In this paper, we propose ways to study the optical limiting behavior of dissolved nanoparticles. We want to present two different approaches. First, we identify the key properties responsible for the critical fluence threshold using a principal component analysis. For metallic nanoparticles, we found that the real part of the complex dielectric function must have a negative value as low as possible, while the imaginary part must be close to zero. Additionally, the solvent should have a low refractive index as well as a low absorption. Furthermore, nonlinear scattering seems to be an important limiting mechanism for nanoparticle limiters. Here, we present a thermal finite element model to predict the temporal evolution of the temperature profile in the nanoparticles and their vicinity. The temperature profile leads to vapor bubbles around the nanoparticles and Mie theory is used to calculate the induced scattering. We demonstrate the functionality of the model by simulating an Au-nanoparticle in an ethanol solution.

We propose a new approach, based on optical atomic magnetometers and magnetic induction tomography (MIT), for remote and non-invasive detection of conductive targets. Atomic magnetometers overcome the main limitations of conventional MIT instrumentation, in particular their poor low-frequency sensitivity, their large size and their limited scalability. Moreover, atomic magnetometers have been proven to reach extremely high sensitivities, with an improvement of up to 7 orders of magnitude in the 50 MHz to DC band, with respect to a standard pick-up coil of the same size. In the present scheme, an oscillating magnetic field induces eddy currents in a conductive target and laser-pumped atomic magnetometers, either stand-alone or in an array, detect the response of the objects. A phase-sensitive detection scheme rejects the background, allowing remote detection of the secondary field and, thus, mapping of objects, hidden in cargos, underwater or underground. The potential for extreme sensitivity, miniaturization, dynamic range and array operation paves the way to a new generation of non-invasive, active detectors for surveillance, as well as for real-time cargo screening.

The thermal (emitted) infrared frequency bands, typically from 20-40 THz and 60-100 THz, are best known for applications in thermography, such as target acquisition, surveillance, night vision, and remote sensing. This unregulated part of the spectral range offers opportunities for the development of short-range secure communications. The `THz Torch' concept was recently demonstrated by the authors. This technology fundamentally exploits engineered blackbody radiation, by partitioning thermally-generated spectral noise power into pre-defined frequency channels. The energy in each channel is then independently pulse-modulated, transmitted and detected, creating a robust form of short-range secure communications in the far/mid infrared. In this paper, recent progress for the 'THz Torch' technology will be presented;the physical level integrity for multichannel proof-of-concept working demonstrators will be evaluated. By exploring a diverse range of methods, significant enhancements to both data rate and distance can be expected. Our thermodynamics-based approach represents a new paradigm in the sense that 19th century physics can be exploited with 20th century multiplexing concepts for low-cost 21st century ubiquitous security and defence applications in the thermal infrared range.

Direct printing technique has become indispensable in flexible electronics and low cost sensor applications. It has transformed into an enabling technology for many flexible devices. However, it is not very well explored for printing optical materials. In this work, a micro-dispense printer for printing polymeric optical waveguides was custom-built. It was employed to develop a simple method to couple light into printed optical interconnects. It was also used to apply a voltage bias during printing and drying of electro-optic polymer (SEO110) to pole the SEO110 in-situ with the goal of eliminating the need for traditional high temperature contact poling. With this in-situ poling method, electro-optic effect in SEO110 was demonstrated.

The optical limiting behaviour of silver nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes is investigated and compared to the optical limiting performances of conventional carbon black suspension. The optical limiting behaviour is characterized by means of nonlinear transmittance and scattered intensity measurements when submitted to a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at the fundamental or the second harmonic wavelength. We found that the optical limiting effect is strongly particle size dependent, the best performance achieved with the smaller particles. Moreover, it is shown that the surface plasmon resonance is not the main effect responsible for the nonlinear processes. Especially, the particle size and its implication in the backscattering performance is outlined. A stronger backscattered radiation is observed for the 60 nm sized silver particles in comparison with the 580 nm large ones. Alternatively, a stronger scattering in the forward hemisphere is subsequent to nanoparticles whose sizes are significantly greater.

