierization and adaptive overhead reduction techniques. Unlike previous memory-protection-based techniques, pointer barrierization offers per-object protection by converting all of the pointers to a given object to corresponding barrier pointers that point to protected pages. Barrier Profiler achieves low overhead by not causing signals at object accesses that are unrelated to the needed profiles, based on profile feedback and a compiler analysis. Our experimental results showed Barrier Profiler provided sufficiently accurate profiles with 1.3% on average and at most 3.4% performance overhead for allocation-intensive benchmarks, while previous code-instrumentation-based techniques suffered from 9.2% on average and at most 12.6% overhead. The low overhead allows Barrier Profiler to be run continuously on production systems. Using Barrier Profiler, we implemented two new online optimizations to compress write-only character arrays and to adjust the initial sizes of mostly non-accessed arrays. They resulted in speed-ups of up to 8.6% and 36%, respectively.

This paper deals with the fast modeling and fast multiobjective optimal design of mechatronic systems. To solve this problem, the object-oriented modeling language Modelica and object-oriented programming language Java have been used to build an innovate software platform. This platform has been designed to allow multidisciplinary design optimization of complex systems using a free platform. This platform only contains open-source tools and frameworks and was validated on an optimization application: the stabilization of a quarter-car system.

In this paper, we present a transformation that maps type-level expressions from functional higher-order, typed (HOT) languages to type-level expressions in object-oriented HOT languages by mapping higher-order types to type parameters of generics that are constrained with appropriate concepts. We introduce a novel form of "defunctionalization" and a correctness criterion based on the kind structure of the transformed expression, and show that our transformation preserves kind structure. The transformation is retargetable, based on two new kernel languages that can be bound to different functional and object-oriented languages;we already provide bindings to Haskell as front end and C++ concepts and Scala traits in the back ends. The transformational approach presents an alternative to a language extension and is useful in particular if functional features are employed at specification time. We motivate the approach and illustrate it using three sizable functional libraries in C++ that have signatures that are automatically generated from the corresponding Haskell signatures. © 2012 ACM.

Writing applications that connect to external services and yet remain responsive and resource conscious is a difficult task. With the rise of web programming this has become a common problem. The solution lies in using asynchronous operations that separate issuing a request from waiting for its completion. However, doing so in common object-oriented languages is difficult and error prone. Asynchronous operations rely on callbacks, forcing the programmer to cede control. This inversion of control-flow impedes the use of structured control constructs, the staple of sequential code. In this paper, we describe the language support for asynchronous programming in the upcoming version of C-#. The feature enables asynchronous programming using structured control constructs. Our main contribution is a precise mathematical description that is abstract (avoiding descriptions of compiler-generated state machines) and yet sufficiently concrete to allow important implementation properties to be identified and proved correct.
