optical sensors are quickly evolving to meet the fast-paced demands of smartphones and mobile devices. These increasingly sophisticated sensors include multi-channel ambient light sensors and integrated sensor modules, with continuous improvements in sensor sensitivity, accuracy, and dynamic range performance. With billions of devices manufactured per year, test throughput, repeatability, stability, and accuracy are critical to success. Current production test systems use traditional sources (bulbs or individual LEDs) or multiple LED based simulation systems, but these have limitations (high variability, insufficient throughput, and low resolution) making them unable to efficiently meet the test needs of the advanced optical sensors being developed and deployed. We explore the system architecture of a novel high fidelity light source capable of creating, matching, and replicating spectra over the wavelength range of 380 to 780nm with 4.5nm FWHM resolution. This capability gives the ability to generate a near-infinite number of spectra ranging from incandescent to a highly structured source such as a compact fluorescent lamp. The system integrates a high brightness Laser Driven Light Source (TM) and a proprietary high throughput spectral light engine to achieve the needed repeatability, stability, and dynamic range performance. The instrument was developed with automated test in mind and offers an easy-to-use application interface for system configuration, output characterization, creation and matching of test spectra, and storage of matched spectra to the instrument. The embedded controller deploys application firmware with onboard algorithms, data management, controls, system monitoring, a communications API, and a TTL interface for test system integration. Instrument architecture decisions and performance data such as repeatability, resolution, stability, and dynamic range will be presented.

The implementation of the 4MOST Facility at the ESO Paranal 4-meter VISTA wide-field telescope requires a substantial modification of the telescope. Since the current acquisition and guiding (A&G) and wavefront sensing optical systems (WFS) are embedded in VIRCAM and will be removed with it, replacements had to be provided. Although the A&G and WFS cameras will serve different purposes, they share common requirements. Among the shared requirements, a few are particularly challenging. For example, the environmental conditions the cameras will be exposed to require them to have an IP54 protection and due to their location, they cannot dissipate heat to the ambient air. To ensure optical alignment, the cameras must have very accurate housing and mechanical interfaces. In addition, both have to be integrated into an existing telescope control environment, with all that this entails in terms of service interfaces and protocols that can be used (e.g. GigE Vision), as well as operational requirements that must be met. After considering the specific performance requirements for the A&G cameras, the WFS detectors and the secondary guider sensor, a decision was made to use the same custom designed CCD camera model for all of them. These cameras are provided by Spectral Instruments. In this work we present the requirements for such cameras, their opto-mechanical design and the first results of their verification campaign, both at Spectral Instrument and AIP premises.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) is an all-sky spectroscopic survey of >6 million objects, designed to decode the history of the Milky Way, reveal the inner working of the stars, investigate the origin of solar systems, and track the growth of supermassive black holes across the Universe. The Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is one of three surveys that form SDSS-V, and it consists of four telescopes optimized for broad visible-wavelength coverage of 360-980 nm feeding three fiber-fed R similar to 4000 spectrographs. Each telescope comprises a siderostat and an optical table that hosts powered refracting optics in a triplet configuration, hardware for image de-rotation, image acquisition and guiding systems, and a focal plane assembly. The optical design of LVM balances the science requirements for broad wavelength coverage and spaxel size with the focal ratio imposed by the spectrograph fibers and microlenses. Initial design was completed and optimized in Zemax OpticStudio software. The resulting lenses were fabricated by a vendor and assembled at Carnegie Observatories. Final testing will be on-sky at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile during commissioning in 2022. The assembly process includes bonding of the triplet lenses using Dow Corning SYLGARD 184 Silicone Elastomer ("Sylgard 184") and mounting in a cell that travels on a motorized focusing stage on the optical table. We present details of the Sylgard 184 bonding process, a basic bonding procedure, recovery from a stress feature in two bonds, and removal of Sylgard during imperfect applications.

The EXoplanet Climate Infrared TElescope (EXCITE) experiment is a balloon-borne, purpose-designed mission to measure spectroscopic phase curves of short-period extrasolar giant planets (EGPs, or "hot Jupiters"). Here, we present EXCITE's principal science instrument: a high-throughput, single-object spectrograph operating in the 0.8-2.5 mu m and 2.5-4.0 mu m bands with R >= 50. Our compact design achieves diffraction-limited, on-axis performance with just three powered optics: two off-axis parabolic mirrors and a CaF2 prism. We discuss the optical and mechanical design, the expected optical performance of the spectrograph, and summarize the tolerances needed to achieve that performance. We also discuss plans for establishing alignment of the optics and verifying the optical performance.

