This paper introduces a new type of drop-in technique used to center passively and accurately lenses in optical mounts. This novel lens mounting method is called edge contact mounting and uses the edge at the intersection of the cylindrical and optical surface of the lens as the mounting interface. By providing a spherical mounting seat for the lens on a simple standard threaded ring, it is possible to center accurately lenses of different geometries, diameters and radius of curvatures. The method allows to relax some manufacturing tolerances compared to rim contact drop-in and is not subject to a minimum clamping angle as for the surface contact mounting. This innovative lens mounting method allows to extend the centering accuracy offered by passive lens centering methods to a next level without compromise on cost and complexity.

optical waveguide devices typically have dimensions transverse to the main propagation direction on the order of a fraction of a millimeter and therefore, cannot be modeled by ray or beam tracing techniques. In this small domain, numerical solutions of the fundamental field equations are usually employed. Two such implicit FD-BPM (Finite-Difference Beam Propagation Method) techniques have been integrated into a general optical engineering code: a full vector paraxial and scalar non-paraxial. Along with a more rigorous FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) calculation, their relative accuracies and efficiencies are compared on the practical 3D problem of coupling an optical system's focused spot into a single-mode fiber using a tapered mode converter. In all but the most extreme cases, the agreement between all three is better than expected especially considering that the runtimes vary drastically on a manycore desktop, with and without the help of a modern number-crunching GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).

We previously demonstrated the recording of transmission volume holographic optical elements (TVHOE) in our holographic wave front printer setup. The setup is based on two phase-only reflective spatial light modulators (SLMs), which provide the individual recording wave fronts in an adaptive fashion. Recently, we extended the optical system of our holographic wave front printer, so that reflection volume holographic optical elements (RVHOE) can be fabricated. To this end, the optical system, which guides the recording wave fronts from the SLMs to the holographic film, has been duplicated on either side of the film. The SLMs are located in opposite half-spaces relative to the holographic film. The film is placed in the confocal plane of the two optical systems for wave front relay, which face in opposite directions. Consequently, arbitrary recording wave fronts generated at the SLMs are superimposed in the holographic film and produce a reflection hologram structure. Adjacently recording many sub-holograms allows for fabrication of large RVHOEs. In this publication, we report on the working principle of our holographic wave front printing approach. We present our wave front printer laboratory setup along with insights on setup alignment strategies. We demonstrate the functionality of our setup;we successfully produced holographic micro-mirror arrays with short focal length in an off-axis configuration of excellent optical quality.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center (GRC) is developing a low cost, scalable, photon-counting receiver prototype for space-to-ground optical communications links. The receiver is being tested in a test bed that emulates photon-starved space-to-ground optical communication links. The receiver uses an array of single-pixel fiber-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. The receiver is designed to receive the high photon efficiency serially concatenated pulse position modulation (SCPPM) waveform specified in the Consultative Committee for Space Data systems (CCSDS) optical Communications Coding and Synchronization Blue Book Standard. The optical receiver consists of an array of single-pixel superconducting nanowire detectors, analog phase shifters for channel alignment, digitizers for each detector channel, and digital processing of the received signal. An overview of the test bed and arrayed receiver system is given. Simulation and system characterization results are presented. The data rate increase of using a four-channel arrayed detector system over using one single pixel nanowire detector is characterized. Results indicate that a single-pixel detector is capable of receiving data at a rate of 40 Mbps and a four-channel arrayed detector system is capable of receiving data at a rate of 130 Mbps.

In this paper, we study the thermo-optical impact of a window on the imaging performance of electro-optical (EO) and infrared (IR) multi-sensors. For demonstration, high-temperature imaging experiment was performed with a broadband EO/IR window heated up to 650 degrees C and the EO/IR multi-cameras were used to capture a blackbody target radiation through the heated window. Both EO/IR cameras captured out-of-focus images as the window was heated at 400 degrees C or above. Image processing technique was performed to extract the thermo-optical spread patterns from impacted images. Results show the significant impact on EO/IR imaging performance as compared to the original unaffected images.

With the advancement of technology, miniature projector equipment has become the mainstream direction of the projection display industry. Designing an efficient and lightweight LED lighting system is the focus of the lighting part of the mini projection lighting system. This paper designs a miniature projection lighting system, which consists of LEDs, TIR lens, fly's-eye lens, relay lens and so on. Firstly, based on the theory of non-imaging optics, the mathematical formulas of the collimated small-angle refraction surface and the collimated large-angle reflection surface of the TIR lens are derived, and a program is calculated in the MATLAB to obtain a series of TIR lenses. Discrete points and the discrete points obtained in MATLAB are imported into the 3D modeling software SOLIDWORKS to obtain the 3D model of the TIR lens, and the 3D model is imported into LIGHTTOOLS for modeling and simulation. The simulation results show that the divergence angle of the light of the TIR lens is within 5 degrees, which meets the design requirements. Next, the theory of the fly's-eye lens is elaborated and the formula of the double-row compound eye lens is deduced in detail. Finally, based on the design of the TIR lens and the fly's-eye lens, the focal length of the relay lens is calculated. The relay lens is also designed in ZEMAX. In the process of designing the relay lens, the influence of the aberration of the imaging system on the image quality is considered. The spherical aberration, coma aberration, field curvature and other aberrations of the lens are optimized, and finally the relay lens conforming to the design is obtained in ZEMAX. Finally, the TIR lens, compound eye lens, and relay lens are imported into LIGHTTTOOLS for modeling and simulation. A rectangular light spot with a uniformity of more than 90% is obtained, and the lighting system is compact. which meets the design requirements.

