A machine-assisted analysis of traces from crime scenes might be possible with the advent of new high-resolution non-destructive contact-less acquisition techniques for latent fingerprints. This requires reliable techniques for the automatic extraction of fingerprint features from latent and exemplar fingerprints for matching purposes using pattern recognition approaches. Therefore, we evaluate the NIST Biometric Image Software for the feature extraction and verification of contact-lessly acquired latent fingerprints to determine potential error rates. Our exemplary test setup includes 30 latent fingerprints from 5 people in two test sets that are acquired from different surfaces using a chromatic white light sensor. The first test set includes 20 fingerprints on two different surfaces. It is used to determine the feature extraction performance. The second test set includes one latent fingerprint on 10 different surfaces and an exemplar fingerprint to determine the verification performance. This utilized sensing technique does not require a physical or chemical visibility enhancement of the fingerprint residue, thus the original trace remains unaltered for further investigations. No particular feature extraction and verification techniques have been applied to such data, yet. Hence, we see the need for appropriate algorithms that are suitable to support forensic investigations.

Many carbon-based nanomaterials exhibit nonlinear optical response under intense laser radiation what makes them promising candidates for laser protection devices. They strongly attenuate intense laser light, while exhibiting high transmittance at low irradiation levels. In literature this behavior is mainly related to nonlinear absorption and nonlinear scattering. C60 and MWCNT are carbon-based materials with high optical limiting efficiency. It is generally believed that the main optical limiting mechanism of MWCNT suspensions is NL scattering whereas C60 solutions show mainly nonlinear absorption. In the case of MWCNT we observed a strong scattering signal arising near the nonlinear threshold when tested with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm, which is in agreement with results in literature. C60 exhibits only weak NL scattering and their OL behavior is due to NL absorption in the intermediate NL regime. In addition, we observed a diffraction pattern for high input energies, induced by local refractive index changes. © 2018 SPIE.

Long wavelength InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) light emitting diodes (LEDs) are essential components of solid-state lighting and displays. However, efficiency of these devices is inferior to that of blue LEDs. To a large degree, this occurs because equilibration of injected holes between multiple QWs of the active region is hindered by the high GaN quantum confinement and polarization barriers. This drawback could be overcome by lateral hole injection via semipolar QWs present on facets of V-defects that form at threading dislocations in polar GaN-based structures. In this work we have tested the viability of this injection mechanism and studied its properties by time-resolved and near-field spectroscopy techniques on multiple QW devices. We have found that indeed the hole injection via the V-defects does take place, the mechanism is fast, and the hole spread from the V-defect is substantial making this type of injection feasible for efficient long wavelength GaN LEDs. © 2024 SPIE.

In short range applications such as in the outdoor screening of people for security purposes, passive millimetre wave imaging has several benefits: it is not necessary to artificially irradiate subjects, clothing is transparent, and images have similarities to those obtained visibly. Passive millimetre wave imaging has been developed largely with defence funding and recent research has outlined video frame rate imager concepts and produced demonstrators, which may be used for security screening. This paper will outline the application of these concepts to security screening. A Ka band mechanically scanned imaging system, with a frame rate of up to 12 Hz, designed for outdoor security screening is discussed. This system is based on folded conical scan technology which has been reported previously. It is constructed from low cost materials such as polystyrene and printed circuit board. The advantages of multiple over single frame imagery are discussed. It is concluded that multiple frame imagery offers considerable advantages because weapons are varied in size and shape, and may be positioned and oriented in many ways. A human observer can more easily interpret images when a series of images is presented showing the subject from different viewing angles. The optical properties of clothing samples have been determined and examples of their spectral reflectivity and transmission are presented. Transmission is close to constant for many samples from 60 to 150 GHz, above which it decreases for some clothing materials. For example, the transmission of a cotton T-shirt is typically 95% and of a leather jacket up to 85% at lower frequencies. A model is presented for calculating the contrast of objects concealed under clothing and it indicates contrasts as large as 200 K for a weapon can be achieved outdoors. This contrast has been realised with a prototype system and example images are presented.

The Nerve gases are persistent gases that appear as very challenging menace in homeland security scenarios, due to the low pressure vapor at ambient temperature, and the very low lethal concentrations. A novel approach to the detection and identification of these very hazardous volatile compounds in large areas such as airports, underground stations, big events arenas, aimed to a high selectivity (Low false alarm probability), has been explored under the SENSEFIB Corporate Project of Finmeccanica S. p. A. The technical demonstrator under development within the Project is presented. It is based on distributed line sensors performing infrared absorption measurements to reveal even trace amounts of target compounds from the retrieval of their spectral fingerprint. The line sensor is essentially constituted by a widely tunable external cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL), coupled to IR thermoelectrically cooled MCT fast detectors by means of a infrared hollow core fibers (HCF). The air is sampled through several micro-holes along the HCF, by means of a micropump, while the infrared radiation travels inside the fiber from the source to the detector, that are optically coupled with the opposite apertures of the HCF. The architecture of the sensor and its principle of operation, in order to cover large areas with a few line sensors instead of with a grid of many point sensors, are illustrated. The sensor is designed to use the HCF as an absorption cell, exploiting long path length and very small volume, (e. g fast response), at the same time. Furthermore the distributed sensor allows to cover large areas and/or not easily accessible locations, like air ducts, with a single line sensor by extending the HCF for several tens of meters. The main components implemented in the sensor are described, in particular: the EC-QCL source to span the spectral range of wavelength between 9.15um and 9.85um;and the hollow core fiber, exhibiting a suitably low optical loss in this spectra

Low-cost semiconductor laser diode pump sources have made a dramatic impact in sectors such as advanced manufacturing. They are now disrupting other sectors, such as defence and security (D&S), where Thales UK is a manufacturer of sensor systems for application on land, sea, air and man portable. In this talk, we will first give an overview of the market trends and challenges in the D&S sector. Then we will illustrate how low cost pump diodes are enabling new directions in D&S sensors, by describing two diode pumped, solidstate laser products currently under development at Thales UK. The first is a new generation of Laser Target Designators (LTD) that are used to identify targets for the secure guiding of munitions. Current systems are bulky, expensive and require large battery packs to operate. The advent of low cost diode technology, merged with our novel solid-state laser design, has created a designator that will be the smallest, lowest cost, STANAG compatible laser designator on the market. The LTD delivers greater that 50mJ per pulse up to 20Hz, and has compact dimensions of 125x70x55mm Secondly, we describe an ultra-compact, eye-safe, solid-state laser rangefinder (LRF) with reduced size, weight and power consumption compared to existing products. The LRF measures 100x55x34mm, weighs 200g, and can range to greater than 10km with a single laser shot and at a rep rate of 1Hz. This also leverages off advances in laser pump diodes, but also utilises low cost, high reliability, packaging technology commonly found in the telecoms sector. As is common in the D&S sector, the products are designed to work in extreme environments, such as wide temperature range (-40 to +71 degrees C) and high levels of shock and vibration. These disruptive products enable nextgeneration laser sensors such as rangefinders, target designators and active illuminated imagers.
