Replicated micro-optics is playing an increasingly important role in illumination and sensing systems in automobiles. The introduction of new design methods and improvements in materials and production technology has led to components which can offer superior perfon-nance, size and weight compared with classical optical elements. Diffractive optical Elements (DOEs) for applications such as beam shaping can achieve optical performance which is not possible with conventional optics. Beam forming elements for use with red and white LEDs play a major role in automotive optics. Customised DOEs can offer significantly more design flexibility and functionality over Fresnel lenses for the complex optical system based on a single or multiple LED source with reflector and wavelength converting resin. Thinner modules and improved efficiency are achieved. With CMOS imager sensors, micro-optical lenslet arrays can improve the effective sensitivity by many factors. UV-embossing and injection moulding are used to produce components in high volumes at low production costs. Replicated mounting and alignment features reduce assembly costs. New materials and processes have been developed to enable wafer-scale production by UV-embossing, producing glass-like components with excellent humidity and elevated temperature stability as well as IR-reflow process compatibility.

Recent progress toward implementing high-density, optical-digital building blocks necessary to accomplish efficient, end-to-end optical interconnect architecture on low cost FR-4 boards has been demonstrated. The optical interconnect system consists of fabricating an optical buffer layer separating board metallurgy from the optical lightwave circuit layer, and implementing optical links between embedded lasers and detectors. We will show an example of 13 10 nm light from an edge emitting distributed-feedback or Fabry-Perot laser operating at 10 Gb/s being guided to the photo-detector by a polymer waveguide. Both lasers and detector are embedded in the waveguide and all construction is built on a low-cost FR-4 board with 3 levels of metallurgy.

Two polymer technology platforms incorporating both polymer-based materials and UV-assisted and hot embossing fabrication processes have been developed for planar optical waveguiding applications. Firstly, a novel hybrid organic-inorganic (sol-gel) materials system with epoxy functionality has been developed for use in short-range optical interconnect applications. The sol-gel material can be easily formulated and deposited by spin or dip coating to form layers of up to 25 mu m in thickness. The resulting film can be selectively cross-linked using photolithography, as part of a UV-Thermal curing process. The basic refractive index of as-deposited layers can be adjusted between 1.48 and 1.515 by modifying the concentration of DPDMS present. The near-field image of transmitted radiation (633nm) demonstrated waveguiding and efficient light confinement within the UV-thermally produced core regions. Preliminary Telcordia reliability testing indicates that the hybrid material waveguides have good thermo-mechanical stability and meet the requirements for central office (CO) operation. This represents a significant improvement in thermal stability over previous inorganic-organic hybrid waveguide materials systems containing acrylate or methacrylate groups that are easily cured by thermal processes. Secondly, an imprint embossing process has been developed for fabrication of all polymer waveguiding components enabling simultaneous embossing of both waveguide and optical fibre alignment grooves. Optimised pairings of polymer materials for the substrate of the device, into which the waveguide grooves are imprinted, and the core, which provides the refractive index step necessary for guiding light through the device, have been identified and evaluated. Insertion loss measurements were performed at 850 and 1330 nm using the cleave-back method and were found to be 0.4 dB cm(-1) and 0.7 dB cm(-1) respectively. Aximetric proposes Distributed Command and Control (C2) architecture for autonomous on-orbit assembly in space with our unique vision and sensor driven docking mechanism. Aximetric is currently working on ip based distributed control strategies, docking/mating plate, alignment and latching mechanism, umbilical structure/cord designs, and hardware/software in a closed loop architecture for smart autonomous demonstration utilizing proven developments in sensor and docking technology. These technologies can be effectively applied to many transferring/conveying and on-orbit servicing applications to include the capturing and coupling of space bound vehicles and components. The autonomous system will be a "smart" system that will incorporate a vision system used for identifying, tracking, locating and mating the transferring device to the receiving device. A robustly designed coupler for the transfer of the fuel will be integrated. Advanced sealing technology will be utilized for isolation and purging of resulting cavities from the mating process and/or from the incorporation of other electrical and data acquisition devices used as part of the overall smart system.

Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) has become a popular technique to investigate the behavior of protein in living cells. There are various mathematical models for the processing of FRAP data. Among them, Compartmental modeling enables researchers to extract information such as the association and dissociation constants, distribution of a protein between mobile and immobilized pools, and the effective diffusion transfer coefficient of the molecule under study. This model is a simple system of linear ordinary differential equations, and its solution used to fit the FRAP data is a simple two exponential function. Therefore, Gustavo Carrero and some other scientists suggest the use of this model(1). However we find that the length of FRAP data affects the stabilization of data processing. We believe that it is the two-exponential fitting function that causes the instabilization. This paper attempts the study of fitting FRAP data using three exponential sum function and gets better and more stable fitting. As researchers begin to focus on the relative influence of protein domains within individual protein, this approach will allow a quantitative assessment of the relative effect of different molecular interactions on the steady-state distribution of protein in vivo.

