Point spread function (PSF) models are critical to Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data analysis. Astronomers unfamiliar with optical simulation techniques need access to PSF models that properly match the conditions of their observations, so any HST modeling software needs to be both easy-to-use and have detailed information on the telescope and instruments. The Tiny Tim PSF simulation software package has been the standard HST modeling software since its release in early 1992. We discuss the evolution of Tiny Tim over the years as new instruments and optical properties have been incorporated. We also demonstrate how Tiny Tim PSF models have been used for HST data analysis. Grating-coupling techniques are widely used in the silicon photonics platform. However, the alignment between fiber and chip is a significant issue to be solved. To ease alignment tolerances and simplify photonic packaging for grating-based coupling, we proposed and designed a novel waveguiding interconnect. In this paper, a 3D model of the grating-coupler device is developed and tested using BPM-Matlab and CST Studio Suite software package. Diffracted and waveguided light characteristics are studied in detail, and its coupling efficiency and mode overlapping efficiency are examined. A beneficial waveguiding and mode reshaping ability is observed, therefore validating the demonstrated design method.

The major requirement for hot- and chill-plate designs is that they provide repeatable and uniform process conditions thereby assuring consistent photoresist quality. A collection of feature-based thermal models has been developed to predict temperature-time histories considering plate construction features including chuck heating/cooling methods, sensor placement with a PID control algorithm, and effects due to vacuum grooves, access holes, support pins and edge-gap. These models can be used by designers and process technologists to assess new approaches, optimize current design and set performance specifications.

The coupling length and coupling ratio is defined as input and output respectively, which are used to train the neural network model. Radial base function neural network model is built for optical fiber direction coupler, which is in turn simulated and designed through the model. This method has the advantages of speediness, accuracy and reliability, which are identified by the design example. It can be used to design the other kind of optical passive device. This way is a novel design approach, which can save the cost of device design, decrease period of design and has a good prospect of application.

optical design usually concentrates on local ray slopes, leaving local wavefront curvatures transformation as a side issue. In this presentation we develop a generalized ray tracing method for diffractive and refractive surfaces based on calculation of local wavefront curvatures. We showed that a non-paraxial wavefront transformation still can locally be described by the thin optical element model and developed relevant generalization of the Coddington equations. Ray tracing and diffraction through sequentially cascaded smooth optical surfaces with nonsymmetrical diffractive phase functions, can now be approached with nearly the same simplicity as customary in paraxial optics of thin lenses and Fourier optics. Relations between diffractive polynomial and fabricated microrelief profile are derived for scalar and resonance domain diffractive optics.

The performance predictions and optimization of blazed diffraction gratings are key issues for their application in hybrid optical systems, both in the case of imaging and analyzing systems. Scalar and vectorial theories are often used for a first performance estimation whenever applicable. However, in the intermediate structure regime, characterized by a grating period within the transition from the validity of the scalar to the fully electromagnetic theory, rigorous numerical simulations are inevitable for accurate modeling of blaze structures with sawtooth-shaped profiles. A variety of electromagnetic algorithms exists to determine the diffraction efficiency, such as integral equation methods, finite element methods or rigorous coupled-wave analyses. An effect known as shadowing occurs and has a significant influence on the diffraction efficiency of the blazed grating. A simple but accurate model describing the shadowing phenomena would be of enormous practical importance for the optical design of hybrid systems. Commonly, dielectric transmission gratings are regarded, when the efficiency behavior due to shadowing is discussed. We succeeded in filling the modeling gap in the intermediate structure regime and have derived a rigorous-based semi-analytical model for dielectric gratings. We are able to extend this model to the case of metallic reflection gratings. For both types of gratings, we find that the blaze efficiency obeys a linear dependence on the ratio of blaze wavelength to grating period, which dominates the performance in the first diffraction order. We define the linear coefficient of shadowing strength and discuss its dependence on the material properties.

A method for measuring imaging system MTF is presented that is compatible with modeling predictions as implemented in the Army's FLIR90/92 static performance model. The method uses commonly available commercial test equipment and personal computers and is effective for measuring scanning and staring array imaging systems in any imaging orientation. Testing accuracy is addressed, and simulation results are presented. Actual test data is also shown and compared with model predictions showing good agreement.

Use of best-in-class tools including OPNET, Satellite Tool Kit (STK), Popkin System Architect and their well known XML-friendly definitions, such as OPNET Modeler's Data Type Description (DTD), or socket-based data transfer modules, such as STK/Connect, enable the sharing of data between applications for more rapid development of end-to-end system architectures and a more complete system design. By sharing the results of and integrating best-in-class tools we are able to (1) promote sharing of data, (2) enhance the fidelity of our results and (3) allow network and application performance to be viewed in the context of the entire enterprise and its processes.

The reflected signature of an optical fiber Bragg grating is analyzed using the transfer function method. This approach is capable to cast all relevant quantities into proper places and provides a better physical understanding. The relationship between reflected signal, number of periods, index of refraction, and reflected wave phase is elucidated. The condition for which the maximum reflectivity is achieved is fully examined. We also have derived an expression to predict the reflectivity minima accurately when the reflected wave is detuned. Furthermore, using the segmented potential approach, this model can handle arbitrary index of refraction profiles and compare the strength of optical reflectivity of different profiles. The condition of a non-uniform grating is also addressed.

A concurrent engineering approach to the design and analysis of a space-borne Electro-optical (EO) sensor is presented. A detailed design of an infrared telescope payload is developed by an interdisciplinary team of mechanical, structural, thermal, and optical engineers using a Simulation Driven Engineering (SDE) software environment. The telescope payload design is also integrated with a conceptual level design of the space segment of a mission that incorporates the payload. The flow of the concurrent design process is described, and design outputs are provided.
