Fiber optic technologies are important real-time fracture diagnostics and monitoring tools. Simulating field temperature and strain responses using a coupled geomechanical-thermal-flow simulation approach remains challenging, even with the use of commercial software packages. This study presents a novel comprehensive modelling strategy for constructing coupled flow-geomechanical-thermal simulations to analyze fracturing processes in subsurface flow applications. This paper is the first study that meticulously examines different model set-up options, illustrating how commercial packages can be utilized in this context. A 3D deformable finite-element geomechanics system and dual-porosity-dual-permeability flow and thermal simulations are conducted. A dynamic node-splitting technique facilitates the modelling of hydraulic fracture (HF) opening and propagation. The model responses-including fracture geometry, injection pressure, and temperature-are thoroughly validated against several analytical solutions. Geomechanical responses such as displacement, strain, and strain rate are validated against a well-established numerical solution. Our model responses of strain-rate characteristics are compared to field Low-Frequency Distributed Acoustic Sensing (LF-DAS) data. A qualitative analysis has been conducted to explain the possible mechanisms behind the commonly observed optical phase-shifting phenomena in LFDAS plots. Given that fluid injection and fracturing are commonly encountered in a wide range of geo-energy applications, the work presented in this study offers valuable insights into analyzing these processes and designing fiber-optic monitoring tools.

Existing literature on ejectors, different researchers utilized different turbulence models by their choice, neither analyzing the physics of turbulence nor providing any sufficient optical diagnostics of the flow field. In this article, the physics captured by the Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are compared based on well-posed boundary conditions obtained experimentally from a carbon dioxide (CO2) CO 2 ) vapor compression cycle with an error <= 2.5%. The experimental results utilized for this study are at Reynold's number (Re) 1.2e5 at the high-pressure inlet (motive flow) maintaining CO2 in subcritical state. The low-pressure inlet (suction flow) is maintained at Re = 9.8e4 with CO2 in vapor state, providing a pressure lift ratio of 1.2 at the diffuser outlet. Comparison of flow topologies with different URANS models reveals that only standard, Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-omega, and Reynold's Stress Model-Shear Stress Gradient (RSM-SSG) are the suitable URANS models capturing a linearly increasing anisotropy tensor component with increasing strain in the flow. LES also predicted the similar physics. However, standard k - omega overpredicted the suction pressure beyond the acceptable uncertainty limits, which made it inapplicable. For the first time, a spatio-temporal representation of the flow topology with LES revealed the actual jet morphology of a CO2 ejector. Specifically, finger-like structures are key features to entrain more surrounding warm fluid into the colder dense core fluid at the cost of destabilizing and breaking up the jet by stretching the streamwise vortices and obstructing the increase in pressure-lift ratio.

Path-Integrated Stereo X-Ray Digital Image Correlation: Resolving the Violation of Conservation of Intensity

BackgroundX-ray imaging addresses many challenges with visible light imaging in extreme environments, where optical diagnostics such as digital image correlation (DIC) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) suffer biases from index of refraction changes and/or cannot penetrate visibly occluded objects. However, conservation of intensity-the fundamental principle of optical image correlation algorithms-may be violated if ancillary components in the X-ray path besides the surface or fluid of interest move during the *** test series treated in this work sought to characterize the safe use of fiber-epoxy composites in aerospace and aviation industries during fire accident scenarios. Stereo X-ray DIC was employed to measure test unit deformation in an extreme thermal environment involving a visibly occluded test unit, incident surface heating to temperatures above 600oC, and flames and soot from combusting epoxy decomposition gasses. The objective of the current work is to evaluate two solutions to resolve the violation of conservation of intensity that resulted from both the test unit and the thermal chamber deforming during the *** first solution recovered conservation of intensity by pre-processing the path-integrated X-ray images to isolate the DIC pattern of the test unit from the thermal chamber components. These images were then correlated with standard, optical DIC software. The second solution, called Path-Integrated Digital Image Correlation (PI-DIC), modified the fundamental matching criterion of DIC to account for multiple, independently-moving components contributing to the final image intensity. Performance and reliability requirements for modern optical systems dictate that they can no longer be simulated in isolation without reference to external and environmental factors which can adversely impact image quality. Simultaneously, advances in multi-physics simulation techniques have made it possible to couple the impacts of, for example, thermal changes and structural stresses to optical analysis to better predict performance in operational conditions. Applications where light propagates through a fluid surrounding or within an optical system present a particular simulation challenge in this regard, and one that requires new simulation techniques. In the near-field, variations in pressure, temperature, and density of the fluid give rise to corresponding variations in refractive index that will, in turn, induce optical aberrations in a transmitted wavefront. These aberrations can lead to degraded image quality and line-of-sight errors. Accurate and robust analysis of such effects necessitates the coupling of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), for simulation of turbulent flow, shock waves, etc. with ray tracing to compute key optical metrics. Furthermore, this analysis can be combined with far-field atmospheric effects, including emissivity, absorption, scattering, refraction, to build a comprehensive picture of system performance. The ability to perform multi-physics simulations early in the design process provides the opportunity to develop strategies to identify and mitigate negative performance drivers. We present a solution to model the effects of light propagation through optical fluids accurately and combine this with analysis of structural and thermal effects. This solution will be demonstrated in use cases including electro-optic infrared airborne systems.

In this paper, the flow patterns of flat-plate oscillating heat pipe (FPOHP) at different operation stages were analyzed by infrared thermal imaging. The FPOHP with a working fluid of HFE-347 and a heating power of 20W to 140W was placed vertically. A high speed camera is used to record the flow direction and state of the working fluid in the FPOHP, and the temperature distribution of the FPOHP at different operation stages is recorded by infrared thermal imager. The experimental results show that the flow pattern of the FPOHP can be divided into non-oscillation stage, transition stage and stable operation stage according to the different flow state of working fluid. The temperature distribution presented by infrared thermal image is synchronous with the wall temperature fluctuation of FPOHP and the change of the working fluid flow direction. The flow pattern of the working fluid and the heat transfer performance of FPOHP can be qualitatively judged by infrared thermal imaging. © 2024 SPIE.

