In this paper, the position error modeling of the three-element Risley-prism beam scan system is established and the exact expressions of the beam pointing errors are derived by ray tracing based on the Snell's law. The impacts of the tilt error of three-element prisms and the tilt error of the bearing position on the beam pointing accuracy are graphically presented with analytical and numerical results. According to the given pointing accuracy requirements, the allowable limit values of assembly errors are calculated, which is of practical significance for improving the design level of three-element prisms. The analysis method in this paper is universal for the analysis of the assembly error of other cascade prisms.

A spectrometer that can capture two orthogonal polarization components of s light beam is demanded for polarization sensitive imaging system. Here, we describe the design and implementation of a high speed spectrometer for simultaneous capturing of two orthogonal polarization components, i.e. vertical and horizontal components, of light beam. The design consists of a polarization beam splitter, two polarization-maintain optical fibers, two collimators, a single line-scan camera, a focusing lens, and a reflection blaze grating. The alignment of two beam paths was designed to be symmetrically incident on the blaze side and reverse blaze side of reflection grating, respectively. The two diffracted beams were passed through the same focusing lens and focused on the single line-scan sensors of a CMOS camera. The two spectra of orthogonal polarization were imaged on 1000 pixels per spectrum. With the proposed setup, the amplitude and shape of the two detected spectra can be controlled by rotating the collimators. The technique for optical alignment of spectrometer will be presented and discussed. The two orthogonal polarization spectra can be simultaneously captured at a speed of 70,000 spectra per second. The high speed dual spectrometer can simultaneously detected two orthogonal polarizations, which is an important component for the development of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography. The performance of the spectrometer have been measured and analyzed.

Near-eye display users universally request larger fields of view for enhanced immersion, presence, and device utility. Unlike frame rate or device weight, field of view cannot be represented precisely as a single number. Quoting field of view as a diagonal, a carry-over from the display industry, could refer to either the monocular or stereo field of view and gives no indication of the field of view boundary shape. This work defines an unambiguous metric evaluation of field of view based on solid angle, accounting for eye relief, interpupillary distance, eye rotation, and device alignment. The approach allows optical system designers to identify weak points in the optics/display/rendering pipeline. To accompany modeling, a measurement scheme was developed to metrically compare field of view over various real-world user conditions. Best practices for visualizing and communicating field of view are also presented. This work reviews the methods used to increase field of view, with discussion of the monocular and binocular artifacts that arise in large field of view systems. The limitations and advantages of optical tiling, canting, and extreme distortion are described, using relevant examples in the commercial VR space. The fundamental tradeoffs between resolution, field of view, and optical quality over field are discussed, including a review of methods to maximize field of view without sacrificing on-axis resolution. Until display and optics technology can fully match the human visual system, the intermediate objective is to find the best experience match in field of view, resolution, and optical quality given existing hardware limitations. Qualitative assessments of the relative value of different regions of the human visual field will be provided.

The GMT active optics (AcO) control problem is unique because the primary and secondary mirrors are both segmented. This paper describes the AcO control algorithms and assesses their performance for the Natural Seeing observing modes of the GMT. In this case, there are wavefront sensors in four off-axis probes, which are used to control the position and rotation of each of the seven primary and seven secondary mirror segments, as well as the bending modes of the primary mirror. The segmentation of both mirrors leads to a number of unsensed modes (e.g., segment piston and a rotation of the segment around the telescope optical axis) and poorly sensed modes (e.g., M1 segment translations compensated with the corresponding M2 segment translation). Uncertainties in the location of the probes and guide star coordinates also lead to blind modes. In this paper, we first introduce the GMT optical design in the context of the AcO system. The modes of the telescope controlled by the AcO system, and their counterparts in the wavefront sensing space, are presented next, including field-dependent and blind modes. The control architecture is then outlined along with a description of the singular modes of the system. Finally, performance results are provided with respect to various error terms.

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) has developed since June 2014 an optical laboratory that comprises all the activities and facilities related to the research and development of new instruments in the following areas: telescope design, high dynamic and high resolution imaging systems and spectrographs. The facilities include ZEMAX and Solidwork software for design and simulation activities as well as an optical room with all the equipment required to develop optical setup with cutting-edge performance. The current projects include: i) the development of a focal reducer for the 2.3 m Thai National Telescope (TNT), ii) the development of the Evanescent Wave Coronagraph dedicated to the high contrast observations of star close environment and iii) the development of low resolution spectrographs for the Thai National Telescope and for the 0.7 m telescopes of NARIT regional observatories. In each project, our activities start from the instrument optical and mechanical design to the simulation of the performance, the development of the prototype and finally to the final system integration, alignment and tests. Most of the mechanical parts are manufactured by using the facilities of NARIT precision mechanical workshop that includes a 3-axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to machine the mechanical structures and a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) to verify the dimensions. In this paper, we give an overview of the optical laboratory activities and of the associated facilities. We also describe the objective of the current projects, present the specifications and the design of the instruments and establish the status of development and we present our future plans.

