A numerical approach for three-dimensional optical waveguides using periodic boundary conditions in both transverse directions is presented. Expanding the electric and magnetic fields in a double Fourier series of complex trigonometric functions, Maxwell's equations are reduced to the eigenvalue problem of a linear system for the Fourier coefficients. The solutions yield the vectorial eigenmode fields for guided and radiation modes, both propagating in forward and backward directions. The method is used to analyze the junction of a fiber to an embedded waveguides and the power transfer between two parallel embedded waveguides.

We combine lithographic simulation, experimental data and statistical modeling to build a predictive estimator of total device overlay. To generate accurate predictions of total overlay, me include error estimates on lens image placement, CD control, reticle and exposure tool alignment. Instead of combining these errors in ad hoc root sum square fashion to make overlay estimates, we construct a physical model of the device and metrology marker edge placement processes. The model comprehends the differential placement of metrology structures and device features due to lens and illumination system asymmetries and is therefore applicable to the evaluation of arbitrary illumination and pattern geometry conditions. Since we attempt to model the relative placement distribution of specific device features, the model produces overlay estimates that are directly relevant for device performance. The comparison of our total overlay estimates to device overlay sensitivity data allows a projection of the overlay related yield loss for a given device, processed tool set. Finally, our model allows the process engineer to make informed choices on the optimum error sources to pursue for improving overlay.

The SPAce Readiness Coherent Lidar Experiment (SPARCLE) is the first demonstration of a coherent Doppler wind lidar in space. Coherent lidars can accurately measure the wind velocity by extracting the Doppler frequency shift in the back-scattered signal from the atmosphere through optical heterodyne (coherent) detection. Coherent detection is therefore highly sensitive to aberrations in the signal phase front, and to relative alignment between the signal and the local oscillator beams. The telescope and scanning optics consist of an off-axis Mersenne telescope followed by a rotating wedge of silicon and a window of fused silica. The wedge is in very close proximity to the experiment window, and is essentially in contact with the scanner motor / encoder system. The can environment temperature is nominally 20 degrees C, the window ranges from -20 degrees C-0 degrees C, and the scanner motor / encoder system alone could generate temperatures as high as 35 degrees C. This thermal environment, coupled with the relatively large sensitivity of silicon's refractive index to temperature, has required careful thermal design and compensation techniques. This paper discusses the optical issues of these thermal effects and a variety of methods used to ameliorate them.

NAST-I is a Fourier transform interferometric sounder that provides very high spectral and spatial resolution measurements of the Earth's atmosphere. The interferometer provides two dimensional, low noise data from the NASA ER-2 aircraft suitable for synthesizing data products of future satellite-borne sounding instrument candidates. It is the first such high altitude aircraft or satellite borne instrument. The instrument provides a 2.6 km nadir footprint and a cross-track field of regard of;+/- 48.2 degrees: The instrument has a continuous spectral range of 3.6 - 16.1 mu m, spectral resolution of 0.25 cm(-1), and radiometric noise on the order of 0.25 K. NAST-I has proven to be an extremely reliable instrument generating over 100 hours of high-quality flight data, and was delivered to the sponsor on a very tight schedule. Using a first principles model, the noise performance of the instrument was modeled and found to be in close agreement with noise measured in-flight. alignment jitter has been identified as the major contributor to the system NEdN. This paper describes the model used to predict the instrument noise performance and discusses the comparison to actual flight data.

Thermally induced failures in semiconductor laser diode arrays have been a serious issue in thermal and mechanical design of such an optoelectronic system. Highly localized heating and CTE mismatch of materials have adverse effects on laser operations both at the levels of individual devices and their arrays, and also impact on the alignment required for laser diode arrays for optical coupling. A multi-scale thermal/flow/stress solver CFD-ACE+ package is employed in the present design study of an array of laser diodes cooled by microchannels using heat spreaders. Very good agreement between the simulated results and the published experimental data is achieved for the three dimensional simulations. Prominent temperature peaks are observed for the high power density diode arrays. More than 20% enhancement of cooling using diamond for heat sinks is found over silicon. Thermal stresses induced in the soldering process are investigated for various substrate materials. Coupled flow, thermal and stress analyses are also conducted for the microchannel design.

