During the past few years, many new technologies have been introduced to hearing aids for a better performance. Recently, we proposed an implantable piezoelectric hearing aid. The simulation of our hearing aid is presented with a detail study of its physical properties. However, an accurate experimental study of its performance is needed. Vibration frequency is a major factor that affects the quality of a hearing aid. Among various of existing measurement technologies, laser measurement is always considered to be a precise approach for measuring the frequency properties for MEMS (micro-mechanical-electrical-system) devices. In this paper, a piezoelectric transducer used as hearing aid speaker is demonstrated and an optical measurement method for frequency measurement of our device is discussed in detail. Our measurement system is based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer system. Experimental results show that the vibration of our sample can be accurately detected using a laser beam and spectrum analyzer. The vibration frequency is calculated by measuring the intensity variance. This system aims to provide a simultaneous optical measurement with high accuracy.

The requirements for the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument for NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) specify that the instrument be aligned and operate at cryogenic temperatures. The error budget for the integration of the optical components was analyzed using a multi-parameter Monte Carlo simulation with compensators. Results from these simulations were used to revise the alignment process and error budget. This paper presents an overview of this analysis.

We describe the implementation of differential wavefront sampling(DWS) in optical alignment of a pupil-segmented telescope system. As a wavefront-based optical alignment method, DWS can efficiently provide estimations of misalignments present in an optical system by deliberately perturbing optical elements in a systematic manner. This has been demonstrated in our previous numerical studies with realistic: uncertainties in wavefront measurements, motion control, and optical surface deformations, suggesting that the method has potential in optical alignment and phasing of pupil-segmented systems such as the future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). The basic;idea and procedures of M VS are first described. We then present and discuss preliminary simulations using the currently proposed European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) as an example system.

In the solar tower thermal power generation system, the precision of the slope angle of the heliostat is the major factor, which influences the efficiency of the system, consequently, this angle should be tested accurately. In this paper, the methods based on laser deflectometry arc proposed to measure the shape error of the mirror facet and the connected error of the facets;such apparatus and corresponding software packages are developed. With the help of these two apparatus, the heliostat of 100 m(2), consisting of 55 mirror facets of 1.8182 m(2) (hexagon), for the 1 MWe solar tower power plant in Beijing are measured and connected successfully.

A Low Birefringence Polariscope (LBP) is developed to provide high-resolution, full-field thickness measurement of the liquid crystal cell. By rotating the analyzer, phase shift images can be captured and analyzed to obtain the gap thickness and uniformity of the liquid crystal cells. A comparative study with the commercial system shows good agreement. The proposed method yields accurate and repeatable full-field measurement of the LC cell with a simple experimental setup.

The Large optical Test and Integration Site (LOTIS) at the Lockheed Martin Space systems Company in Sunnyvale, CA is designed for the verification and testing of optical systems. The facility consists of a large, temperature stabilized vacuum chamber that also functions as a class 10k cleanroom. Within this chamber and atop an advanced vibration-isolation bench are the 6.5 meter diameter LOTIS Collimator and Scene Generator, LOTIS alignment and support equipment. The optical payloads are also placed on the vibration bench in the chamber for testing. The Scene Generator is attached to the Collimator forming the Scene Projection system (SPS) and this system is designed to operate in both air and vacuum, providing test imagery in an adaptable suite of visible/near infrared (VNIR) and midwave infrared (MWIR) point sources, and combined bandwidth visible-through-MWIR point sources, for testing of large aperture optical payloads. The heart of the SPS is the LOTIS Collimator, a 6.5m f/15 telescope, which projects scenes with wavefront errors <85 nm rms out to a +/- 0.75 mrad field of view (FOV). Using field lenses, performance can be extended to a maximum field of view of +/- 3.2 mrad. The LOTIS Collimator incorporates an extensive integrated wavefront sensing and control system to verify the performance of the system, and to optimize its actively controlled primary mirror surface and overall alignment. Using these optical test assets allows both integrated component and system level optical testing of electro-optical (EO) devices by providing realistic scene content. LOTIS is scheduled to achieve initial operational capability in 2008.

A molecular imaging method employing acetic acid dilute solution as a biomarker of cervical neoplasia is described and the interpretation of the biophysical processes involved determining the in-vivo measured dynamic scattering characteristics is presented. A compartmental model of the epithelium has been developed for predicting the epithelial transport phenomena that are expected to be correlated with the dynamic characteristics of the backscattered light. Model predictions have been compared and confirmed by experimental data obtained from patients with cervical neoplasia of different grade, with the aid of specially developed imaging system. Results revealed that the dynamic scattering characteristics and both structural and functional alterations are largely determined by the intracellular proton concentration kinetics. This highlights the potential of the developed imaging method and technology for the non-invasive diagnosis, guided therapeutics and screening of cervical neoplasia.

Multilayer optical interconnects offer high interconnection densities and flexible routing schemes. Signals can be routed between the different layers, which can limit the number of cross-overs. In addition, the characteristics of 2D opto-electronic elements can be fully exploited. The alignment between the different optical elements is critical for the performance of the system. Efficient coupling structures are required to couple the light signals between two layers. We propose the use of laser ablated 45 degrees mirrors, which are integrated with the waveguides. Two mirror configurations are proposed: one based on total internal reflection (TIR) and a metallized 45 degrees mirror. A two layer optical structure is presented that contains multimode waveguides and micro-mirrors. The achievable alignment accuracy between the multimode waveguides and micro-mirrors in the two layers is in accordance with the results obtained from a numerical study. Experimental realizations of the mentioned structures and the first results on the loss measurements on the mirrors are presented.

There has been a substantial increase in the research and development of optical metrology techniques as applied to linewidth and overlay metrology for semiconductor manufacturing. Much of this activity has been in advancing scatterometry applications for metrology. In recent years we have been developing a related technique known as scatterfield optical microscopy, which combines elements of scatterometry and bright field imaging. In this paper we present the application of this technique to optical system alignment, calibration, and characterization for the purpose of accurate normalization of optical data, which can be compared with optical simulations involving only absolute measurement parameters. We show a series of experimental data from lines prepared using a focus exposure matrix on silicon and make comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results. The data show agreement on the nanometer scale using parametric simulation libraries and no "tunable" parameters.

As we enter into the 21(st) century, the need for miniaturized portable diagnostic devices is increasing continuously. Portable devices find important applications for point-of-care diagnostics, patient self-monitoring and in remote areas, such as unpopulated regions where the cost of large laboratory facilities is not justifiable, underdeveloped countries and other remote locations such as space missions. The advantage of miniaturized sensing optical systems includes not only the reduced weight and size but also reduced cost, decreased time to results and robustness (e.g. no need for frequent re-alignments). Recent advances in micro-fabrication and assembly technologies have enabled important developments in the field of miniaturized sensing systems. INO has developed a technology platform for the three dimensional integration of MOEMS on an optical microbench. Building blocks of the platform include microlenses, micromirrors, dichroic beamsplitters, filters and optical fibers, which can be positioned using passive alignment structures to build the desired miniaturised system. The technology involves standard microfabrication, thick resist UV-lithography, thick metal electroplating, soldering, replication in sol-gel materials and flip-chip bonding processes. The technology is compatible with wafer-to-wafer bonding. A placement accuracy of +/- 5 mu m has been demonstrated thanks to the integration of alignment marks co registered with other optical elements fabricated on different wafers. In this paper, the building blocks of the technology will be detailed. The design and fabrication of a 5x5 channels light processing unit including optical fibers, mirrors and collimating microlenses will be described. Application of the technology to various kinds of sensing devices will be discussed.
