This paper presents a proposal for a quasi-opticaldesign for a terahertz band multi-channel front-end that has the potential application in China's future 5m terahertz telescope in Dome A, Antarctica. The front-end provides quasioptical beam coupling between the Cassegrain antenna system and the heterodyne receiver arrays operating in two bands simultaneously. Numerical verification of the design was performed using the Gaussian optics and parallelized physical optics algorithms.

Recent lithographic technologies allow for the fabrication of high period diffractive structures on planar and curved optical surfaces with high precision. Such diffractive surfaces offer the opticaldesigner extra degrees of freedom, which are of special importance for optical systems, where light collection efficiency is important. We illustrate the usage and benefit of diffractive elements within fast optical systems in various applications. For these hybrid design classes it is mandatory to include the realistic as-built performance of the employed diffractive elements into the design phase. Correspondingly we present simulation techniques to include fabrication specific diffraction efficiencies and stray light into the optimization and evaluation process.

A solution of the nonsymmetrical optical system to collect laser echo light is presented, which is based half on imaging optics and half on non-imaging optics. The difficulty in the design of the large field and large aperture optical system used to collect the laser echo is analyzed, and the influence of the aberration and cylindrical lens to the system is illuminated. The whole system is initially designed by CODE V, and the transmittance of system is analyzed by LightTools. The result shows that the transmittance of any interested direction is more than 80%, and the system is feasible in practice.

Due to increasing environmental limitations on the use of certain raw materials used to make optical glasses, there is now an economic desire to minimize the number of glasses used in lens design. This paper presents the results of a study to create a suggested universal catalogue that contains the minimum number of glasses needed to satisfy most possible lens designs. A nearly symmetric double Gauss lens is used in the glass selection process. As part of this study, the relationship between the error function and the number of glasses chosen is studied, and in addition, a glass range study is also carried out. Three different lens libraries were studied using the global optimization method and the most frequently chosen glasses were then compiled into the suggested universal glass catalogue. A suggested universal glass catalogue constructed from this study is presented.

Several approaches have been demonstrated to build focus tunable lenses. The additional degree of freedom enables the design of elegant, compact optical systems, typically with less mechanics. We present a new range of electrically and mechanically focus tunable lenses of different sizes and tuning ranges and discuss their characteristics. We show how tunable lenses can be used to improve opticaldesign for auto-focus and zoom in terms of size, quality and speed. Furthermore, we present an LED-based spot light with variable illumination angle, which shows optimal performance in terms of spot quality and optical efficiency.
