This paper presents an overview of our study on the subject that we categorically termed "VLSI (very large scale integration) microphotonics". We examine the scientific and technological issues and challenges concerning three essential steps in this technology: miniaturization, interconnection, and integration of microphotonic devices, circuits and systems in micron or submicron scale. In miniaturization, the issues on the size effect, proximity effect, energy confinement effect, microcavitiy effect, single photon effect, optical interference effect, high field effect, nonlinear effect, noise effect, quantum optical effect, and chaotic noise effect should be addressed. In interconnection, the issues of connecting identical devices (homogeneous interconnection) or non-identical devices (heterogeneous interconnection) have to be examined. optical alignment between micron-scale devices, minimizing interconnection losses, and maintaining optical modes between devices, are to be considered. In integration, the issues of interfacing same kind of devices, two different kinds of devices, and several or many different kinds of devices have to be addressed. Other issues include the design and packaging of the integrated devices and circuits as a system for reliable function and operation. In the course of this study, we closely follow the experiences of "VLSI microelectronics" so that they can provide lessons, learnings, and insights that microphotonics can benefit from. Similarities, dissimilarities, advantages, and disadvantages of the two technologies are explored in such a way that they can be more effectively utilized by mutual support and complement. Directions for future studies are also discussed.

The Large-aperture Synoptic Survey Telescope, LSST, will have an effective aperture of similar to6.5 m and a 3 degree field of view. Its 3-mirror optical system with 8.4 m primary, 3.5 m secondary, 4.2 meter tertiary mirrors and a trapped focus offer unique telescope design challenges. The. operation-of this telescope will require quick slewing, accurate tracking and alignment maintained actively for 0.25 arcsec images in the presence of wind and gravity perturbations. We describe our current design for which finite element models show a lowest frequency resonance above 7 Hertz. Further refinement promises an even stiffer structure. The design has been optimized for low mass (230 tons), minimal inertia (2.4 x 10(6) kg-m(2) in elevation, 3.2 x 10(6) kg-m(2) in azimuth) for fast response. It takes advantage of several concepts proven in the Large Binocular Telescope mount, which has shown high performance at low cost. These include elevation motion on C rings placed under the primary mirror, a primary mirror cell built as an integral part of the structure, and the elevation axis placed behind and off to the side of the primary vertex, to achieve balance with minimum mass.

Some types of rough alignment system for pre-alignment of precise alignment is proposed. One is a system using wide pitch gratings, with narrow pitch gratings for precise alignment. The other is a system using only narrow pitch gratings with small slit number, which is simple in construction. The operations are discussed on the basis of the results of computer simulation.

We report the fabrication and packaging of 1 x 8 power sputter on BK-7 glass: The single mode waveguide structures at 1.31 and 1.55 mum have been fabricated using K+-Ag+-Na+ ion exchange at 340 degreesC followed by the reverse ion exchange at the same temperature. The power splitter is first tested on the optical test bench and then fiber pigtailed using an automated alignment system and packaged in a compact housing. The total insertion loss for 1 x 8 power splitter after packaging is 5.6 dB at 1.31 mum and 4.8 dB at 1.55 pun wavelength. The uniformity of power in the output ports is < 1.5 dB while the directivity is measured to be > 40 dB.

To keep pace with the increasing demand for higher throughput, lower cost per unit and tighter specifications, manufacturers of fiber optic devices are now looking towards a new generation of automated alignment tools. The "ideal" alignment tool has six degrees-of-freedom (DOF), (X, Y, Z, Yaw, Pitch, Roll) repeatability better than 50 nanometers, travel greater than 10 millimeters and is fully automated. In this paper we describe the use of INCHWORM (R) motor technology to produce a new "nano-robotic" system that demonstrates a major advancement toward the "ideal" photonics alignment tool. The INCHWORM actuator is uniquely suited to provide nanometer resolution movements over tens of millimeters of range with very high stiffness and stability. The "clamp-extend-clamp-retract" stepping sequence produces direct linear motion with no backlash. INCHWORM motors are integrated in cross roller bearing stages to achieve 20 nanometer and 0.1 are second closed-loop resolution. The high stiffness and stability of the solid-state piezoelectric actuators hold position to a single "count" on a glass scale encoder while generating zero heat. Mounting fixtures hold optical elements so that their geometric centers coincide with the virtual point of rotation. Active alignment processes for selected photonics components, as well as intensity maps of components are presented.

