An important part of a large solar telescope is the ability to correct, in real time, optical alignment errors caused by gravitational bending of the telescope structure and wavefront errors caused by atmospheric seeing. The National Solar Observatory is currently designing the 4 meter Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST). The ATST wavefront correction system, described in this paper, will incorporate a number of interacting wavefront control systems to provide diffraction limited imaging performance. We will describe these systems and summarize the interaction between the various sub-systems and present results of performance modeling.

The results of theoretical investigations into two-wave mixing in media with saturated absorption and refractive index modulation are presented. The processes of nonlinear self-focusing, self- and cross-modulation due to scattering on dynamically-induced optical gratings are taken into consideration. Numerical modeling of spatial solitons formation and interaction in the volume of nonlinear medium was performed.

We have developed fiber optic transceivers (FOT) based on leadframe and plastic molding technology for large core POF and PCS fiber systems. The leadframe style package exhibits a compact small size of 9.7mm x 6.2mm x 3.6mm. For PCS fiber system, the VCSEL based fiber optic transceivers have an operating wavelength at 850nm. The transmitter has an internal control circuit to stabilize the optical output of VCSEL and an integrated coupling optics to provide loose alignment tolerances of +/- 70 mu m in lateral axis for a working distance of 500 mu m to PCS optical fibers. The optical coupling power from the transmitter to the PCS fiber has a variation within 1dB over the wide ambient temperature range from -40 degrees C to +105 degrees C. Eye diagrams of the transceivers at 50Mbps are wide open over the normal operating temperature range from -40 degrees C to +105 degrees C. With a pair of VCSEL transmitter and MSM-PD receiver we achieve 1.25Gb/s transmission over 10m of PCS fiber. In a POF transmission system of 40m, over an operating temperature range from -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C, the fiber output power variation with the green LED transmitter is 1.5dB less than that with a similar red LED transmitter. The eye-diagrams of the green LED transmitter at 20Mbps are captured at back-to-back transmission and after 40m POF transmission.

Recently there has been a drive to create artificial optical materials, or meta-materials, with a specified electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability at optical frequencies. Control over these properties can give rise to new physical phenomena, such as a negative refractive index and "super lensing", with potential applications in nanophotonic systems and nanolithography. Because most materials do not exhibit magnetic behaviour at optical frequencies, control over the effective magnetic permeability is achieved using patterned metal structures much smaller than the wavelength of light. The electric currents induced in the structures produce magnetic fields that may be in phase or may oppose the magnetic field of the incident light. When combined with dielectric materials, these structures form coupled inductor-capacitor (LC) circuits that can resonate at frequencies in the optical spectrum. Since the resonant properties of the LC circuits control the properties of the meta-material, it is important to understand how changes in shape, size and the position of the subwavelength components affect the resonances. Using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method, we study a number of different inductor-capacitor configurations. By applying the concepts of lumped impedance to the electromagnetic fields, the resonant frequencies and Q factors of the tuned optical circuits are determined from the FDTD data. Our in-house electron beam lithography system has been used to fabricate some of the structures. Results of the simulations, the nano-fabrication process and experiments on the meta-materials will be presented.

optical backplane bus based on glass substrate with volume holographic gratings on top surface possesses a great ability to broadcast information. This feature is utilized to accomplish a bit-interleaved optical interconnect system. In this system, each daughter board sends only one bit per round and the bit pulses from different boards can cascade in a designed series when the transmitters are distributed in an appropriate manner. In this way, even slow electronic chips can be coordinated to generate an aggregate bandwidth up to 10Gbps, which is impossible to achieve with a multi-drop electrical bus. Besides the benefits of high data rate and low crosstalk, such a bit-interleaved architecture provides a secure data storage method. Each daughter board only stores a quarter bits of any byte, so that no single board has the entire information and security is enhanced. alignment tolerance and power budget of the proposed optical interconnect system is theoretically calculated and experimentally verified. With collimating lenses, the packing density of transceivers is more than 4/cm(2), and thus the signal density can be above 40GbpS/cm(2)/board. The insertion loss due to misalignment and beam divergence is measured to be approximately 3dB. The bit error rate (BER) of 10Gbps receivers with -12dBm sensitivity is estimated to be below 10(-12).

