Viral infections are of special threat because they can induce severe courses of disease but only few medical treatments are available. Because of socio-economic and climate changes, increased worldwide mobility and population growth, the risk of newly occurring and quickly spreading viral pathogens has increased. A diagnosis of these diseases at an early stage is essential for a quick risk assessment and a proper health management as well as patient's treatment in an optimal way. Currently, the diagnosis of such diseases is based on time consuming and costly detection methods that can only be performed by specially trained personnel in laboratories at specific security levels. Aim of the project VIROSENS is the development of a biosensor platform that can specifically detect virus particles as well as virus-specific antibodies out of biological matrices like blood, serum, plasma and other body fluids. For this purpose, a disposable cartridge for such antibody- and virus-arrays is designed and developed within the project. The optical detection of viruses is performed with a portable device that will be benchmarked and evaluated concerning currently used standard detection methods in terms of its analytical performance. Within this project, a novel combination of serological tests and direct detection of virus particles will be developed, which will provide faster and more reliable results than presently available and used test systems.

The paper describes the use of fiber-optic interferometer as a security sensor, which was built in a prototype of a plastic window. Its primary function is detecting the vibration and acoustic impulses, which affect the transparent glass part of the window prototype. The presented results are focused on the analysis of the frequency characteristic of the created prototype to verify of the sensitivity of the sensor. The knowledge of the frequency characteristic of the proposed window sensor is necessary due to the correct interpretation of the measured data. The interferometer is a Mach-Zehnder type and operates with an optical fibers G.652.D. As a radiation source, we used DFB laser with the wavelength of 1550 nm. The input optical power is 1 mW. optical signal was detected by PbSe photodetector. The generator of the harmonic signal with fixed amplitude of the signal and digital sound level meter were used to the analysis of the frequency characteristic of the prototype. The analyzed frequency spectrum was in a range of 35 Hz to 8 kHz. The paper showed that this system is suitable for measurements of vibration impulses and acoustic waves in the audible range from 40 Hz up to 3 kHz.

In this paper we report a series of side-chain polymers bearing a push-pull azo-moiety, from pseudo-stylbene type molecules. The azobenzene monomer is chemically incorporated through radical copolymerization in: poly(methacrylate), poly(styrene);and poly(oxazoline) matrices. The different classes of azo-polymers are discussed comparatively to one another from the point of view of: solubility, molecular weights, glass transition temperatures & thermal stability, chromophore contents, and as well as from the point of view of their spectral features.

The article describes a method for fabrication of polymer optical micro-lenses using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) at the end of optical fibers. PDMS is an optically clear substance having a refractive index very similar to the optical fibers. Therefore it is an interesting material for optical purposes. PDMS is characterized by resistance to electromagnetic interference (EMI), enabling the use in electromagnetically noisy environments. These lenses could be used for example for the security applications. For the manufacture of the micro-lenses is used Sylgard silicone elastomer 184. When applied to the end of conventional optical fiber is cured by treatment at 100 degrees C +/- 5 degrees C. Authors performed a series of experimental measurements. The optical characteristics of the treated fibers compared with conventional fibers without micro- lenses. The fibers provided with optical lenses made of PDMS may be used for security applications, in the visible light communication (VLC) or as a microprobe.

Authors of this article focused on the analysis of the use of distributed fiber-optic technology for security monitoring of structural loads of road and motorway tunnels. Authors focused on measurements of deformation utilizing Brillouin Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR). The principle is based on the measurement of the stimulated Brillouin scattering. The article describes the load of tunnel based on the real measurements made during the construction of the motorway tunnel in the Slovakia Republic in a time horizon of several months. Experiments were carried out with standard optical telecommunication cable with water-absorbing aramid yarns and jacketing of diameter 4.2 mm. The outcome of this article is an introductory analysis the use of fiber-optic technology for security monitoring of structural loads for road and motorway tunnels.

Azobenzene elastomers due to their ability to change the shape under light irradiation have a fascinating potential for technical applications serving as artificial muscles, sensors, microrobots, actuators, etc. The present study deals with the effects of the orientation liquid-crystalline (LC) interactions between the chromophores on the light-induced deformation of azobenzene elastomers. The orientation LC-interactions are taken into account in the framework of the mean-field approximation. Interaction of the chromophores with the light is described by means of an orientation potential which leads to preferable orientation of chromophores perpendicular to the light polarization direction. The statistics of network strands is described in the framework of the Gaussian approach. We consider photo-mechanical properties of azobenzene elastomers which are in the LC nematic state even at the absence of the light. It is shown that the light is able to induce a phase transition form the uniaxial to biaxial state with preferable orientation of chromophores perpendicular to the light polarization direction. The photomechanical behaviour is very sensitive to the chemical structure of network strands: an azobenzene elastomers can elongate (contract) along the polarization direction of the light, if the chromophores are oriented preferably perpendicular (parallel) to the backbones of network strands.