Two-tone color printing is a common approach to low-cost color image reproduction. Most people perceive colors that, theoretically, can not be expressed by just two colors. (1)) The most remarkable example is seen in prints made with an ink set of cyan (C) and magenta (M);they look like regular full-color prints and the missing yellow (Y) color is often perceived to be present in the prints. (2),3)) Color appearances were compared in subjective evaluations between three types of two-tone prints: C+M, M+Y and Y+M. The superiority of C+M prints was reconfirmed and the reason for this was taken as the target of our study. Our analysis started with the von Kreis model. Color components were measured on selected typical points on printed images of C+M, M+Y, and Y+C prints;the corresponding C+M+Y prints were used as a reference. The von Kreis coefficients were calculated by using measured results on the same typical points that was nearly black in C+M+Y prints and in each two-tone color print. Colors of the typical points on the C+M+Y prints were estimated from two-tone color prints by a calculation based on the von Kreis model. Remarkably good estimation was derived from the calculated results on C+M prints. This result indicates the superiority of C+M prints is due to the fact that they readily activate the color constancy of our natural vision system. We conclude that C+M prints tend to look like fun color prints because we can easily compensate for the missing colors in C+M prints by only using the linear gain-control mechanism at our natural vision system.

SU-8 is a negative-tone photoresist that can serve as a complete optical bench for micro-photonic systems. Functional optical devices and passive alignment structures can all be formed in the same material system with common processing steps. Many interrelated process parameters control the final geometry of structures formed in SU-8, but all can be accurately simulated and predicted by computer modeling. In this work, a comprehensive model of the lithography process was developed and combined with rigorous electromagnetic simulation. It was applied to predict sidewall slope of a tall structures as well as the geometry and transmission spectra of a three-dimensional photonic crystal. The model is seen as an enabling step toward realizing optimized micro photonic systems in SU-8.

Future spaceborne astronomy missions will require telescopes with increasingly greater resolving power, driving the dimensions of the optics to a significant size. Fully integrated observatory verification becomes problematic as the systems approach or exceed the size of the test facilities required to control environmental factors (temperature, vibration, etc). Such tests also require extremely precise test optics. Under such conditions, system verification will start to rely on analytical propagation of ground test data to in-situ performance. Reliable analytical predictions must be grounded in a thorough characterization of system uncertainty. A methodology is proposed to experimentally characterize uncertainty using component test data and integrated system models. The approach relies on uncertainty propagation techniques to identify critical uncertainties and bound the resulting performance predictions, and test data (on the component, subsystem, and if possible system levels) to confirm probabilistic models. The methodology is demonstrated on the Mid-Deck Active Control Experiment (MACE), an articulated flexible test article.

The James Web Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope scheduled for launch in 2011. system-level verification of critical optical performance requirements will rely on integrated modeling to a considerable degree. In turn, requirements for accuracy of the models are significant. The size of the lightweight observatory structure, coupled with the need to test at cryogenic temperatures, effectively precludes validation of the models and verification of optical performance with a single test in 1-g. Rather, a complex series of steps are planned by which the components of the end-to-end models are validated at various levels of subassembly, and the ultimate verification of optical performance is by analysis using the assembled models. This paper describes the critical optical performance requirements driving the integrated modeling activity, shows how the error budget is used to allocate and track contributions to total performance, and presents examples of integrated modeling methods and results that support the preliminary observatory design. Finally, the concepts for model validation and the role of integrated modeling in the ultimate verification of observatory are described.

systems that require multiple actuators for range and precision, such as adaptive optics, large optical beam control, photonics metrology, and semiconductor test - measurement, are candidates for this evolving actuator system. Designers can now consider one system to provide over 100 N force in nanometer steps at up to 50 mm/s with features such as, greater than 20 millimeter travel, power-off hold, high acceleration, and high stiffness. High mechanical power density is beneficial whether fitting an actuator into limited real estate or minimizing total mass for launch or inertia considerations. Smaller mechanical systems benefit from higher stiffness and are less susceptible to environmental transients. The actuator design uses sets of three piezoelectric elements. These constitute 1100 nF of load driven at up to 2500 Hz. In addition to the mechanical actuator, a new high efficiency amplifier and controller are being developed. Total system power density benefits will be noted and clamp design detail is presented.