Microprocessor performance is now limited by the poor delay and bandwidth performance of the on-chip global wiring layers. Although relatively few in number, the global metal wires have proven to be the primary cause of performance limitations - effectively leading to a premature saturation of Moore's Law scaling in future Silicon generations. Building upon device-, circuit-, system- and architectural-level models, a framework for performance evaluation of global wires is developed aimed at quantifying the major challenges faced by intrachip global communications over the span of six technology generations. This paper reviews the status of possible intra-chip optical interconnect solutions in which the Silicon chip's global metal wiring layers are replaced with a high-density guided-wave or free-space optical interconnection fabric. The overall goal is to provide a scalable approach that is compatible with established silicon chip fabrication and packaging technology, and which can extend the reach of Moore's Law for many generations to come. To achieve the required densities, the integrated sources are envisioned to be modulators that are optically powered by off-chip sources. Structures for coupling dense modulator arrays to optical power sources and to free-space or guide-wave optical global fabrics are analyzed. Results of proof-of-concept experiments, which demonstrate the potential benefits of ultra-hi-h-density optical interconnection fabrics for intra-chip global communications, are presented.

GMPLS-based Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) service experiment using the GMPLS network testbed of JGN II was conducted, and GMPLS connections with GbE bandwidth were successfully established by our developed user-friendly web-based GUI on the demand basis. The combination of the GMPLS-based network and the user-supporting system was verified to enable the BoD service in the actually operational environment. The setup time of the GMPLS-based lambda-path in this BoD service was very immediate and became available within only one minute from the time when the users want to use it.

Phased array antennas have received an attention in radiolocation and radar technology due to the fact that there is no need for the physical movement of an antenna and a very fast angle shift of the beam is possible. The need for improving performance in such devices lead to use the optical beamforming. In order to design such system the usage of appropriate dispersion coefficient of time delay lines is required. This paper shows examples of such dispersion coefficient modeling together with possible and useful simplifications.

The alignment of a telescope consisting of 2 or more mirrors with powered surfaces is critical to system performance. For on axis images, secondary mirror tilt and decenter both predominately produce coma, and therefore, either can be used to correct coma. Consequently, for systems that operate over relatively narrow fields of view, it is not necessary to differentiate between secondary tilt and decenter. However, for systems utilizing wider fields of view, correcting tilt with decenter (or decenter with tilt) can result in large aberration variation off-axis. Details of a technique for differentiating between secondary mirror decenter and tilt through the use of off-axis wavefront sensing, aberration calculation, and alignment sensitivity modeling are presented.

Autonomous Marine optical system (AMOS) measures remote sensing reflectance (R-rs) above the water surface and subsurface optical properties (irradiance at depth, beam attenuation, chlorophyll fluorescence, and light backscattering) at predetermined times throughout the day. Data are transmitted back by radio to a networked archival and processing station. AMOS was created to routinely monitor the optical properties of near-surface waters, and make those measurements available to researchers over an Ethernet connection with minimal delay. The Rrs measurements can be used not only to validate satellite and airborne remote sensing imagery, but also to be combined with the in situ measurements so that other water column properties can be estimated. The performance of visible and machine-aided hull inspection is strongly affected by the optical properties of the water. AMOS estimates of these optical properties can be used by optical models to predict both subsurface visibility and the amount of ambient light beneath ships at port inspection sites. An example of the application of an inverse hyperspectral Rrs model to AMOS data from the Port of St. Petersburg (FL) is shown to accurately estimate light absorption due to phytoplankton and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and backscattering due to particles.
