With the aim of constantly reducing the prices and manufacturing times of space optical instruments, CNES has carried out research and development activities to evaluate new optical concepts for medium-resolution imaging applications. In reality, this study had two objectives. The first consisted of defining a disruptive optical architecture to significantly improve the compactness of telescopes. For this, we decided to target annular telescopes, which offer great compactness with a large numerical aperture, very interesting characteristics for small instruments. The second objective sought was to test a new manufacturing process, which will speed up production times. This is why the diamond turning point was chosen to create the prototype. We will therefore first present the optical design compromise between two interesting solutions for imaging applications. Detailed analyses were performed with optical software tools to prepare manufacturing files. In a second part, a description of the finalized prototype will be provided. It will focus on the opto-mechanical principle but also on the manufacturing quality obtained with diamond machining. Finally, we will detail all the characterizations on the prototype with and without sensor: optical performances evaluated in the laboratory as well as a set of images acquired on different realistic scenes. We will conclude and present perspectives for future versions.

BIFROST is one of the upcoming visitor instruments within the ASGARD array. BIFROST will be deployed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer ("VLTI") and is currently under development at University of Exeter. We present the instrumentation design and implementation of a dual-field light source for the calibration and design of the BIFROST instrument within Exeter "Vanaheim". The system consists of a beam expander and splitter with associated optics to create an on- and off-axis beam simultaneously. An approach to calibrate the angle of the off-axis beam using an open loop controller is discussed. This report will discuss the OpticStudio-Zemax design and the initial implementation of the system at Exeter.

Hair-thin strands of multimode optical fibre (MMF) can operate as ultra-low footprint endoscopes - delivering subcellular resolution images from deep inside the body at the tip of a fine needle. However, images transmitted through MMFs are unrecognisably distorted. Here we present two new ways to unscramble this light and recover images. Firstly, we describe a new in-situ calibration technique requiring access to only the input end of the fibre promising a way to image through flexible fibres. Secondly, we describe the design of a new optical element - an 'optical inverter' - that can unscramble all modes in parallel, offering the potential of single-shot and super-resolution imaging through MMFs.

The MAVIS instrument (MCAO-Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph), designed for visible light observations, is a significant advancement in adaptive optics technology. To rigorously test MAVIS and ensure its smooth on-sky performance, we have developed a dedicated Verification Test Bench (VTB). The VTB serves as an internal tool during the Assembly, Integration, and testing (AIT) phase, and is crucial in conducting essential tests related to wavefront error correction via a ground-conjugated deformable mirror. In this work, we provide brief descriptions of the foreseen tests for MAVIS that require the use of the VTB. A particular focus of the study is dedicated to the preliminary design of the VTB. We present the optomechanical implementation envisaged for it, emphasising system requirements and optical design constraints.

The ANAtOLIA (Atmospheric moNitoring to Assess the availability of optical LInks through the Atmosphere) project funded by the European Space Agency, aims to ground sites selection and assess their availabilities for optical links through the atmosphere. In the same way than Astronomical observations, space-to-ground optical communications are limited by clouds, aerosols and atmospheric turbulence. Therefore, we developed in the framework of the ANAtOLIA project, an innovative and efficient instrumentation and methods to accurately measure, analyze, characterize, and ultimately predict critical atmospheric parameters for the purposes of the selection of the astronomical and OGS (optical Ground Station) sites and the evaluation of their availability. The main mission objectives of ANAtOLIA are to design, manufacture, procure and assembly a self-standing and autonomous ground support equipment, comprising cloud, aerosol and turbulence monitoring to deliver precise measurements of the atmosphere transmission. After two years of instrumental specifications, design, development and on sky tests, the ANAtOLIA station in now installed in four different European sites since February 2023. ANAtOLIA is a compact mobile station consisting of the GMT monitor (Generalized Monitor of Turbulence), Reuniwatt Sky Insight camera and Cimel CE318-T photometer, which is operational 24h a day, 7 days a week in any site around the world with minimal infrastructure. The data collected with these ANAtOLIA monitors during a 24 month campaign, will be correlated with data available from other sources of cloud coverage and atmospheric conditions (e.g., MSG, MODIS, local meteorological sites), to improve knowledge of the optical link availability for selected OGS sites and to carry out a long-term validation of the optical link availability prediction methods.

