The National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world's largest and most energetic laser, employs 192 laser beams to achieve inertial confinement fusion by irradiating a mm scale fusion target. The optical Thomson scattering (OTS) laser is being deployed to probe the target and understand the target implosion physics using 3 omega and 5 omega probe beams. Understanding of the plasma physics will enable improvements of the fusion performance. OTS is a complex system employing many automated alignment loops. Centroid based approach is one of the common approaches for detecting the position of normal Gaussian beams within the OTS for beam alignment. However, due to several optical effects the alignment beam used for one of the pointing loops is shaped like a comet. The pointing beam exhibits a faint tail and a brighter head. Centroiding with a high threshold usually is able to select the brightest spot located within the head. However, there are cases when the brightest region moves around, in some cases the brightest spot appears in the tail, leading to an oscillation in the beam position with the current centroid-based detection scheme. The purpose of this work is to investigate approaches to find a suitable solution to this oscillation and implement a stable beam positioning algorithm.

The principle approach, modeling, and error analysis are analyzed, and the system configuration based on freeform is advanced proposed in the algorithm analysis. In order to improve the resolution of the imaging system and reach the theoretical limit, the off-axis system optimization method is promoted from the perspective of theory to engineering. The simulation results show that the system can meet the application requirements of MTF, REA, RMS and other related criteria. Moreover, the system has reduced in volume and weight significantly.

Quantitative defects detection has always been the one of the difficulties in optical element surface quality evaluation. In order to solve this problem, the optical element surface defects detection based on dark-field imaging system, which has been researched by our group team for nearly twenty years, has been summarized The plane and sphere optical element surface defects detection details are introduced. Specifically, it involves plane optical element surface leveling, sphere optical element spherical center alignment, low magnification image acquisition, low magnification image stitching, feature extraction, high magnification defects detection and report output based on the form of specific standard (Such as America Military Standard MIL-PRF-13830B or China National Standard GB/T 1185-2006). Besides, a China National Standard about digitized quantitative measurement of the defect, which is proposed by our group (now is in the stage of request for public advice), is also introduced.

Near field optics is a new interdisciplinary subject that studies optical phenomena very close to objects. The system level theory and method of constructing system sensor, the principle of related algorithm, modeling method and error analysis are analyzed, and the system configurations based on free form is proposed. In wide-field telescopes, relatively small misalignments in the optical system can cause large aberrations. The nominal system is normally designed to show a good optical performance over the whole field of view but, in presence of misalignments, the symmetry is broken and the aberrations increase towards the edge of the field. No new aberrations arise, but the known aberrations behave differently and originate multiple nodes, according to the Nodal Aberration Theory. The effects, in terms of image quality degradation, can be especially deleterious for wide-field imagers. This issue can be studied in detail by the ray-tracing programs that are normally adopted for the optical design. Nevertheless, these codes are not optimal for applications where a high execution speed is needed. Here, an application of PSF reconstruction for a wide-field telescope by using an integrated modeling approach is presented. Ray-tracing data are adopted as input to build a fully analytical model. The example of the VST telescope (1x1 deg field of view) is discussed as a case study.

The development and performance verification of a cooled long wave infrared (LWIR) imager optics for a high resolution 10 mu m pitch detector is described for the next generation optronics mast systems (OMS). The optical system features a Field of View (FOV) changing re-imager architecture, offering high definition imagery over a 3x magnification range under harsh environmental and built-in conditions, characteristic of submarine periscope applications. Details concerning optical design philosophy and evolution of the system from low (320x256) to high resolution (1024x768) detectors are discussed. The optical system includes a steerable de-scanner plate that enables motion blur compensation in a fast azimuth scan mode of the system for panoramic image acquisition. A conceptual framework simulates the complete imaging path taking into account a combination of relative illumination, distortion and relative boresight error across the FOV's of the system. systematic limitations of the achievable optical performance due to metrology assisted alignment processes are analyzed with ray-trace modelling. optical performance metrics of asbuilt systems from the OMS family are studied from a predictive modelling perspective to qualitatively understand their dominant error modalities. These are used to recommend actions to maximize achievable as-built optical performance for the system under development.

Large aperture space cameras are widely used in high-resolution remote sensing, ultra-weak space targets detection, high-precision astronomical observation, etc. Modulation transfer function (MTF) can directly reflect the information transmission ability of a space camera. Usually, the image quality of a camera is evaluated by measuring its MTF. The MTF of a space camera needs to be measured during alignment of the optical system and electronic system, preset of the vacuum focus position, mechanical experiment, thermal experiment, etc. This paper suggests a method to model the imaging chain of large aperture space camera MTF measurement systems. The model comprehensively considers the factors of the aberration of the collimator, air turbulence, temperature variation, gravity, and environmental vibration. We calibrate the aberration of the collimator, air turbulence, temperature variation, and gravity induced error by measuring the corresponding wavefront error with a 4D laser interferometer. A star point target is placed in the focus position of the collimator to calibrate the environmental vibration through extracting the centroids of the point target images captured by the space camera. The impacts of the previous factors on the MTF measurement results of the space camera are obtained with the proposed model and the corresponding calibration data. The proposed method can evaluate the impacts of different factors on the MTF measurement results and can guide the measurement of large aperture space camera MTF.

Interference microscopy is a non-destructive full-field imaging method, mainly used to measure the surface topography of different samples. In this work, two designs for improving the signal quality are described. The first consists of an original vertically orientated breadboard interferometer, in a Linnik configuration. The mechanical design of the arms allows the independent control and alignment of the coherence and the focal plane positions for optimizing fringe contrast. A low noise 16-bit camera is used to improve the sensitivity. The second interferometer is based on a Thorlabs tube system, with a Nikon Mirau Objective and a white LED, all controlled with IGOR Pro software or Labview, with the aim of being more compact, flexible and mobile. For both systems, an evaluation of the interferometric signal quality is performed, whereas the difference in lateral resolution by considering the 3D nature of the interferometric system, or only its 2D imaging abilities, is explored.

Bulk optical astronomical instruments face significant cost, complexity, flexure and alignment challenges with increasing next generation telescope sizes. Astrophotonics can mitigate these issues by using compact optical fiber or chip-based instruments. Here we present the design and development of a single-mode fiber coupled optical telescope system (ARIEMIS) designed for the demonstration of novel integrated astrophotonic instrumentation. Using a 4 cm fiber collimator as a telescope, we show on-sky measurements from an integrated astrophotonic chip. We have demonstrated the ability to detect <0.002% absorption depth changes of telluric CO2 lines using a sub-centimeter scale astrophotonic correlation spectroscopy chip with the sun as a background light source. These results provide a route towards demonstrating astrophotonic instrumentation on the larger 35 cm AR IEMIS telescope for the atmospheric characterization of smaller, fainter targets such as planets.