Three epoxy systems were evaluated for physical and optical properties. The three systems chosen for the study were selected on the basis of their optical clarity, color and chemistry. Three distinctly different chemistries were chosen, aromatic epoxy-amine cured Aromatic epoxy-anhydride cured and cycloaliphatic epoxy-anhydride cured. All three systems remained optically clear and water-white after full cure. The three selected systems were tested for physical properties, adhesion and light transmission properties. Light transmission was measured after thermal and humidity exposure. Adhesion was measured after humidity exposure only. Both of the epoxy-anhydride systems performed weft in optical properties but poorer in adhesion as compared to the epoxy-amine system. The aromatic epoxy amine system discolored badly during thermal exposure at 100 C. Data generated from this work will be used in selecting clear encapsulating materials for photonics applications. No single system offers optimal performance in all areas. The best compromise material is the aromatic epoxy-anhydride system.

The ADS40 Airborne Digital Sensor has been developed to fulfil both photogrammetric and remote sensing requirements. The new sensor is more than just a camera to take attractive aerial photographs. It will be the next generation, fully digital measurement device for photogrammetry and remote sensing. The high accuracy design of the focal plane system under flight and environmental conditions (pressure and temperature) is presented. The ADS40 project is introduced as a design based on a modular, customised CCD line-scanner concept, with 4 multispectral CCD lines and 3 panchromatic CCD lines. The presentation gives an overview of all dependencies and design constraints on the ADS40 Focal Plate Module (FPM). The ADS40 optical system has to support both photogrammetric accuracy and the requirement on the SNR for remote sensing applications. The principle used to achieve good colour pixel matching is described in relation to the customised CCD and FPM designs. After a short description of the technical design and performance, some applications are shown to demonstrate the main features of this digital sensor: high accuracy, wide angle, high radiometric dynamics, high signal-to-noise-ratio, in-track stereo capability, multispectral capability.

The optimization of an optical system benefits greatly from a study of its aberrations and an identification of each of its elements' contribution to the overall aberration figures. The matrix formalism developed by one of the authors was the object of a previous paper and allows the expression of image-space coordinates as high-order polynomials of object-space coordinates. In this paper we approach the question of aberrations, both through the evaluation of the wavefront evolution along the system and its departure from the ideal spherical shape and the use of ray density plots. Using seventh-order matrix modeling, rye can calculate the optical path between any two points of a ray as it travels along the optical system and we define the wavefront as the locus of the points with any given optical path;the results are presented on the form of traces of the wavefront on the tangential plane, although the formalism would also permit sagital plane plots. Ray density plots are obtained by actual derivation of the seventh-order polynomials.

A new model (3-dimensional) of OCT based on wave optics and Huygens-Frensnel Principle is derived in this paper. In this model, both axial and transverse information is included so that it can be used to discuss the image properties in both directions. The model is further simplified by narrow-band approximation and plane wave approximation. As applications of the simplified model, we developed Monte Carlo simulation programs to calculate the transverse resolution and to simulate the axial signal of our OCT system. The results well coincides the experiments.

Perception has both unconscious and conscious aspects. In all cases, however, what we perceive is a model of reality. By brain construction through evolution, we divide the world into two parts -our body and the outside world. But the process is the same in both cases. We perceive a construct usually governed by sensed data but always involving memory, goals, fears, expectations, etc. As a first step toward Artificial Perception in man-made systems, we examine perception in general here.
