Drosophila Melanogaster is a sample of high biological interest that is being widely used as biological model, due to the relatively short life cycle, short genome and ease in culturing. In this work we present a microscope on chip capable of processing Drosophila embryos to obtain three dimensional fluorescent images at high throughput. This device, based on light sheet microscopy, uses a plane of light intercepting the sample channel to optically and non-invasively section the embryos while flowing. This permits to automatically acquire for each sample the stack of images necessary for the subsequent 3D reconstruction with no need of any manual sample positioning and alignment. The whole chip is fabricated in a glass substrate by femtosecond laser micromachining. The device has been optimized for the specific morphology of the sample. Indeed, the highly elliptical shape of the embryos (about 100 x 500 mu m(2)) might affect the image quality degrading both the vertical and the axial resolution of the system. To overcome this issue, we have first optimized the layout of the fluidic channel to precisely control the sample orientation by means of hydrodynamic forces. Thereafter, we have optimized the properties of the optical circuit, to realize two opposite light sheets impinging on the sample, perfectly overlapped, with a high signal to noise ratio. With these actions, we have been able to obtain high quality Drosophila reconstruction.

The performance of microlenses fabricated via femtosecond direct laser writing is insuperably limited with regards to image contrast within its all-transparent material system. Our proposed super-fine inkjet process for the realization of apertures and non-transparent hulls both shields stray light and adds additional optical design parameters, namely diameter, shape, and position of the aperture. A micropinhole camera, a high-contrast imaging microlens, and a telecentric system are demonstrated. Our method is most suitable for 3D-printed micro-optics due to its one-step integration and auto-adjustment of the aperture position and can be useful for highly precise integration of functional materials beyond mere non-transparency.

With the deterioration of battlefield environment, joint combat will become an important mode of operation in the future. In this paper, the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) is studied, the architecture framework design ideas and specific architecture design steps of DoDAF are given, the architecture views involved are *** paper presents a DoDAF-based modeling method for air-sea joint combat system architecture, which can better describe the operational tasks, information relations among constituent nodes and sub-systems of the complex integrated air-sea joint operation system. This method is often used in the early development stage of complex systems, and enhances consistency understanding between application personnel and system designers and developers.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument was designed, built, and tested in-house at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on December 5, 2018. GEDI is a multibeam waveform LiDAR (light detection and ranging) designed to measure the Earth's global tree height and canopy density using 8 laser beam ground tracks separated by roughly 600 meters. Given the ground coverage required and the 2 year mission duration, a unique optical design solution was developed. GEDI generates 8 ground sampling tracks from 3 transmitter systems viewed by a single receiver telescope, all while maximizing system optical efficiency and transmitter to receiver boresight alignment margin. The GEDI optical design, key optical components, and system level integration and testing are presented here. GEDI began 2 years of science operations in March 2019 and so far, it is meeting all of its key optical performance requirements and is returning outstanding science.

In this paper, we demonstrate a compact Silicon photonics-based on-chip integrated interference vibrometer. Unlike conventional readout methods, the demonstrated system is alignment-free and offers multiplex sensing. The intensity that is modulated by the cantilever motion by a photodetector. We present the static and dynamic response of the cantilever by electrostatic excitation validated using ac commercial Laser-Doppler-Vibrometer. We also present a detailed simulation, optimisation and sensitivity analysis of the proposed on-chip vibrometer. Furthermore, the tunability of the sensor to achieve maximum sensitivity is demonstrated.

The cost and complexity of future interconnects create a significant opportunity for emerging photonic technologies such as fibers and switches. These technologies should be evaluated at the system level in order to determine the most efficient way they can be used, as well as provide feedback to photonic developers to better optimize for high-level impact. In this paper, we argue for the need for a systematic methodology to extract system-level models for any emerging photonic component. We then outline our past experience with extracting architectural-level metrics from device demonstrations and conducting architectural-level evaluations. Finally, we discuss qualities for a desirable solution to this problem that requires cross-community collaboration.

