The coupling efficiency between laser diode arrays or OEIC components and single-mode fiber ribbons drops rapidly with increasing misalignment tolerance. There are trade-offs between the allowed minimum coupled power and the cost of establishing the required alignment. We demonstrate how tapered polymer waveguides may be used to match the laser mode to the fiber mode, resulting in a module with decreased alignment requirements for a given coupling efficiency. Waveguides with tapered mode profiles have been constructed using photobleaching of a guest/host dye/polymer system. Amoco 4212 polyimide doped with DCM dye was chosen as the waveguide material due to its good thermal stability, and its simple processing which allows multilayer waveguides to be readily fabricated. In particular, waveguides which simultaneously taper the mode both laterally and vertically have been designed. This waveguide system is compatible with assembly of the laser and waveguide components into a module by flip-chip soldering. Our solder self;alignment technique achieves accurate alignment of touching chips through an understanding of the dynamics during bonding.

Calculations of the dispersion of the second order hyperpolarizability of C60, C70 and C76 have been performed with a sum over states -- complete neglect of differential overlap/spectroscopic parametrization, plus configuration interaction method. The third harmonic generation spectra of C60 and C70 thin films have been measured in a wide spectral range, and they are in excellent agreement with calculations. The validity of the essential states model description for fullerenes is discussed in terms of symmetry properties of the molecular system.

A spaceborne telescope has been designed and analyzed for a 2-micron solid state coherent lidar system operating on a satellite. The optical system consists of a large off-axis reflective telescope, a large-aperture diffractive scanner, an image derotator and a lag angle compensator. Due to the orbiting motion of the satellite and scanning, the boresight of the telescope shifts during the round trip travel time of the laser pulses to the target. In a coherent lidar system utilizing optical heterodyne detection, the relative alignment of the received signal with respect to the local oscillator beam is particularly critical. Two compensators have been designed to correct the boresight errors as well as the wavefront errors caused by beam wandering due to the boresight changes. Several design approaches for the compensators have been investigated. The optical and optomechanical design issues for such a system are discussed. The results of optical performance, modeling, and tolerance analysis for the telescope are also presented.

We extend a serial communication technique, Partial Response (PR) precoding, to two and three dimensions to increase the capacity and signal separation in parallel readout optical memory systems. We also develop expressions for optimal 2D equalizers that improve signal separation by reshaping reconstructed pixels. We simulate and experimentally verify the performance of various forms of PR precoding in a coherent imaging readout system using 2D arrays of binary phase storage pixels. However, the techniques presented here may be applied to other readout systems and other storage values. With an equalizer, PR precoding yields a factor of two improvements in worst case signal separation over a system without precoding.

The RADAC (Recovery of Attitude and Deformation by Crossed Anamorphoses) system was developed to enable precise measurement of wind tunnel model deformations under aerodynamic loads. The system was developed by the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches de Toulouse to meet high Reynolds Number testing requirements of the ONERA large wind tunnels. This document presents a summary of the measurement principle. The design and implementation of the system for use in the ONERA S1 wind tunnel is then discussed. Finally, experimental results from development tests and qualification testing in the S1 tunnel are presented.

This paper describes an attempt to provide a practical application of a fourier optical signal processing as a preprocessor to a digital signal system. The input illumination is a coherent light source from a HeNe laser and computation of the Fourier Transform (FT) is carried out via an FT lens. An object with its symmetry is placed in the front focal plane of the FT lens and at the back focal plane of the lens, the Joint Fourier transform image results. Limitation and boundary condition of the optical system were studied and experimented. Problem encountered during transformation due to differing light source and intensity to various degree of coherency were also considered both at the optical processing and the digital system processor/compensator. Phase measurement and the digital processor/compensator uses the sum-of-product carry save add-subtract unit with reconfigurability so as to allow optimum cost-performance relationship. The sum-of-product consists of 24-bit floating point units capable of performing efficient multiplication, addition and subtraction. Many of such floating-point units are used in parallel in a pipelined architecture to perform Discrete Fourier Transform or other complex function for Digital Signal Processing computations. This also helps to understand the limitation and accuracy of the transformation and the practical behavior of the optical lens-camera system.

This paper presents a method for analyzing overlay data to provide an estimate of the contributions of the various subsystems to the 3 (sigma) budget. This information can be used to evaluate the performance of these subsystems and to provide insight into problem areas. The method was initially developed using empirical statistical modeling and later verified theoretically. The empirical analysis was performed using the overlay analysis code developed initially at Perkin Elmer and then at SVG Lithography. The results of the code can also be used to predict the overlay performance improvements that can be attained through system corrections or subsystem improvements. The method has been used to evaluate the performance of a number of Micrascan tools using acceptance test data and simulated product data. Results for a typical tool are presented and acceptable tolerances for system corrections are derived.

The results of efforts concerning the creation of a testing system of the wavefront deformations in the telescope optical highway based on the use of the holographic optical element (HOE) are presented. The paraxial analysis of the HOE recording and the work of the testing canal are given. The solution of the non-determinacy problem of the testing results is described. Mathematical modeling of the holographic testing scheme and its correlation with telescope performance are made in frames of geometrical and wave optics.

Electron beam storage rings and linear accelerations are rapidly gaining worldwide popularity as scientific devices for the production of high-brightness synchrotron radiation. Today, everybody agrees that there is a premium on calibrating the storage ring model and determining errors in the machine as soon as possible after the beam is injected. In addition, the accurate optics model enables machine operators to predictably adjust key performance parameters, and allows reliable identification of new errors that occur during operation of the machine. Since the need for model calibration and beam control systems is common to all storage rings, software packages should be made that are portable between different machines. In this paper, we report on work directed toward achieving in-situ calibration of the optics model, detection of alignment errors, and orbit control techniques, with an emphasis on developing a portable system incorporating these tools.

The data density that can be resolved in optical memories is limited by the inherently bandlimited nature of optical systems. In this paper, we show how a precoding technique used in serial communications, Partial Response (PR) precoding, can be applied to a parallel readout optical system to pre-compensate for the spatial data broadening that occurs as a result of this bandlimiting. We examine the performance of 1+D PR precoding, a particular form of PR precoding, in an unapodized coherent imaging system. However, this technique can also be applied to other readout systems. A factor of 15 improvement in average worst case contrast ratio and a factor of 11 improvement in average contrast ratio were measured experimentally. Approximately 50% more area would be needed to achieve the same contrast ratio in a system without precoding. PR precoding was also found to be robust to defocusing and slight tilts, and can be used with a broad range of detector sizes.
