Recent progress in developing high-performance organic polymers for electro-optics and photonics is reviewed. A highly fluorinated hyperbranched aromatic polymer with the degree of branching around 0.51 was prepared by a mild one-step polyesterification of an AB, type monomer. Further post-functionalization with and thermally cross-linking by aromatic trifluorovinyl ethers (TFVE) afforded thermally stable, low loss optical polymer with improved solvent resistance. By more precisely controlling the molecular nano-architecture, we have developed a series of highly fluorinated crosslinkable dendrimers. These materials possesse most of the desirable properties needed for the fabrication of optical waveguides, such as high solubility in common organic solvents (up to 50 wt%), very low optical loss, and excellent thermal stability. To overcome the "nonlinearity-stability tradeoff", a facile and reversibly crosslinkable NLO polymer system is developed that combines both advantages of high poling efficiency and good alignment thermal stability. By smartly controlling the poling and crosslinking processes through the reversible Diels-Alder (DA) reactions, it allows highly polarizable chromophores to be efficiently poled at the stage of low viscosity linear thermoplastic polymer. The resulting nonlinear optical polymer exhibits a combination of a very large r(33) value (76 pm/V at 1.3 mum) and good temporal stability at 70 degreesC.

The StarLight mission aimed to place the first formation flying optical interferometer into space in year 2006. Utilizing two spacecraft to form a long baseline Michelson interferometer, it would measure white light hinges on a number of partially resolved stars of magnitudes >5 m the wavelength range 600 to 1000 run. The interferometer baseline is variable between 30 and 125 m, and also has a fixed 1.3 m mode. The spacecraft are flown in a parabolic geometry which requires an optical delay line to build up more than 14 m of delay on one arm of the interferometer. To obtain high hinge visibility, starlight wavefront, pointing and intensity must be preserved through 22 reflections from mirrors and beamsplitters. The alignment of a total of 27 optics is maintained through careful thermal design and the use of two actuated mirrors on each arm. This paper describes the optical layout, including the beam combiner design which allows star tracking, optical system alignment and hinge formation on a single CCD. The effects of diffraction of the starlight transferred from a distant spacecraft and from optical surface imperfections are modeled. Other contributors to the visibility budget and the resulting variation of hinge visibility across the focal plane are discussed.

In this paper, we present an automation technique that yields high performance, low cost optoelectronic alignment and packaging through the use of intelligent control theory and system-level modeling. Our control loop design is based on model predictive control, previously popularized in process and other control industries. Our approach is to build an a priori knowledge model, specific to the assembled package's optical power propagation characteristics, and use this to set the initial "feed-forward" conditions of the automation system. In addition to this feed-forward model, our controller is designed with feedback components, along with the inclusion of a built in optical power sensor. The optical modeling is performed with the rigorous scalar Rayleigh-Sommerfeld formulation, efficiently solved using an angular spectrum technique. One of the benefits of using our knowledge based control technique is that the efficiency of the automation process can be increased, as the number of alignment steps can be greatly reduced. An additional benefit of our technique is that it can reduce the possibility that attachment, between optical components will occur at local power maximums, instead of the global maximum of the power distribution. Therefore, our technique improves system performance, while reducing the overall cost of the automation process.

Photonic assembly packaging, adaptive optics, large optical beam control, and semiconductor test and measurement are application areas that have needs for nanometer-level precision. Utility is increased with features such as greater than 10-millimeter travel, power-off hold, high acceleration and high stiffness. alignment applications can benefit from a high mechanical power density. This translates into smaller package size for required force, speed, travel and resolution performance. In manufacturing of photonic packages, the space around the work piece often is limited and ergonomic design considerations for workspace are helped with a small profile. Smaller system size implies less total mass and power required for a given performance level, which is highly desirable for airborne or space applications. Smaller mechanical systems benefit from higher stiffness, lower Abbe error, and are less susceptible to environmental transients. A second-generation actuator system that provides about one nanometer open loop step size with 25 millimeters of travel will be characterized. The first-generation model provided more than 100 N force at 25 mm/s speed. The device is compatible to using proprietary thin film and MEMS technology for a high-friction clamping design that simulates an "infinite gear".

As the dimensions of devices shrink and the processing of new devices gets more complex, the requirements for overlay are becoming tighter. Many process elements and previously unmodeled components now dominate the total overlay budget;such as reticle error, alignment-mark quality and design, tool control, alignment system setup and alignment sampling layout, etc. Unmodeled errors (RMSE) consume a larger percentage of the total overlay as the tolerances become tighter. The strategy pursued was to reduce the contribution of each of these elements to as small as possible. In this paper, an improved sampling method is introduced to optimize the sampling layouts in order to minimize RMSE in alignment modeling solutions. The applications of these optimized sampling layouts in both production and system maintenance are also introduced.

