Xolography is a volumetric 3D printing method utilizing dual-color photoinitiators to fabricate layer-free objects from photopolymer resins, ranging from millimeters to centimeters in size. It enables fast, continuous printing producing objects with smooth surfaces and free of internal interfaces immediately after printing and postcuring. Xolography has the potential to revolutionize prototyping and fabrication of optical elements by allowing their rapid additive manufacturing without the need for additional surface treatment. © 2024 SPIE.

Spectral investigations in the UV-VIS range of selected Al, Cu, and Fe alloys and composite materials were performed using LIBS technique. The investigated objects were typical rifle cartridges, mortars, rocket launchers and samples of different type steel, Cu and Al alloys, as well as composite materials of special chemical composition. Two Nd:YAG lasers were applied: a short 4 ns, 60 mJ Brio Quantel/BigSky laser (1064 nm) and a long pulse 200/400 (up to 1000) mu s (similar to 2/4 up to 10 J) laser (1064 nm) constructed at the Institute of Optoelectronics MUT. This spectrochemical analysis was possible for Al, Cu, and Fe alloys objects for both lasers, and in case of composites only if the samples were irradiated by short laser pulse since in the experiment with the long pulse, all composite materials spectra, in general, were very similar to each other - they imitated a grey/black body spectra. For metal alloys in experiments with a short laser pulse only atomic spectra were observed while for long microsecond laser pulses molecular transitions have been registered for Al alloys. Electron temperatures of plasma created on different materials for short and long laser pulses were found on the base of Boltzmann plots. Temperatures are clearly higher for plasmas generated with a short laser pulse which results from much higher laser power density on the sample surface for short pulse and not from fluence which is 20-40 times larger for long pulse.

The thermal analysis (TA) of the wave propagation in the long-wave (LWIR) infrared bands, performed on metamaterials and nano-materials, is suitable for manufacturing a new type of infrared (IR) thermal vision camouflage, useful for defence, military and security application and to evaluate the capability of new kind of materials to block night vision (NV) thermal sighting capabilities as new countermeasure technology. This is mainly generated by the very detailed signature characterization database, available in most automatic vision systems that are able to detect targets by the IR spectral signature provided by the IR sensor. These metamaterials, called photonics band gap devices (PBG) or more in general photonic crystal (PhC), works on IR photons providing absorbing, transmission and reflecting bands. All the optical properties are function of the specific nano design tuned in the thermal wavelength.

Natural macromolecules are very promising row materials to be used in modern technology including security and defense. They are abundant in nature, easy to extract and possess biocompatibility and biodegradability properties. These materials can be modified throughout chemical or physical processes, and can be doped with lithium and rare earth salts, ionic liquids, organic and inorganic acids. In this communication samples of DNA and modified DNA were doped with Prussian Blue (PB), poly(ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), europium and erbium triflate and organic dyes such as Nile Blue (NB), Disperse Red 1 (DR1) and Disperse Orange 3 (DO3). The colored or colorless membranes were characterized by electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements, and they were applied in electrochromic devices (ECDs) and dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC). ECDs change the color under applied potential, so they can modulate the intensity of transmitted light of 15 to 35%. As the electrochromic materials, WO3 or Prussian blue (PB), are usually blue colored, the color change is from transparent to blue. DNA, and the complexes: DNA-CTMA, DNA-DODA and DNA-PEDOT: PSS were also investigated as either hole carrier material (HTM) or polymer electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The DNA-based samples as HTM in small DSSCs revealed a solar energy conversion efficiency of 0.56%. Polymer electrolytes of DNA-CTMA and DNA-DODA, both with 10 wt% of LiI/I-2, applied in small DSSC, exhibited the efficiencies of 0.18 and 0.66%, respectively. The obtained results show that natural macromolecules-based membranes are not only environmentally friendly but are also promising materials to be investigated for several electrochemical devices. However, to obtain better performances more research is still needed.

This paper presents the optical and acoustic characterization of an additively printed transparent polymer. Digital light processing DLP technic is used for printing transparent polymer when the acoustic and optical transmission were measured by ultrasonic transducers and UV spectroscopy. The 3D acoustic characterization of the polymer has shown slight anisotropic behavior with a longitudinal and shear velocities of 2488 m/s and 1133 m/s respectively. On the other hand, an anisotropic optical transmission and reflection have been shown. The obtained results are interesting in the development of acoustical and optical devices. © 2024 SPIE.

The detection of materials through containers is a vital capability for security screening applications at high risk locations, such as airports and checkpoints. Current detection procedures require suspect containers to be opened and the contents sampled, which is laborious and potentially hazardous to the operator. The capability to detect through-barrier would overcome these issues. Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) is an innovative spectroscopic technique that avoids fluorescence and Raman scatter from containers, which can mask the Raman signature from the sample This novel approach enables non-invasive detection of hazardous and benign materials through a wider range of container materials than is possible using conventional Raman spectroscopy. SORS spectra were acquired from explosive compounds and benign materials within a range of coloured glass and plastic containers. The SORS spectra were compared to the reference Raman signatures of the materials studied. Two data analysis methods were then applied to the resultant data to investigate the ability of SORS to detect the target materials through the barriers tested. Furthermore, the potential for reduction of sample fluorescence was investigated by using longer excitation wavelength (1064 nm) than is typically used in commercially available Raman instruments that use silicon detector technology. For some fluorescent samples, Raman spectral features that were masked by fluorescence at 785 nm were revealed at 1064 nm.

In this work we describe the synthesis of a new ephedrine derivative with a carbon linker featuring an amino reactive group, and its conjugation to the glutamine binding protein (GlnBP) from E. coli as a carrier protein for the production of polyclonal antibodies in rabbits against ephedrine. Proof-of-principle results that an efficient SPR-based indirect competitive immunoassay for the detection and quantification of ephedrine are presented. The detection limit of this assay was found to be about 33ng/ml.
