We present a novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) system design that employs coherence revival-based heterodyning and polarization encoding to simultaneously image the ocular anterior segment and the retina. Coherence revival heterodyning allows for multiple depths within a sample to be simultaneously imaged and frequency encoded by carefully controlling the optical pathlength of each sample path. A polarization-encoded sample arm was used to direct orthogonal polarizations to the anterior segment and retina. This design is a significant step toward realizing whole-eye OCT, which would enable customized ray-traced modeling of patient eyes to improve refractive surgical interventions, as well as the elimination of optical artifacts in retinal OCT diagnostics. We demonstrated the feasibility of this system by acquiring images of the anterior segments and retinas of healthy human volunteers.

In the framework of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) Technological Developments aimed at the measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, a method to define and characterize focal surfaces of millimeter wave telescopes has been implemented in a software package named WaFER (Wave Front Error evaluatoR). The purpose of this tool is to rapidly optimize and characterize wide focal planes providing valuable information to study and optimize high performance telescope configurations. This method is based on the GRASP9 Multi-Reflector GTD for the computation of the weighted wave front error and the software output is the 3D focal surface as the region that minimizes this figure of merit, in terms of feed locations and orientations, for polarization measurements. In addition WaFER provides the main descriptive parameters of the main beams iteratively calculated with the GRASP9 Physical optics, using the information derived for the evaluated focal surface. The method has been applied at several telescope configurations and WaFER could be used to define the focal surface of any reflector antenna system that can be studied with GRASP9. It can be used to characterize the main beam descriptive parameters also in terms of polarization properties and straylight. Finally, an estimate of the computational time is reported for each computational step (focal surface evaluation, main beam simulations, polarization alignment). This work has been carried out in the framework of the ASI contract 1/038/09/0, with Thales Alenia Space as Prime Contractor.

Unique spectroscopic properties of isolated rare earth ions in solids offer optical linewidths rivaling those of trapped single atoms and enable a variety of recent applications. We design rare-earth-doped crystals, ceramics, and fibers with persistent or transient "spectral hole" recording properties for applications including high-bandwidth optical signal processing where light and our solids replace the high-bandwidth portion of the electronics;quantum cryptography and information science including the goal of storage and recall of single photons;and medical imaging technology for the 700-900 nm therapeutic window. Ease of optically manipulating rare-earth ions in solids enables capturing complex spectral information in 10(5) to 10(8) frequency bins. Combining spatial holography and spectral hole burning provides a capability for processing high-bandwidth RF and optical signals with sub-MHz spectral resolution and bandwidths of tens to hundreds of GHz for applications including range-Doppler radar and high bandwidth RF spectral analysis. Simply stated, one can think of these crystals as holographic recording media capable of distinguishing up to 10(8) different colors. Ultra-narrow spectral holes also serve as a vibration-insensitive sub-kHz frequency reference for laser frequency stabilization to a part in 10(13) over tens of milliseconds. The unusual properties and applications of spectral hole burning of rare earth ions in optical materials are reviewed. Experimental results on the promising Tm3+:LiNbO3 material system are presented and discussed for medical imaging applications. Finally, a new application of these materials as dynamic optical filters for laser noise suppression is discussed along with experimental demonstrations and theoretical modeling of the process.

The alignment and Phasing system (APS) is one of the key parts of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) active optics system, with the responsibility for evaluating and correcting the pre-adaptive optics wavefront delivered by the telescope. APS is a high complexity system comprising a multi-channel wavefront-sensing instrument that produces as many as 250,000 discrete measurements and control software that delivers commands to about 12,000 active optics system actuators. The APS software is designed to guide the instrument development and predict its performance via simulation and also ultimately to serve the physical instrument itself. The software is built around a modeling tool we have developed called TMTracer, which is tailored to the optical alignment of extremely large segmented telescopes. We will present the underlying philosophy of TMTracer, as well as its architecture and sample simulation results that demonstrate its capabilities.

optical design usually concentrates on local ray slopes, leaving local wavefront curvatures transformation as a side issue. In this presentation we develop a generalized ray tracing method for diffractive and refractive surfaces based on calculation of local wavefront curvatures. We showed that a non-paraxial wavefront transformation still can locally be described by the thin optical element model and developed relevant generalization of the Coddington equations. Ray tracing and diffraction through sequentially cascaded smooth optical surfaces with nonsymmetrical diffractive phase functions, can now be approached with nearly the same simplicity as customary in paraxial optics of thin lenses and Fourier optics. Relations between diffractive polynomial and fabricated microrelief profile are derived for scalar and resonance domain diffractive optics.

Evaluation of interferometric mirror metrology data and characterization of a telescope wavefront can be powerful tools in understanding image characteristics of an x-ray optical system. In the development of soft x-ray telescope for the International X-Ray Observatory (IXO), we have developed new approaches to support the telescope development process. Interferometrically measuring the optical components over all relevant spatial frequencies can be used to evaluate and predict the performance of an x-ray telescope. Typically, the mirrors are measured using a mount that minimizes the mount and gravity induced errors. In the assembly and mounting process the shape of the mirror segments can dramatically change. We have developed wavefront sensing techniques suitable for the x-ray optical components to aid us in the characterization and evaluation of these changes. Hartmann sensing of a telescope and its components is a simple method that can be used to evaluate low order mirror surface errors and alignment errors. Phase retrieval techniques can also be used to assess and estimate the low order axial errors of the primary and secondary mirror segments. In this paper we describe the mathematical foundation of our Hartmann and phase retrieval sensing techniques. We show how these techniques can be used in the evaluation and performance prediction process of x-ray telescopes.

A modeling method for passive photonic components such as add-drop filters is presented, which allows for fast and accurate system-level ONoC simulation in an electrical EDA simulation environment. This method can be used for design verification of electronic / photonic heterogeneous system, and allows for considerable acceleration of the system simulation.

The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) is a Ritchey-Chritien optical telescope with a 30-meter diameter primary mirror made up of 492 hexagonal segments. Such a large and complex optical system requires detailed modeling of the optical performance during the design phase. An optical modeling computational framework has been developed to support activities related to wavefront & image performance prediction. The model includes effects related to mirror shape sensing & control, mirror alignment & phasing, M1 segment control, low order wavefront correction, adaptive optics simulation for high order wavefront correction, and high contrast imaging. Here we give an overview of this optical simulation framework, the modeling tools and algorithms that are used, and a set of sample analyses. These tools have been used in many aspects of the system design process from mirror specification to instrument & sensor design to algorithm development and beyond.