Ceramic samples SiC and AlN as well as SiC samples with different quantity of AlN admixtures was studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy and spectroellipsometry. The numerical modeling of optical properties of ceramic materials SiC+AlN type was made by using Bruggeman theory. Comparison of experimental spectra of refractive index and extinction coefficient for two-phases samples of SiC+AlN type with theoretical calculated give us possibility to make conclude that the system SiC+AlN is heterophase eutectic mechanical mixtures big clusters which are equal distribute in the space of the sample.

The effects of distortion in the complex optical system of an IR scene projector have motivated the development of methods for spatial calibration for scene projectors. A typical method utilizes the projection of a set of test images, with careful measurement of the location of points in the image. Given the projected and measured positions, a parametric model is used to describe the spatial "distortion" of the projection system. This distortion model can then be used for a variety of purposes, including pre-processing the images to be projected so that the distortion of the projection system is pre-compensated, and the distortion of the projection system is negated. This application and specific method have been demonstrated, and can compensate for a variety of distortion and alignment effects in the projector / sensor configuration. Personnel at the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-loop Simulator (KHILS) facility have demonstrated compensation and co-alignment of 2-color projection systems with sub-pixel precision using this technique. This paper describes an analysis of a situation in which pre-compensated images are translated (either mechanically or optically) to simulate motion of a target object or adjust alignment of the sensor and projector. The effect of physically translating images that had been pre-compensated for a different projector/sensor alignment was analyzed. We describe the results of a study of the translation and distortion effects, and characterize the expected performance of a testing procedure that requires translation of the pre-compensated images.

Development of a high power optical micro switch fabricated by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) in silicon on insulator (SOI) substrates is presented. The devices discussed are a key component in a MEMS-based, Naval safety and arming (S&A) system for use in underwater weapons. Two different optical switching techniques are investigated: moving reflector type and moving fiber type. In each technique, a single pair of multimode optical fibers is used to transmit optical power on the order of 1 W at a working wavelength of 810 nm. For the moving reflector type device, an etched vertical sidewall reflector is electrostatically actuated in and out of the optical path between input and output fibers. For the moving fiber type device, v-beam thermal actuators are used to push cantilevered input and output optical fibers in and out of direct alignment with each other. Fabrication is performed on 100 mum thick silicon substrates with fiber alignment channels, reflectors, and actuators being fabricated at the same time with a single etch step. Device concept, modeling, and initial characterization results will be presented.

Self-alignment in the fluidic phase is an alternative technique to conventional pick-and-place assembly, providing cost-effective, precise assembly of millions of microparts. For accurate alignment, the control of unwanted surface defects is crucial. In this work the fluidic system between binding sites for microparts is simulated with respect to defects lowering alignment precision. Local minima are investigated and the modulation of the energy curve is simulated. Furthermore, hysteresis effects are studied. The simulation results allow predictions for the modeling of the fluidic surface tension driven self alignment and thus provide conditions for the robustness of the fabrication process.

This paper presents an overview of our study on the subject that we categorically termed "VLSI (very large scale integration) microphotonics". We examine the scientific and technological issues and challenges concerning three essential steps in this technology: miniaturization, interconnection, and integration of microphotonic devices, circuits and systems in micron or submicron scale. In miniaturization, the issues on the size effect, proximity effect, energy confinement effect, microcavitiy effect, single photon effect, optical interference effect, high field effect, nonlinear effect, noise effect, quantum optical effect, and chaotic noise effect should be addressed. In interconnection, the issues of connecting identical devices (homogeneous interconnection) or non-identical devices (heterogeneous interconnection) have to be examined. optical alignment between micron-scale devices, minimizing interconnection losses, and maintaining optical modes between devices, are to be considered. In integration, the issues of interfacing same kind of devices, two different kinds of devices, and several or many different kinds of devices have to be addressed. Other issues include the design and packaging of the integrated devices and circuits as a system for reliable function and operation. In the course of this study, we closely follow the experiences of "VLSI microelectronics" so that they can provide lessons, learnings, and insights that microphotonics can benefit from. Similarities, dissimilarities, advantages, and disadvantages of the two technologies are explored in such a way that they can be more effectively utilized by mutual support and complement. Directions for future studies are also discussed.
