The National Research Council's Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC-HIA) has developed an optomechanical integrated modeling toolset called TM-IM. This time-domain state-space toolset has been implemented using Matlab/Simulink/C. The toolset was originally developed for the Very Large optical Telescope (VLOT) design work, and continued when Canada joined in the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project. The TM-IM toolset has been developed to accommodate different structural and optical designs and has been used to evaluate telescope performance to assist in making decisions for the TMT reference design expected fall 2004. Preliminary results include delivered image quality as a function of wind loading on the structure, primary and secondary mirror, and the simulation of an Adaptive optics system which provides control feedback to the primary mirror.

AMOS S.A. is a small company specialised in the fields of opto-mechanical, thermal and vacuum technology. To develop, manufacture and test the ESO VLTI Auxiliary Telescope system (ATS) was considered internally as a big challenge. ATS is a large-sized project and difficult to manage for a small company (since ATS, AMOS has hired about 25 people and now employs about 60 people). ATS is also technically a very complex system because of the following reasons: .Unusual telescope (mobile telescope) .Very tight system performances (e.g. Image quality, OPD, Pointing) .Severe design constraints because of existing site interfaces (e.g. volume, mass) and environment (including wind and earthquake) .Multidisciplinary engineering system (mechanical, optical, electrical, thermal, pneumatic, hydraulic) This paper describes how this project has been managed in practice by AMOS and also the important role of the system engineering. The last paragraph will be dedicated to the main lessons learned.

In optical communication there are systems requiring a parallel transmission of several high bit rate data channels based on single mode fibers. Especially for a free space transmission within such a system a precise collimation of the parallel channels is necessary to guarantee a low loss system. For this purpose compact two dimensional fiber collimator arrays can be used. A main quality characteristic for these arrays is the pointing accuracy, the angular deviation of the collimated beams to a theoretical optical axis. The angular deviation is caused by a lateral offset of the fiber axes to the axes of the corresponding micro lens. To minimize this offset we developed and analyzed an actor geometry for a fiber array which allows a laser based micro alignment of the fibers to the micro lenses. An alignment accuracy within sub microns can be realized which guarantees a pointing accuracy below 0.01 degrees. In this paper we demonstrate some important results of the FEM based analyzes to show the influence of different laser parameters on the actor behavior. Experimental results confirm the results of the FE analyzes and demonstrate the applicability of laser based micro alignment of fibers for the assembly of highly precise two dimensional fiber collimator arrays.

Our developed thermal curing adhesives were reported having excellent performance in coupling optical fibers to waveguides. The fiber-to-waveguide coupling process based on these adhesives was reported in this paper. The process consisted of three major steps in the process, including loading waveguide dies and fiber arrays onto the sample holders, aligning the fibers to waveguides at a constant temperature to reach minimum loss, bonding the fiber arrays to waveguide dies. The sample holders, which used ceramic spaces to isolate heat and springs to damp stress, were specially designed to keep fiber arrays and waveguide dies at a constant temperature up to 120degreesC with minimum shift. When the fiber arrays and waveguide dies were equilibrated with the set temperature, a rough alignment was conducted manually, followed by an automatic alignment controlled by a Melles Griot system. Then, the adhesives with proper viscosity and curing rate were applied to the gaps between fiber array and waveguide dies to bond them together. The curing temperature was optimized by studying the adhesives' curing kinetics with a DSC, so that the adhesives could be distributed rapidly and cured at a speed that still allowed a small alignment adjustment during the curing. A post-thermal treatment process was developed to build the maximum bonding strength for the fiber-coupled devices.

The Euro50 is an extremely large telescope for optical and infrared wavelength with a 50 in primary mirror. It has a segmented, aspherical primary mirror and an aspherical, deformable secondary in a Gregorian layout. A tentative conceptual design exists and has been documented in a study report. Recent activities have concentrated on the science case for extremely large telescopes in the 50 m class and on identification of potential technical "show stoppers". The science case investigation has identified four fields of particular interest. The studies of critical technical issues have concentrated on atmospheric dispersion effects for high-resolution adaptive optics for extremely large telescopes, and on the influence of wind and other disturbances on wavefront control. Wind load on the telescope, the primary mirror and the enclosure has been studied using wind tunnel measurements and computational fluid dynamics. The impact of wind on the total system has been investigated using an integrated model that includes the telescope structure, the primary mirror segment alignment system, the secondary mirror alignment system, and single conjugate adaptive optics using the deformable secondary mirror. The first, tentative results show that wind disturbances may be significant and that the task of correcting for wind residuals may be at least as large for the adaptive optics system as that of correcting for atmospheric aberrations. The results suggest that use of extremely large telescopes for observations of earth-like planets around nearby stars may imply a considerable challenge.