With the continuing threat to aviation security from homemade explosive devices, the restrictions on taking a volume of liquid greater than 100 ml onto an aircraft remain in place. From January 2014, these restrictions will gradually be reduced via a phased implementation of technological screening of Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs). Raman spectroscopy offers a highly sensitive, and specific, technique for the detection and identification of chemicals. Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS), in particular, offers significant advantages over conventional Raman spectroscopy for detecting and recognizing contents within optically challenging (Raman active) containers. Containers vary enormously in their composition;glass type, plastic type, thickness, reflectance, and pigmentation are all variable and cause an infinite range of absorbances, fluorescence backgrounds, Rayleigh backscattered laser light, and container Raman bands. In this paper we show that the data processing chain for Cobalt Light systems' INSIGHT100 bottlescanner is robust to such variability. We discuss issues of model selection for the detection stage and demonstrate an overall detection rate across a wide range of threats and containers of 97% with an associated false alarm rate of 0.1% or lower.

In this study, we propose an all-optical sensor based on consideration the nonlinear effects on modal propagation and output intensity based on ultra-compact nonlinear multimode interference (NLMMI) coupler. The sensor can be tuned to highest sensitivity in the wavelength and refractive index ranges sufficient to detect water-soluble chemical, air-pollutions, and heart operation. The results indicate high output sensitivity to input wavelength. This sensitivity guides us to propose a wave sensor both transverse and longitudinal waves such as acoustic and light wave, when an external wave interacts with input waveguide. For instance, this sensor can be implemented by long input that inserted in the land, then any wave could detected from earth. The visible changes of intensity at output facet in various surrounding layer refractive index show the high sensitivity to the refractive index of surrounding layer that is foundation of introducing a sensor. Also, the results show the high distinguished changes on modal expansion and output throat distribution in various refractive indices of surrounding layer.

The work reported outlines the synthesis, film formation and application of NIR-absorbing metal dithiolene and metal diimine molecules suitable for film formation with varying ligands and central metals. Formation of an electroactive film on conducting glass or mesoporous TiO2 support can be achieved through electropolymerisation, electrodeposition, spin/drop coating or chemical attachment. In this context, we will outline the synthesis, characterisation and properties of a new family of NIR-absorbing aromatic metal diimine complexes. These complexes are shown to give rise to planar, delocalised structures with small HOMO-LUMO gaps, through the use of extended non-innocent ligands o-semibenzoquinonediimines. Herein we report the synthesis of a series of metal diimine complexes, modified to extend the electronic conjugation and shift the intense low-energy absorption from the visible to the NIR region. This study extends the range of available NIR absorping metal-complex chromophores and opens up new possibilities for wavelength tuning and application.

The goal of this work is to study the optical limiting properties of gold nanoparticles colloidal suspensions in organic solvent and to make a comparison with nanoparticles embedded in a polymeric matrix. The idea is to realize a solid state protection device based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) against cw lasers. This is desirable because polymers are usually cheap, flexible, and mechanically robust and temporally stable. In particular we use polycarbonate, a common polymer used to produce high quality optical lenses with superior mechanical properties. Thermally induced nonlinear optical properties of AuNPs, characterized by a surface plasmon resonance with a peak at about 520 nm where the human eye is most sensitive, have been reported for solution samples. The z-scan analysis performed on AuNPs in organic solvent confirms the presence of a nonlinear absorption coefficient comparable with literature for water colloids. We have investigated the optical limiting behavior of AuNPs doped thin film under cw illumination at 488 nm and their temporal response. A critical parameter in assessing the effectiveness of the optical limiting action is the time response of the material at varying input powers. It gives us information on the transmitted irradiance in a 300 milliseconds time interval, corresponding to the blinking time of the human eye, therefore on the total fluence reaching the retina. Finally we also report a characterization of the optical limiting action of film at 488, 514 and 647 nm.

Polymers containing azobenzene dyes or azobenzene lateral groups are of special interest for their application as optically active media, particularly, as polarization sensitive media for such applications: optical data storage, surface nanostructuration, photoswitching, alignment of liquid crystals, active optical elements etc. An intensive research was carried out previous years on synthesizis and investigation of the second order nonlinear optical response of azobenzene/polymer systems. The desirable properties of these materials are attributed to the highly efficient photoinduced trans-cis and vice versa isomerization of azobenzene moieties. This transformation is connected with the volume change of molecules, followed by an increase of their rotational mobility. The trans-cis izomerization process is exploited also in all optical poling of polymers and plays an important role in optical depoling. Generally these phenomena are induced by light with frequencies corresponding to one-photon absorption. They are possible also by multiphoton absorptions. In this paper we report the synthesis of side chain methacrylic polymers functionalized with azobenzene chromophores. A reversible change of thin film absorption is observed when illuminating it with monochromatic, linearly polarized light under the applied external DC field. The amount of change depends on the angle between the light polarization and the DC electric field direction.