In this paper, the processing of optical system alignment was mainly studied, the processing method of optics on the primary and secondary mirrors, front correction lens group and behind correction lens group with high precision centering lathe and internal focusing telescope. Then using the height indicator complete the system alignment of the primary mirror, secondary mirror, front correction group and behind correction group. Finally, based on the zygo interferometer detect the wavefront information. Using this alignment program for catadioptric optical system, the wavefront aberration of optical system, focal length, modulation transfer function (MTF) and other technical indicators have reached the requirements.

A high-accuracy high-fidelity flight wavefront control (WFC) model is developed for detailed WFIRST-CGI raw contrast sensitivity analysis. Built upon features of recently testbed validated model, it is further refined to combine a full Fresnel propagation diffraction model for high accuracy contrast truth evaluation, and an economical compact model for WFC purposes. Extensive individual raw contrast error sensitivities are evaluated systematically, both as known imperfections and as unknown calibration errors, for two CGI modes: spectroscopy mode and wide field-of-view mode with shaped pupil coronagraph. More than 90 distinct error items were identified, including system aberrations, optical misalignment, component fabrication errors, telescope interface related errors, etc. The result forms the basis for raw contrast error budget flow down to a sub-system level, where detailed specifications needed to aid in component design and manufacturing, mechanical alignment and instrument integration, and verification and validation operations. Evaluations are automated, making it relatively easy for repeat runs of revised design or at new desired error quantity. Observations from the comprehensive analysis and top error sensitivities and contrast floor contributors are noted and discussed. Error budget flowdown process is also briefly described.

Low phase noise signal generated in a small structure is required for communication and high resolution imaging. Optoelectronic oscillators with their demonstrated low phase noise are popular due to the increasing demand of very clean local oscillator and clock signal sources. Forced techniques of self-injection locking phase locking (SILDPLL) applied on an OEO system reduces the phase noise and suppresses side mode observed in standard OEO with long delays. However, this novel optical feedback technique using self-ILPLL is also employed for phase noise reduction of free-running microwave oscillators. Phase noise reduction of 27 dB at 10 kHz offset has been demonstrated by applying this technique for a 10 GHz state of art DRO, achieving -137 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. A phase noise prediction of this feedback technique is also presented, which very closely corroborates with experimental results. Analysis of SILPLL using the modeling has shown that further phase noise reductions could be achieved, by reducing the residual phase noise of the long delay lines and microwave amplifiers. In addition, a frequency synthesizer working at K-band is demonstrated using electronically tuned narrowband RF filter in place of fixed narrowband frequency metallic cavity based filters. The synthesizer employs optical transversal filter cascaded with YIG filter to electronically fine and coarse tune the oscillation frequency, as a replacement for fixed frequency high Q metallic filter. Second harmonic generated frequency synthesized signals with close-in to carrier phase noise of -127 dBc/Hz phase noise at 10 kHz are reported by V-pi operation of a Mach-Zehnder (MZM) over 18 GHz to 22 GHz with frequency tuning step as small as 20 kHz/pm. A 19 '' rack mount system is also constructed and long term stability of 4.5 kHz over 60 min is measured at K-band, while a 3.5 kHz drift is measured for a tabletop realization. Designs for photonic devices on silicon relies on non-Manhattan features such as curves and a wide variety of angles. Reticle Enhancement Techniques (RET) that are commonly used for CMOS manufacturing now are applied to curvilinear data patterns for the same reasons of enhancing pattern fidelity. Common techniques for curvilinear data processing include Manhattanization, jog removal, and jog alignment. We propose a novel method of describing curvilinear shapes in terms of curves reconstructed between control points. Such representation of curvilinear shapes brings many benefits in terms of pattern description (improved fidelity, file compaction), correction and verification. For example, it allows smooth displacements during the design correction procedure for process effects. The conventional correction by biasing each fragment illustrates the curve-based biasing where only the control points have been moved and the corrected shape was then reconstructed by connecting the control points in their new positions by the new curves. This method results in faster computation because there are fewer locations to adjust geometry, easier convergence and intrinsic continuity between edges. It also affords significant reduction of the design file size. Besides processing curvilinear pattern data, verification is also required after any original pattern modifications. Mask Rule Checks (MRC) are considered as standard step in any design data preparation flows, but the conventional MRC algorithms are conceived for Manhattan designs and as such they often result in numerous false errors or even missing errors when applied to photonics or ILT (Inverse Lithography Technology) designs. In addition, MRC for photonic layouts require much more than basic width and space checking. We developed a verification technology compliant with curvilinear layouts.