The fiber alignment shifts of fiber-solder-ferrule (FSF) joints in butterfly laser module packaging under temperature cycle testing are studied experimentally and numerically. Using a novel image capture camera system as a monitor probe and the Sn-based solders as bonding materials, we have achieved the minimum fiber eccentric offsets of 8 and 20mum in FSF joints with the PbSn and AuSn solders, respectively. The measured results showed that the fiber alignment shifts of FSF joints with the hard AuSn solder exhibited shifts two times less than that with the soft PbSn solder. The experimental measurements of fiber alignment shifts were in good agreement with the numerical calculations of the finite-element method (FEM) analysis. The major fiber shift formation mechanisms of FSF joints in temperature cycling may come from the localized plastic solder yielding introduced by the local thermal stress variation, the redistribution of the residual stresses, and the stress relaxation of the creep deformation within the solder.

Global astrometry is the measurement of stellar positions and motions. These are typically characterized by five parameters, including two position parameters, two proper motion parameters, and parallax. The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) will derive these parameters for a grid of approximately 1300 stars covering the celestial sphere to an accuracy of approximately 4uas, representing a two orders of magnitude improvement over the most precise current star catalogues. Narrow angle astrometry will be performed to a 1uas accuracy. A wealth of scientific information will be obtained from these accurate measurements encompassing many aspects of both galactic and extragalactic science. SIM will be subject to a number of instrument errors that can potentially degrade performance. Many of these errors are systematic in that they are relatively static and repeatable with respect to the time frame and direction of the observation. This paper and its companion define the modeling of the contributing factors to these errors and the analysis of how they impact SIM's ability to perform astrometric science.

One of our objectives in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT is to offer our students some kind of "hands-on" experience along with theory. Providing a hands-on experience can be costly, however, especially in the field of optical communication. Although reasonably priced laboratory kits are available, the optical-electronic components in these kits are well below communication grade. Thus if we rely only on hardware, our students can only experiment with low power, low bit rate communication over a few kilometers of fiber. Computer simulation software offers an affordable alternative "hands-on" experience. With this software, a student can create a model of an optical system, execute the model and view measures of the system's performance. The system components can include DFB laser diodes, high-speed modulators, hundreds of kilometers of fiber, APD receivers and other optical and electrical components. The student can view the optical signals in the time or frequency domain, measure optical power and signal-to-noise ratio and much more. He or she can also view the effects of parameter variations or find the optimal value of a parameter. The software is easy to learn, especially if the student has previous experience with an electronic system simulator. This paper describes our application of an optical-electronic system simulator in the Telecommunications Engineering Technology program at RIT. We are developing a series of exercises to complement courses in fiber optic. These exercises will allow students to model and test systems that they have designed. We expect computer simulation to enhance our fiber optic courses significantly by adding a reasonably realistic and accessible test bed for student designs.

Multicanonical Monte Carlo (MMC) simulations are used to investigate the joint probability of Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) and Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) in a field fiber emulator. A joint PDF of PMD and PDL showing rare events is reported for the first-time. Wang-Landau simulation technique is employed to see how PMD is affected by PDL at low probability events and conversely, how PDL is affected by PMD. The MMC technique is also used to model an optical communications system with PMD and PDL.

The Space Technology 7 (ST7) experiment will perform an on-orbit system-level validation of two specific Disturbance Reduction system technologies: a gravitational reference sensor employing a free-floating test mass and a set of micronewton colloidal thrusters. The ST7 Disturbance Reduction system (DRS) is designed to maintain the spacecraft's position with respect to a free-floating test mass to less than 10 nm/rootHz over the frequency range of 1 to 30 mHz. This paper presents the overall design and analysis of the spacecraft drag-free and attitude controllers. These controllers close the loop between the gravitational sensors and the micronewton colloidal thrusters. There are five control modes in the operation of the ST7 DRS, starting with the attitude-only mode and leading to the science mode. The design and analysis of each of the control modes as well as the mode transition strategy are presented.
