Software evolution is an essential challenge for all software engineers, typically addressed solely using code versioning systems and language-specific code analysis tools. Most versioning systems view the evolution of a system as a directed acyclic graph of steps, with independent branches that could be merged. What these systems fail to provide is the ability to ensure stable APIs or that each subsequent evolution represents a cohesive extension yielding a valid system. Modular software evolution ensures that APIs remain stable, which is achieved by ensuring that only additional methods, fields, and data types are added, while treating existing modules through blackbox interfaces. Even with these restrictions, it must be possible to add new variations, fields, and methods without extensive duplication of prior module code. In contrast to most literature, our focus is on ensuring modular software evolution using mainstream object-oriented programming languages, instead of resorting to novel language extensions. We present a novel CoCo design pattern that supports type-safe covariantly overridden convert methods to transform earlier data type instances into their newest evolutionary representation to access operations that had been added later. CoCo supports both binary methods and producer methods. We validate and contrast our approach using a well-known compiler construction case study that other researchers have also investigated for modular evolution. Our resulting implementation relies on less boilerplate code, is completely type-safe, and allows clients to use normal object-oriented calling conventions. We also compare CoCo with existing approaches to the Expression Problem. This article reviews and discusses various applications of object-oriented programming languages. A history in brief on development of object-oriented methods eventually leading to emergence of important soft programming techniques is discussed. Family polymorphism is an object-oriented programming feature which facilitates the definition of groups of classes (families) that are allowed to be used together while statically forbidding them to be mixed with classes outside their families. Unfortunately, this feature has not been yet adopted by mainstream industrial-strength programming languages. Consequently, in Java, the idea of non-mixable families is prone to be implemented in a statically unsafe fashion, affecting the programs' intelligibility. In order to support program comprehension, we present an approach to detect code fragments where types of references are correlated within a family; nonetheless, these correlations are hidden behind the references' declarations. We obtained promising results during the initial design and evaluation iterations, based on the analysis of a software system where the presence of families was previously reported.

PHP applications provide various interfaces for end-users to interact with on the Web. They thus are prone to taint-style vulnerabilities such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. For its high efficiency, static taint analysis is widely adopted to detect taint-style vulnerabilities before application deployment. Unfortunately, due to the high complexity of the PHP language, implementing a precise static taint analysis is difficult. The existing taint analysis solutions suffer from both high false positives and high false negatives because of their incomprehensive inter-procedural analysis and a variety of implementation issues. In this work, we present TChecker, a context-sensitive inter-procedural static taint analysis tool to detect taint-style vulnerabilities in PHP applications. We identify that supporting objects and type systems is critical for statically analyzing programs written in the dynamic language PHP. We first carefully model the PHP objects and the related object-oriented programming features in TChecker. It then iteratively performs an inter-procedural data-flow analysis on PHP objects to refine object types, thus could precisely identify the call targets. We also take a considerable amount of effort in supporting other dynamic features of PHP such as dynamic includes. We comprehensively evaluated TChecker on a diverse set of modern PHP applications and demonstrated its high effectiveness in vulnerability detection. Specifically, TChecker successfully detected 18 previously unknown vulnerabilities in these PHP applications. We compared TChecker with the related static analysis tools and found that it significantly outperformed them by detecting more vulnerabilities. TChecker could also find all the vulnerabilities the existing tools detect with a relatively good precision. We release the source code of our prototype implementation to facilitate future research. © 2022 ACM.

CAPre: Code-Analysis based Prefetching for Persistent object Stores

Data prefetching aims to improve access times to data storage systems by predicting data records that are likely to be accessed by subsequent requests and retrieving them into a memory cache before they are needed. In the case of Persistent object Stores, previous approaches to prefetching have been based on predictions made through analysis of the store's schema, which generates rigid predictions, or monitoring access patterns to the store while applications are executed, which introduces memory and/or computation overhead. In this paper, we present CAPre, a novel prefetching system for Persistent object Stores based on static code analysis of object-oriented applications. CAPre generates the predictions at compile-time and does not introduce any overhead to the application execution. Moreover, CAPre is able to predict large amounts of objects that will be accessed in the near future, thus enabling the object store to perform parallel prefetching if the objects are distributed, in a much more aggressive way than in schema-based prediction algorithms. We integrate CAPre into a distributed Persistent object Store and run a series of experiments that show that it can reduce the execution time of applications from 9% to over 50%, depending on the nature of the application and its persistent data model. A novel framework is presented, which simplifies the integration of machine learning into systems for industrial inspection and testing. In contrast to most approaches utilizing a centralized setup, the proposed work follows an edge-computing paradigm. The scope is not limited to inspection tasks but includes all requirements connected to such tasks. The support for continual and distributed learning, as well as distributed accumulation of training data, is a crucial feature of the proposed system. An integrated user rights management allows for the collaboration of multiple people with different background of expertise and tasks on the same machine learning models. Through platform-independent design and the use of a progressive web app as a user-interface, this framework supports the deployment in heterogeneous systems. Separation of concerns and clean object-oriented design makes the framework highly extensible and adaptable to other domains. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Modern software systems are constantly evolving and therefore subject to change. Model-based knowledge about software systems improves traceability, supports software evolution processes, and helps in quality prediction. Model transformation is often used to make heterogeneous model-based knowledge usable for model-consuming processes such as quality prediction. The goal of this work is to automate model-driven knowledge transformation and rule-based knowledge refinement to support model-consuming processes. Therefore, a model-driven composition and refinement approach is introduced that links model-generating processes such as reverse engineering with model-consuming processes such as quality prediction. The approach is realized in the form of a metamodel-independent framework that can be adapted to different target metamodels. The refinement rules of our approach are formulated using a high-level programming language. Besides the metamodel-independent framework, we present a concrete instantiation of the framework for a software architecture model for quality prediction. To demonstrate the approach, the instantiation of the framework is applied to six case studies. The results indicate that we can perform a lossless composition of input information into output models. Furthermore, the demonstration shows that the metamodel-independent framework enables knowledge refinement, achieving an F-score of 1.0 by enforcing eight specific refinement rules.
