PILOT is a balloon-borne astronomy experiment designed to study the polarization of dust emission in the diffuse interstellar medium in our Galaxy at wavelengths 240 mu m with an angular resolution about two arcminutes. Pilot optics is composed an off-axis Gregorian type telescope and a refractive re-imager system. All optical elements, except the primary mirror, are in a cryostat cooled to 3K. We combined the optical, 3D dimensional measurement methods and thermo-elastic modeling to perform the optical alignment. The talk describes the system analysis, the alignment procedure, and finally the performances obtained during the first flight in September 2015.

The position of the projection lens in a lens mount needs to be fixed using bolts in the alignment process. The lens mount is need bolts to fix lens in correct position. The bolt joint stress causes the mount and lens to deform. The bolt's number increase can help the bolt joint force effect decline, thus this project is design 8 bolts to fixed mount. The weight of each projection lens is about 2.5 kg, and the total lens assembly weighs about 35 kg. Thus, the effect of the gravity force on the lens surface needs to be considered. The lens bolt joint and gravity force will introduce optical aberration to the wavefront error of the system. The optical aberrations include two parts: lens surface deformation and lens-stress optical Path Difference (OPD). This study applied the Finite Element Method (FEM) to calculate the lens surface deformation and lens stress distribution by the bolt joint and gravity force. The lens deformation in the optical axis direction can be fitted by a Zernike polynomial. The stress OPD is calculated using incident rays passing through the stress-affected glass parallel to the optical axis. The calculation results can be used to evaluate the effects of the bolt joint and gravity force on the projection lens assembly.

The alignment of thin-shell, segmented mirrors for Wolter-I telescopes frequently involves the use of a Hartmann test. In order to get optical throughput in the Hartmann test, the mirrors must first be coarsely aligned to one another and to the metrology system. In the past, the coarse alignment of these mirrors at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory has largely relied upon component machine tolerances and contact measurements with a coordinate measurement machine (CMM). This process takes time and does not produce reliable nor repeatable results. Thus, methods were developed to allow for the quick and reliable coarse alignment of thin-shell, segmented mirrors at their final locations in the mirror assembly. We present the coarse alignment system developed at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and its use in the alignment of thin-shell, segmented mirrors for the adjustable X-ray optics program.

A polymer-based flat, flexible and parallel optical interconnect has become an attractive approach for short-range data transfer. For such a device, a low cost fabrication technique is required for light couplers to redirect light from source to waveguides. Recently, we demonstrated a mask-less gray scale lithography process, which used a CMOS compatible polymer for a 45-degree mirror coupler. Polymer materials such as epoclad and AP2210B can be used to fabricate flexible substrates and waveguides, respectively. We propose an all-photopolymer lithography process to fabricate the flexible and parallel optical interconnect in conjunction with the mirror couplers. In the process, a buried polymer structure is used to precisely align the mirror coupler to waveguides, which make it possible to avoid an additional metallization process. However, the contrast of such buried fiducial mark is low since such the structure is a phase structure. As a result, it is not feasible to use the buried polymer structure as an alignment mark with conventional amplitude based imaging modalities. To increase the contrast of these buried alignment marks, we propose a feature specific alignment system for which the shape and depth of the buried alignment marks are optimized for phase-based imaging such as phase contrast and Schlieren imaging. Our results show that an optimized alignment mark provides a significant contrast enhancement while using a phase contrast imaging system compared to that of a conventional imaging system. In addition, we have fabricated an optimized alignment mark specifically for use with a Schlieren imaging system.