We introduce the concept of stray-light entrance pupil (SL-EP), which can be seen as the analogous regarding stray-light of the entrance pupil in optical design. It takes the shape of the rays footprint which by entering the system undergo stray-light effects before ultimately reaching the detector, modulated by the relative area importance. This paper discusses the properties of the SL-EP and the way it can be computed. The SL-EP can be used to improve stray-light simulations, as it allows to improve significantly the simulation accuracy while limiting the ray-tracing time. For that, sources can be defined based on the SL-EP and non-uniform ray densities can even be used to reach even higher performances. Time reduction factor up to more than 20 times can be demonstrated on the design of the 3MI earth observation instrument. Furthermore, the SL-EP concept can be used to facilitate experimental characterization of spatial point source transmittance maps.

We developed an economical assembly for a silicon photonics resonator device including a device mount and lensed fiber holders for input and output fibers. The parts are fabricated by 3D printing technology using resin with digital light processing (DLP) technique and cured with UV light (405nm). The lensed fibers are aligned to the device waveguides using 6-axis aligner platform and their holders are affixed to the device mount by UV glue. Our in-house assembly module is able to firmly affix the fiber holders to the device mount and align the input and output lens fibers to the device spot size converter (SSC) of dimension 3.4 x 3.5 mu m(2). After alignment completion, the assembly can be detached from the aligner stage to be used in unstabilized benchtop measurement system. The benchtop measurement system for the silicon photonic sensor device consists of a tunable laser, a polarizer, an optical power meter, and a container housing the device assembly, peristalsis pump and control circuits that was developed inhouse for microfluidics control having flow rate in the level of nanoliter/minute. In addition, a software has been developed for the measurement of the device resonant wavelength and wavelength shift due to sensor activity. We have demonstrated that the silicon photonics resonator that has been mounted on our assembly in the above measurement system showed acceptable performance by comparing the results with those obtained by mounting the device on stabilized fiber alignment platform. Thus, the 3D printed assembly may be used for silicon photonics device mount in early portable sensor prototype development.

NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument was launched Dec. 5, 2018, and installed on the International Space Station 419 km from Earth. The GEDI is a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) instrument;measuring the time of flight of transmitted laser beams to the Earth and back to determine altitude for geospatial mapping of forest canopy heights. The need for very dense cross track sampling for slope measurements of canopy height is accomplished by using three individual laser transmitter systems, where each beam is split into two beams by a birefringent crystal. Furthermore, one transmitter is equipped with a diffractive optical element splitting the two beams into four, for a total of 8 beams. The beams are reflected off of the features and imaged by an 800 mm diameter Receiver Telescope Assembly, composed of a Ritchey-Chretien telescope, a refractive aft optics assembly and focal plane array which collects and focuses the light from the 8 probe beams into the 8 science fibers, each with a field of view on the Earth subtending 300 mu rad. The dense cross-track sampling mandated a custom designed dual-fiber interface. The science fibers had to be aligned to the nominal, projected laser spots. The alignment was highly dependent on optimization and co-positioning of the fibers pair-wise due to mechanical constraints. This paper presents the end-to-end alignment and metrology of the full optical system from transmitter elements through receiver telescope, aft-optics, focal plane and receiver fibers performed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. optical communication links, operating in low photon flux conditions, rely on an array of single photon counting detectors to receive the signal. Due to the reset time of these detectors, many separate detectors must be used to receive a continuous signal. Photon counting, channel combining, channel alignment, and digitization of the detected signal can be complex and expensive due to the parallel hardware required for each channel. This issue is compounded as the system scales to greater numbers of detectors due to the amount of hardware required and alignment requirements between each channel. The purpose of this research is to examine a photon counting and channel combining method which allows for photon detection channels to be summed into a single signal before digitization, eliminating the need for parallelized hardware. This reduction in parallel hardware has the potential to reduce the cost and complexity of the system. In this paper, a single layer fully connected neural network architecture is explored as a possible solution for the photon counting of summed photon detection channels. The signal to noise ratio of the combined signal was lower than that of the individual channels and was inversely proportional to the root of the number of channels being summed. The neural network signal processing implementation produced signal gain when the symbol phase remains constant. This is most likely due to the network exploiting the modulation structure of the signal and possibly offsets the losses incurred during analog summation.