This paper proposes a new space telescope design in which the classical truss structure of the telescope is replaced by a tensegrity structure. A tensegrity structure is a prestressed structure whose structural shape is guaranteed by the interaction between elastic members in tension (tendons) and a set of rigid members (bars). A nonlinear dynamical model of a two stage tensegrity telescope is derived. Static analysis is performed for tensegrity telescopes composed of two stages. The performance specifications for the control system are formulated in terms of the peak lvalue (L-infinity norm) of the pointing and alignment errors. The control system is designed to minimize a certain upper bound on this peak value subject to a peak value constraint on the external disturbances. Evaluations of the design are performed through numerical simulations of the closed loop system.

We discuss two examples of integration of micro-electromechanical system (MEMs) and a photonic device. In the first instance, a MEMs locking device pin is driven by a voltage generated by photovoltaic cells connected in series, which are driven by a laser. In the second case, a VCSEL emitting at 1.06 mu m is packaged together with a metallized MEMs shutter. By appropriate alignment to the opening in the shutter, the VCSEL is turned on and off by the movement of the Si chopper wheel.

This paper presents the design of an assembly to support the Hectochelle multi-object spectrograph grating. The grating consists of two mosaicked, 420mm by 320mm by 74mm thick, 110 line/mm echelle grating segments, nominally operated at a 72 degrees angle of incidence. The fact that the grating consists of 2 segments that must be co-aligned to within 0.27 arcsecs creates a challenging design problem. After much preliminary examination, two support designs were studied, one utilizing Invar, and the other, selected for development, using a Zerodur support structure. The trade study to select the final design is discussed. The Zerodur design was selected because it maintained higher grating stability throughout the operating temperature range than the Invar design. The Zerodur design concept is discussed in detail, including the results of finite element modeling that shows system feasibility.

Image Registration, one of the scene encoding approaches, is a very active research topic in computer vision and computer graphics community. This paper presents a robust image registration scheme that employs complex wavelet pyramid and the human visual perceptive thresholding techniques. Complex wavelet transform guarantees not only a global optimal solution, but also the scale and translation invariance for the image alignment. Applying the HVS (Human Visual system) thresholding for wavelet coefficients shows that image can be compressed significantly (30-100:1 ratio) while the detail of the structured information can be retained so that the transformation obtained from the threshholded wavelet images is sufficiently accurate when applying on the original images. The transformation can be progressively refined on the multiresolution decomposition. This guarantees the robustness of the scheme with a better performance than the traditional registration techniques. Moreover, the scheme registers images taken directly by hand-held digital camera without knowing camera motion and any intrinsic parameters of camera.

Identification of anatomical structures in magnetic resonance (MR) images of the human brain is achieved either by manual delineation or by applying coordinate system transformations to map the brain to a pre-labeled atlas. Manual segmentation of three-dimensional (3D) MR data is a tedious task made additionally difficult by limitations in visualization. Affine transforms, like the Talairach stereotaxic space, perform a linear scaling of the brain based on manually selected landmarks. This often results in unsatisfactory accuracy for structures further away from the selected landmarks, particularly in pathological cases. It is also based on the trivializing assumption that the brain can be represented as a linearly scalable structure. In the effort to achieve a more accurate and consistent labeling, an algorithm has been designed for the automated alignment of a pre-labeled 3D brain atlas with a sample MRI volume. alignment is achieved by elastically warping a finite element (FE) model of the atlas. The deformation is driven by a set of displacement constraints on the surface of individual brain structures. Solving this model results in a 3D displacement field for the entire atlas brain that aligns the segmented brain structure while extrapolating the deformation field to neighboring structures. The use of finite element modeling assures that this extrapolation occurs in a physically meaningful manner. The algorithm's performance was tested by matching the atlas image to warped versions of itself and to an individual sample brain. The amount of structural overlap achieved by a linear Talairach transform is also given for comparison. Elastic warping showed better performance compared to an affine transform alone or the Talairach method. Overlap increases with subsequent iterations with improvement directly related to the amount of model deformation.