Existing phase holdup measurement methods are mainly based on contact measurement, and long-term monitoring is easily affected by strong downhole interference environment. In order to solve this problem, a non-contact thermal oil-water two-phase flow phase holdup measurement method is proposed in this paper. The thermal conduction downhole oil-water two-phase flow holdup measurement model based on graphene electric heating belt is established using fluent, and the phase distribution characteristics of oil-water two-phase flow with different moisture contents at low flow rates are analyzed. The results show that the non-contact thermal flowmeter can realize the measurement of low flow rate fluid phase holdup, which lays a foundation for the measurement of two-phase flow holdup and production logging. © 2024 SPIE.

Deicing and status characteristics of dual-side pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharge

The deicing process and its status characteristics of dual-side pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) are studied via electro-optical diagnostics, thermal properties, and numerical simulation. Experimental results show that the dual-side pulsed SDBD can remove the glaze ice compared to the traditional pulsed SDBD under the applied pulse voltage of 8 kV and a pulse frequency of 1 kHz. The maximal temperature of dual-side pulsed SDBD reaches 39.5 degrees C under the discharge time of 800 s, while the maximal temperature of traditional pulsed SDBD is still below ice point about -7.8 degrees C. Surface temperatures of dual-side pulsed SDBD demonstrate that the SDBD with a gap of 1 mm possesses prospects in deicing. The maximal surface temperature reaches 37.1 degrees C under the pulse of 8 kV after the discharge time of 90 s. Focusing on the thermal effect, a two-dimensional plasma fluid model is implemented, and the results also indicate that the dual-side pulsed SDBD with a gap of 1 mm produces a highest heat density among the three different configurations. Comparing the spatial-temporal evolutions of plasma on both dielectric sides, primary positive streamer has a longer propagation length of 8.6 mm than the secondary negative streamer, the primary negative streamer, and the secondary positive streamer, which induces a long heat covered area. Four stages of deicing process are analyzed through a series of electrical parameters under different covered ice conditions.

Laser welding has been actively used in automotive manufacturing and other fields because of its non-contact and easy operation. In particular, the demand for high-quality welding of copper and aluminum is increasing due to the growing popularity of electric vehicles. However, conventional laser welding has led to problems such as spatter and unstable weld beads. Assist gas is one solution to improve welding efficiency and stabilize weld quality. In this study, two new nozzles for laser head scanning and Galvano scanning were developed that can simultaneously flow and suction gas to the laser welding area. In butt welding of steel using an infrared laser, fume removal from the laser optical axis and elimination of undercuts were achieved by airflow through the nozzles. In spot irradiation of copper using a blue laser, it was confirmed that fumes could be controlled by airflow and that the gas flow and suction by the nozzle produced differences in oxygen content at different processing positions.

Observing micro-vessels in conjunctiva could be used not only for diagnosing conjunctival diseases including conjunctivitis and pterygium but also as biomarkers for circulatory diseases. Many research teams have developed compact imaging and auto-analysis systems to simplify the conventional slit lamp as well as enhance the analysis process. The imaging system, previously developed by our research team, corrects eye motion in imaging windows through image registration and template matching. The developed system quantifies blood flow velocity using the sequence of motion-corrected images. This study compares estimated flow velocity and the fluid's actual velocity using the experimental phantom comprising transparent hoses and fluid including beads corresponding to red blood cells. The flow velocities are calculated using the Hagen-Poiseuille equation, and the flow rates generated by the syringe pump. The pump applies three kinds of flow rates to generate flow velocity variations and the estimated velocities are linearly proportional to these variations. In addition, the phantom has a random motion to mimic the fixational eye movements within the range of the healthy subject's angular eye motion. Through these experiments, we verified the previously developed flow velocity measurement system having percent errors under 3% by comparing estimated flow velocities with actual flow velocities. The system's accuracy, especially under conditions without artificial motion, is over 98.5%. These experiments can provide the supporting background for feasibility and accuracy in a further clinical study in conjunctival microcirculation.

Malaysia's oil and gas fields are often characterized by multiple stacked reservoirs. This complexity is due to the region's diverse geological history, which includes various sedimentary processes and tectonic activities. The reservoirs can vary significantly in terms of depth, pressure, and fluid characteristics, requiring advanced exploration and production techniques to effectively manage and extract hydrocarbons. To improve recovery in multi-stack reservoirs, secondary recovery is required. For efficient waterflooding and recovery management, multizone completions with isolated zones are necessary and it is imperative to know the injection profile along the wellbore. In such conditions, the flow events happen behind the point of measurement and standard approaches are blind to respond to them and usually provide limited value. Reliable flow diagnostics of such wells pose a great challenge in the industry. The most promising techniques for accessing the flow performance of multizone offshore injectors with complex completions are high-precision temperature and spectral acoustic logging with subsequent numerical modeling of hydrodynamics and thermal processes in a coupled fashion to access the performance of individual reservoir layers of injection wells. The methodology addressing these complexities was developed and its feasibility and robustness were evaluated during the flow diagnostics surveys conducted in Field A of Sarawak Basin to evaluate the flow characteristics and flow geometry of two offshore injector wells. The processing of acquired data includes thermo-hydrodynamic modeling (Temperature modeling) that was carried out to quantify the injection flow profiles of target reservoir zones by matching the high-precision temperature logging data using an inverse modeling approach.
