OPGW optical cables carry the vast majority of power system communication services and have a direct impact on the safety and reliability of power system communication and the power grid. Fiber optic composite overhead ground wire is greatly affected by strain, which not only affects the quality of fiber core communication, but also causes safety accidents such as cable breakage and tower collapse, seriously threatening the operation safety of the power grid. The main cause of these accidents is due to stress concentration, which occurs when the stress exceeds the design value. This article aims to simulate the different stress states of optical cables during real operation by applying different degrees of tension using Brillouin sensing technology, tensile testing machines, and pulley testing machines. The strain state of the returned optical cable is experimentally studied to analyze the causes of cable failures and provide reference and guidance for the construction of new optical cable lines. The linear correspondence between Brillouin scattering light power and frequency shift and external temperature/strain provides a theoretical basis for distributed fiber optic sensing. This article uses the principle of Brillouin sensing to design and simulate the strain changes of optical cables under different tensions during operation and different bending during construction, using returned optical cables. Repeated experiments are conducted, and the experimental results show that both horizontal tensile tension and optical cable bending will cause an increase in optical cable strain to varying degrees. When the optical cable is subjected to a horizontal tension of 60% RTS, strain begins to occur. As the horizontal tension increases, the strain also increases, and the strain suddenly increases when the horizontal tension reaches 100% RTS.