The MOONS (Multi-Object optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph) is a twin, fibre-fed spectrograph for the VLT. Each spectrograph is fed with 512 fibres, the light from which is dispersed into three arms covering the RI, YJ and H bands. A separate camera is provided for each band, requiring six cameras to be produced and individually aligned. All six cameras have been assembled, aligned and cryogenically tested. The RI and YJ cameras, have been successfully integrated into the MOONS instrument cryostat and two more, including at least one of the H-band cameras are expected to be fitted for the next cool-down. Following an overview of the optical design of the camera, this paper presents the mechanical design together with stray light analysis and the inclusion of baffling. Six sets of optics have been provided by Bertin Winlight and an overview of their metrology data is presented. After assembly and pre-alignment of the first set of optics into the camera housing, a series of static and dynamic tests were carried out to ensure that the optics would remain in alignment following handling, transportation and ESO specified earthquake conditions. The pre-alignment stage and subsequent mechanical tests are described together with results from displacement and impulse testing. Because of the steep aspheric surfaces of the camera optics each set must be aligned in tilt and de-space at cryogenic temperatures. The facility specifically designed to accommodate the cryogenic alignment and stability testing of the MOONS cameras is presented and the fine alignment process under both warm and cryogenic conditions is described. Results from the final alignment stage and the stability of alignment under cryogenic cooling are presented and discussed.

We are presenting in this work, the final design of the Multi-Object Adaptive Optics system for the Gemini InfraRed Multi Object Spectrograph (GIRMOS). This report outlines key modifications made during the critical design phase as we progress towards the manufacturing assembly integration and testing stage. Our adjustments include in particular, the wavefront sensor subassembly through the selection of a new camera and by optimizing the number of sub-apertures and pixels. Additionally, recent advancements in the Gemini North Adaptive Optics (GNAO) design prompt a reassessment of Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) and tomographic performance, thus influencing both multi-Objects Adaptive Optics (MOAO) and the GIRMOS imager. The final optical and mechanical design of the MOAO subsystem as well as the revisited performance is discussed. Since the beginning of the project, we have identified some risks associated to the MOAO system and developed mitigation strategies and activities. We report the progress made towards the mitigation of identified risks such as open-loop calibration and control, go-to errors, quasi-static errors, etc. A primary objective driving the development of GIRMOS is the survey of a substantial sample of high-redshift galaxies. Using AO observations of z similar to 2 galaxies, as seen with SINFONI at the Very Large Telescope, and employing image processing techniques with various GIRMOS simulated point spread functions (PSFs), we methodically explore the GIRMOS ability to detect and characterize star-forming clumps within high-redshift galaxies. This analysis provides valuable insights into optimal target selection based on their positioning in the field of view, on the observing conditions (such as seeing, zenith angle, etc.), and the intended scientific objectives.

The Galway Liverpool imaging polarimeter (GLIP) has been designed to perform simultaneous linear and circular polarimetric measurements at sub-second cadence. The science goal of the instrument is to perform observations of fast evolving astronomical transients with leading robotic telescope facilities. GLIP builds on the legacy of polarimeter instruments developed by the Liverpool Telescope team of the Astrophysical Research Institute, Liverpool, with the RINGO & MOPTOP series, and the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) with the GASP polarimeter. The instrument works as a four-beam imaging polarimeter of a 2.3' field-of-view onto one detector, allowing the determination of the full Stokes vector [I Q U V] across the image field once the characteristic matrix of the instrument is known. optical design, characterisation of polarimetry and tolerance of the instrument optical components using computational, lab testing result & mathematical methods are discussed.

The Argus optical Array is a synoptic survey instrument that will use 900 commercial off-the-shelf telescopes to cover a composite all-sky of view with a total collecting area equivalent to a 5-meter telescope. We are currently carrying out a staged development process, leading up to the construction of the 38-telescope Argus Pathfinder system, which will observe the entire Northern sky between -20 degrees < delta < 72 degrees each night for 15 minutes per field. Argus Pathfinder is currently scheduled for a Q3 2022 deployment to the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute in Rosman, NC. The Argus Array Technology Demonstrator (A2TD) is the first in this series of prototype instruments, and consists of 9-telescopes in a fiberglass enclosure on a tracking platform. The A2TD is a tool for rapid development, testing, and performance validation of the essential subsystems of the Argus Array design, including a custom-developed tracking drive and polar alignment system, thermal environment control, optical windows, and observatory control. The A2TD is also used for on-sky validation of telescope and camera pairs that have been bench-aligned, and for development of observatory automation and control software that are either directly transferable or scalable to later development stages, including the Argus Pathfinder. In this paper, we present the development process and design of the Argus Technology Demonstrator, and highlight early results from on-sky testing with the instrument.

The Thirty Meter Telescope primary mirror consists of 492 1.4 m diameter hexagonal segments. A CGH-assisted interferometric testbed has been developed to quickly and accurately measure surface figure error of the 82 different segment prescriptions. In this paper, technical aspects of the testbed will be described, including interferometer design, techniques to reduce sensitivity to vibration and turbulence, use of CGH phase fiducials for 6 degree-of-freedom alignment of the interferometer to the Test Plate, proximity sensors for segment-to-Test Plate alignment, synthetic extended source technique to mitigate coherent artifacts, characterization of instrument transfer function, and system calibration. A surface figure error map of a "Type 0" full-scale segment will also be presented.