This paper presents an update on the construction, testing, and commissioning of the SDSS-V Local Volume Mapper (LVM) telescope system. LVM is one of three surveys that form the fifth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and it will employ a coordinated network of four, 16-cm telescopes feeding three fiber spectrographs at the Las Campanas Observatory. The goal is to spectrally map approximately 2500 square degrees of the Galactic plane with 37 '' spatial resolution and R similar to 4000 spectral resolution over the wavelength range 360-980 nm. LVM will also target the Magellanic Clouds and other Local Group galaxies. Each of the four LVM telescopes consists of a two-mirror siderostat in alt-alt configuration feeding an optical breadboard. This produces a fixed, stable focal plane for the fiber-based Integral Field Unit (IFU). One telescope hosts the science IFU, while two others observe adjacent fields to calibrate geocoronal emission. The fourth telescope makes rapid observations of bright stars to compensate telluric absorption. The entrance slits of the spectrographs intersperse the fibers from all three types of telescope, producing truly simultaneous science and calibration exposures. We summarize the final design of the telescope system and report on its construction, alignment and testing in the laboratory. We also describe our deployment plan for commissioning at LCO, anticipated for late 2022.

The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) [1, 2] is a 4-meter solar observatory under construction at Haleakala, Hawaii. The Gregorian optical System (GOS) is located at the secondary focus of the telescope and actuates different apertures and optics into the beam in order to facilitate configuration of the telescope for science and calibration activities. The GOS apertures define the telescope field of view at the Gregorian focus and permits simultaneous calibration by multiple instruments. Due its location near Gregorian focus, the GOS design addresses several challenges in the areas of installation, alignment, and thermal management. In this paper we describe these challenges and explain how we used modeling and simulation analyses to guide design choices. We will review results and limitations from the GOS lab acceptance testing process, look at lessons learned from integration at the summit, and share initial results from on-sun testing. We conclude by comparing on-sun test results with predictions from our design phase analyses.

Free Space optical (FSO) Communications data link offers high data rates with low system complexity but atmospheric attenuation, such as fog, alters signal integrity. In the paper, we present a novel low-cost visible band FSO system design and its performance evaluations in foggy conditions. Using LTSPICE design tools, we proposed a low-cost transmitter and receiver circuits. We built a fog-testing chamber and FSO systems to measure different transmitter sources by analyzing DC carrier powers and digital AC signals at 1MHz. A He-Ne laser at 630nm was used to calibrate chamber fog density and measure the steady state performance. Concurrently, we developed a CAD model of our FSO systems using Synopsys Optsim and obtained FSO system performance at different foggy levels to compare with our experimental results. The red laser diode (LD) at 658nm has the best performance in foggy environments with experimental attenuation of -0.20dB and simulated attenuation of -0.63dB. The green LD at 520nm and violet LD at 405nm experience experimental attenuation of -0.35dB and -0.53dB respectively. Despite beam divergence, the red LED at 615nm has good performance in foggy environments with experimental attenuation of -0.33dB and simulated attenuation of -5.2dB. The yellow LED at 590nm, green LED at 522nm, and blue LED at 470nm experience an experimental attenuation of -0.51dB, -2.2dB, and - 0.72dB respectively.

A secondary imaging convergence system is designed for a cooled infrared optical system with three Germanium lenses. An optimal design method for low stray radiation is proposed. Compared with the traditional method, stray light analysis shows that the new design method can suppress stray radiation by 23.87% more than the traditional method.

The joint European Space Agency and Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer mission (SMILE) aims to develop a global scale understanding of the interaction between the solar weather and the Earth's magnetosphere-ionosphere. The soft X- ray imager (SXI) is one of the instruments on board and will observe photons emitted in the 200 eV to 2000 eV energy range from the solar wind charge exchange process using two large 4510 x 4510 pixel CCD370s as a focal plane. The CCD370s take their design and qualification heritage from similar sensors being used in the PLATO mission, with specific modifications to optimize their performance in this soft X-ray energy range. SMILE will orbit Earth in a highly elliptical orbit and will pass through the radiation belts every 52 hours. The trapped and solar protons present will gradually damage the CCDs throughout the 3-year mission and degrade their performance. To understand the impact the damage has on the devices a series of proton radiation campaigns are being undertaken. These campaigns are being performed with flight-like SMILE CCDs, and functionally similar PLATO devices, with follow-up characterization across from -130 to -85 degrees C. The most recent irradiation campaign has been completed using a PLATO CCD280 kept below -85 degrees C for irradiation and characterization, and the results show that the measured parallel charge transfer inefficiency varies with temperature between 1x10(-4) and 4x10(-4) in unbinned full-frame readout mode. The effect of temperature annealing up to -85 degrees C on the parallel charge transfer inefficiency has also been assessed and shows that no temperature-dependent annealing of the radiation-induced damage has been observed. A similar behavior is expected to be seen in the SMILE devices, albeit with an anticipated improvement by a factor 3-4 due to the modifications made to the design. To assemble and align the optical system, it is required to minimize the sensitivity of the optical system while maximizing the performance. However, sensitivity increases as the performance is optimized. To balance the sensitivity and performance, an efficient sensitivity analysis method is established to confirm the sensitivity right after the optical design is complete. The simplified analysis method reduces the individual analysis time to 1/5 of the full analysis. As a result, the final performance met the requirement and the sensitivity was minimized reducing the complexity and time of the final design process to 1/5 compared to the previous program.