Four of the 192 beams of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) are currently being diverted into the Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) system to generate a sequence of short (1-50 picoseconds) 1053 nm laser pulses. When focused onto high Z wires in vacuum, these pulses create high energy x-ray pulses capable of penetrating the dense, imploding fusion fuel plasma during ignition scale experiments. The transmitted x-rays imaged with x-ray diagnostics can create movie radiographs that are expected to provide unprecedented insight into the implosion dynamics. The resulting images will serve as a diagnostic for tuning the experimental parameters towards successful fusion reactions. Beam delays introduced into the ARC pulses via independent, free-space optical trombones create the desired x-ray image sequence, or movie. However, these beam delays cause optical distortion of various alignment fiducials viewed by alignment sensors in the NIF and ARC beamlines. This work describes how the position of circular alignment fiducials is estimated in the presence of distortion.

Holographic optical elements (HOEs) play important role in realization of compact and cost effective systems. Use of HOE not only give above mentioned advantages but an HOE can also be used to design and develop unusual system configurations which may not be possible, at all, using the concepts of conventional optics. Present paper describes fabrication of an HOE which contains both, reference and object, beams required for recording an off-axis hologram of phase objects. Illumination of HOE with a collimated beam generates two spatially separated collimated beams which intersect each other in the hologram recording plane. This combined HOE reduces a large number of opto-mechanical components and alignment related issues, generally encountered in off-axis holography. Fabrication of HOE and recording of holograms of phase objects using the HOE is described and experimental results of reconstructed holograms are presented.

The simulation of optical systems with both, refractive and diffractive components is very challenging and can neither be solved by a classical ray tracing approach nor by a general rigorous Maxwell solver. That is why the concept of field tracing has been introduced which is a generalization of ray tracing: harmonic fields are traced through the optical system instead of ray bundles. This allows the smooth combination of different modeling techniques in different subdomains of the system called unified optical modeling. The techniques can be adapted locally to minimize the numerical effort whereas the accuracy is as high as needed. In this paper we apply field tracing techniques for the simulation of an eyepiece containing a diffractive lens for minimizing the lateral color. The results presented include higher diffraction orders appearing due to the grating-like structure of the diffractive lens.

Determination of Organic compound concentration in water - is an imperative key to the control of water quality since it provide important information on pollution control of water supply. This work propose an optical sensor system where the organic compound concentration in water is determined using LED light(280nm). The absorbance was quantified according to the high, low and fine concentration of organic compound by means of linear regression modeling.

As the implementation of parallel optics continues to evolve, development of a universal coupling interface between VCSEL/PD arrays and the corresponding photonic turn connector is necessary. A newly developed monolithic mechanical-optical interface efficiently couples optical transmit/receive arrays to the accompanying fiber optic connector. This paper describes the optical model behind the coupling interface and validates the model using empirical measurements. optical modeling will address how the interface is adaptable to the broad range of VCSEL/PD optical parameters from commercially available VCSEL hardware manufacturers;the optical model will illustrate coupling efficiencies versus launch specifications. Theoretical modeling will examine system sensitivity through Monte Carlo simulations and provide alignment tolerance requirements. Empirical results will be presented to validate the optical model predictions and subsequent system performance. Functionality will be demonstrated through optical loss and coupling efficiency measurements. system metrics will include characterizations such as eye diagram results and link loss measurements.

The Advance Radiographic Capability (ARC) at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is a laser system that employs up to four petawatt (PW) lasers to produce a sequence of short pulses that generate X-rays which backlight high-density inertial confinement fusion (ICF) targets. ARC is designed to produce multiple, sequential X-ray images by using up to eight back lighters. The images will be used to examine the compression and ignition of a cryogenic deuterium-tritium target with tens-of-picosecond temporal resolution during the critical phases of an ICF shot. Multi-frame, hard-X-ray radiography of imploding NIF capsules is a capability which is critical to the success of NIF's missions. As in the NIF system, ARC requires an optical alignment mask that can be inserted and removed as needed for precise positioning of the beam. Due to ARC's split beam design, inserting the nominal NIF main laser alignment mask in ARC produced a partial blockage of the mask pattern. Requirements for a new mask design were needed. In this paper we describe the ARC mask requirements, the resulting mask design pattern, and the image analysis algorithms used to detect and identify the beam and reference centers required for ARC alignment.