This paper presents a novel approach to detect persons in video by combining optical flow based motion analysis and silhouette based recognition. A new fast optical flow computation method is described, and its application in a motion based analysis framework unifying human tracking and detection is outlined. Our optical flow algorithm represents optical flow by grid based motion vectors, which are computed very efficiently and robustly applying template matching. We model the motion patterns of the tracked human and non-human objects by the positions, velocities, motion magnitudes, and motion directions of their optical flow vectors, and build a random forest on these features. For recognition, the random forest computes a normalized score measuring the similarity of a track to a human track. Using edge detection on a motion image for each motion blob its silhouette is computed. Recognition scores are computed, which measure the similarity of the silhouettes with human silhouettes. The optical flow classifier and the silhouette classifier are used as a combined classifier. We analyze the ROC curve to set different decision thresholds on the recognition score for different scenarios. The experiments on the VIRAT test set demonstrate that for human detection the combination of the optical flow based motion method with one based on human silhouette analysis, obtains superior results, compared to the constituent methods.

A bottle scanner to detect liquid explosive has been developed using technologies of near infrared. Its detection rate of liquid explosive is quite high and its false alarm rate of safe liquids quite low. It uses a light source with wide spectrum such as a halogen lamp. Recently a variety of LEDs have been developed and some of them have near infrared spectrum. Here a near infrared LED is tested as a light source of the liquid explosive detector. Three infrared LEDs that have a main peak of spectrum at 901nm, 936nm, and 1028 nm have been used as a light source to scan liquids. Spectrum widths of these LEDs are quite narrow typically less than 100 nm. Ten typical liquids have been evaluated by these LEDs and the correlation coefficients of a spectrum by an LED and a tungsten lamp were more than 0.98. This experiment shows that the infrared LED can be used as a light source for the liquid scanner. An LED has some merits, such as long life of more than some ten thousand hours and small consumption electric power of less than 0.2 W. When the LED is used as a light source for the liquid scanner, it is also more compact and handy.

Proactive detection of incidents is required to decrease the cost of security incidents. This paper focusses on the automatic early detection of suspicious behavior of pickpockets with track-based features in a crowded shopping mall. Our method consists of several steps: pedestrian tracking, feature computation and pickpocket recognition. This is challenging because the environment is crowded, people move freely through areas which cannot be covered by a single camera, because the actual snatch is a subtle action, and because collaboration is complex social behavior. We carried out an experiment with more than 20 validated pickpocket incidents. We used a top-down approach to translate expert knowledge in features and rules, and a bottom-up approach to learn discriminating patterns with a classifier. The classifier was used to separate the pickpockets from normal passers-by who are shopping in the mall. We performed a cross validation to train and evaluate our system. In this paper, we describe our method, identify the most valuable features, and analyze the results that were obtained in the experiment. We estimate the quality of these features and the performance of automatic detection of (collaborating) pickpockets. The results show that many of the pickpockets can be detected at a low false alarm rate.

This paper, propose a novel approach to access all optical switching performance usable in telecommunications and photonic signal processing circuits by one continuous MMI coupler under a nonlinear regime to achieve the switching at smallest length of Multimode interference waveguide. In past methods, there have been MMI switch with length about a few millimeters, but in this paper an MMI is presented for switching purposes with a length less than 100 mu m. In this approach, the wave propagation is studied base on MPA method. The nonlinear wave equation in presence of Kerr nonlinear effect is solved as a set of multiple coupled nonlinear equations, so each equations are related to one of guided modes in Multimode waveguide. With ability of calculating the electric field at the outputs channels, we are able to optimize the Multimode waveguide in terms of length. switching is performable with a variation of input intensity or electric field, thus the output fields have been measured with 10(5) different amounts of input electric fields for each lengths which are switching candidates, then switching operation is appeared in special length with its dependence input electric fields that each electric fields relate to switch the light to bar or cross outputs, this switch is the outstanding proposal for new all optical digital signal processing due to the compact size.