In recent years, extensive investigations have been made on high-speed visible light communication (VLC) for indoor applications including data centres. For high-speed VLC systems, precise alignment between the VLC transceivers is usually required to establish an optical link with less optical loss. In this paper, an effective scheme of auto-alignment and tracking of transceivers is proposed for practical VLC systems with a high-speed camera for location of the target light source and a two-axis gimbal for initial auto-alignment between transceivers. To explore the feasibility of the proposed scheme, real-time dynamic 200 Mb/s carrierless amplitude-phase (CAP)-VLC transmission is experimentally demonstrated in >= 3 m VLC links with red light emitting diodes (LEDs) at an angular accuracy of <= 0.02 degrees (0.35 mrad), a tracking speed of <= 27 degrees/s and a latency of <= 21 ms. The proposed scheme can also be applied for coarse alignment in highspeed laser-based free space optical communication (FSO) systems with visible beacons. 10 Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) transmission is successfully demonstrated over a 1.8 m FSO link with the coarse alignment and the spatial light modulator (SLM)-based fine alignment. Experimental results indicate good flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme for an FSO system with high spatial efficiency and low cabling complexity in data centres.

The AIMS, a solar telescope with a primary mirror of 1m in diameter, is designed with an off-axis Gregorian optical system and an alt-az mounting structure. The image rotation of the AIMS will be produced both due to alt-az mounting and the movement of folding plane mirrors system during the monitoring of the sun. Therefore, a derotator is planned to correct and compensate the image rotation to make the terminal instruments of the AIMS work properly. The image rotation in astronomical telescopes consists of the object field rotation and the image field rotations. In this paper, the rotation of the object field for the AIMS is presented and calculated. The image field rotation due to the plane mirrors system with the movement of azimuth axis and altitude axis of the AIMS is theoretically determined by using the vector matrix method. The relationships between the image filed rotation and the variation of the azimuth and altitude of the telescope are discussed. This work may be very helpful to evaluate the deroation methods for the AIMS and will provide an important theoretical support for precision control of the derotator to eliminate the image rotation in real time.

In recent decades the advancement in the field of plasmonics has been crucial for the development of applications such as chemical detection, photothermal cancer therapy, and memory elements. In this work we present theoretical and experimental results focusing on the characterization of gold nanorods (AuNRs) coated with *** AuNRs constitute ideal nanoparticle-biomolecular hybrid system for study of photothermal heating effects. To start we synthesized AuNRs using a seed-mediated growth procedure. This synthesis employs a surfactant system using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for stability with the addition of silver ions for improved formation. Once synthesized the nanorods were coated with polyelectrolytes sodium poly (acrylic acid) (PAA), poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), and poly (sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) by a layer-by-layer absorption technique. Making use of the positive surface charge of CTAB-coated AuNRs, in this technique electrostatic absorption of an anionic polyelectrolyte and a cationic polyelectrolyte through charge reversal is enabled. The coated nanorods are characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and electron microscopy to control the effectiveness of each polyelectrolyte on coating the nanorods. In addition to characterizing these AuNRs experimentally we also calculate their optical properties (far-field and near-field) via electrodynamics simulations, using the finite-difference time-domain method.

An ongoing collaboration among four US Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories has demonstrated key technology prototypes and software modeling tools required for new high-coherent flux beamline optical systems. New free electron laser (FEL) and diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR) light sources demand wavefront preservation from source to sample to achieve and maintain optimal performance. Fine wavefront control was achieved using a novel, room-temperature cooled mirror system called REAL (resistive element adjustable length) that combines cooling with applied, spatially variable auxiliary heating. Single-grating shearing interferometry (also called Talbot interferometry) and Hartmann wavefront sensors were developed and used for optical characterization and alignment on several beamlines, across a range of photon energies. Demonstrations of non-invasive hard x-ray wavefront sensing were performed using a thin diamond single-crystal as a beamsplitter.
