Free-Space optical (FSO) communication is a promising solution for high-speed data transmission, yet its performance can be significantly affected by atmospheric conditions. This study investigates the impact of Return to Zero-Differential Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (RZ-DQPSK) modulation generation methods on FSO link performance under turbulent environments. Two distinct RZ-QDPSK transmitter schemes, one employing a serial configuration and the other utilizing a parallel configuration, are rigorously analyzed. Through the simulations under OptiSystem 14, the performance of these transmitters has been assessed, providing insights into their efficacy and suitability in challenging FSO scenarios. The study demonstrates the superiority of the parallel configuration in maintaining lower Bit Error Rates (BER) ensuring resilient communication and extending the operational range of the system. The findings underscore the significance of strategic modulation scheme selection for optimizing FSO system performance in challenging environmental conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper reports on the efficacy of six different image processing schemes to properly resolve cutting tool motion from video. We compare the edge detection and tracking scheme with intensity- and phase-based optical flow-based schemes and with digital image correlation. We also introduce the use of two new schemes: one based on particle image velocimetry (PIV), and another based on the use of convolution neural networks (CNN). Methods are illustrated with video of two tools. Results are benchmarked with twice integrated accelerations. We find that the edge detection and tracking scheme, the PIV scheme, and the CNN scheme are robust. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

During operation, wind turbine blades are subjected to varying loads, making them vulnerable, reducing performance, and increasing mechanical failures. Furthermore, blade maintenance is both time-consuming and costly. optical methods, such as DIC, are attractive to measure deformations on this kind of structures because they do not require electrical wiring, they avoid mass loading effects, and they can be easily configured to measure large test articles. In this paper, a novel optical technique based on DIC is described for performing full-field measurements by using contact-less techniques. In this paper, the possibility of using low speed cameras DIC to perform modal analysis and to validate and update finite element models is investigated, testing a scaled wind turbine blade in different conditions. The results obtained with DIC are compared with the ones obtained with accelerometers and correlated with the numerical solutions.

Plastic waste is becoming nowadays a huge environmental problem. Circular economy seems to be the best choice for preserving the environment, by reinserting plastic waste into the industrial process and use. A key step for that is the plastic waste segregation from other waste. This paper proposes a new plastic waste segregation approach based on two modalities: spectroscopy and optical images. The research handles an optical camera for waste image acquisition, while the ground truth for plastic type identification, with respect to the seven primary plastic types: PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS, PVC, and Other, is established through spectroscopic analysis. Various deep learning models were trained and evaluated on a dataset of publicly available and custom-collected images, aiming to achieve human-level accuracy in distinguishing between plastic types. The proposed methodology is based on a set of steps, where the model is first built implicitly on a segregation of different wastes, and then applied via transfer learning for separating the seven plastic types. The system performances demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this combined approach for accurate and efficient plastic waste sorting. The proposed system has been implemented on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B+ as the central processing unit, integrating computer vision and deep learning techniques for efficient and accurate sorting. © 2025 IEEE.

Change detection in remote sensing is an important technique used to monitor surface changes on Earth. However, due to the complexity of remote sensing images and noise interference, traditional change detection methods and some deep learning methods often suffer from incomplete change boundaries and missed or false detections. To address these issues, we propose a Prior Change Information Guided Network (PCIGNet). PCIGNet utilizes known change information as prior knowledge to guide the network in accurately predicting change regions during the detection process. First, we introduce a self-attention module called the Guided Fusion Module (GFM), which overcomes the limitations of traditional convolutional fixed receptive fields and effectively captures long-range information. It leverages the high-level semantic representations of deep features and the local detailed information of shallow features as prior knowledge to aid in the progressive concatenation and fusion of multi-level features. In addition, we propose a Feature Aggregation Module (FAM) to aggregate features extracted by the backbone network, thereby enhancing the strength of dual-temporal feature representation. The effectiveness and robustness of our proposed method have been validated on two widely used public datasets. © 2024 SPIE.

There are a lot of difficulties in the process of extracting function relationship from hard copy curve. Considering factors such as distortion, chromatic aberration, noise pollution and etc., a dense set of calibrated points near the real curve from the digitized image can be extracted out. Based on the fact that the function relationship corresponding to the curve can be expressed in the form of segmented Hermite polynomial function, a least squares model with outlier elimination strategy is presented, which can be solved to obtain the function parameters corresponding to the curve by iterative method. The simulation analysis shows that the difference between the obtained fitting function and the original function is positively related to the effective resolution of the digital image, and the algorithm provided in this paper is of high practical value. © 2023 SPIE.

image key information extraction is an important technique in automatic digital image recognizers. To deal with complex image layout, vague image semantics and image defects, we propose a layout similarity-based model to extract image key information under certain image distortion situations. Our model uses perceptual hash algorithm (PHA) to detect visually similar images and uses a template matching based algorithm to solve distortion problems when PHA cannot find a match. The framework is tested on a dataset with more than 17,000 images and we demonstrate that our model can reach 99.5% accuracy on the original dataset, significantly outperforming Chargrid model and a parity-based model. We also compare the performance of different models on images with artificially overlaid boxes, which is commonly seen on screenshots. Results show that our model still performs much better than the parity-based model. © 2023 IEEE.

Real time and stability are crucial requirements in transmission line inspection. Software can quickly process image data and output results while maintaining stability to cope with various complex environments and operating conditions, which is highly challenging. Therefore, this article designs a new X-ray digital imaging software for transmission line inspection robots. The imaging system for robot X-ray defect detection software is composed of a BJI-1X light generator and a Raines digital imager. According to this imaging principle, internal image information of defects is collected using X-ray digital imaging instruments, and defect categories are obtained using image processing software based on its hierarchical recognition model. Using Faster RCNN algorithm to construct defect area localization model, improve digital imaging accuracy, and ultimately output digital imaging results. The experimental results show that when the balance factor is set to 0.30 and the adjustment factor is set to 1.5, the software in this paper has the highest accuracy in digital imaging of defects. The software in this article can accurately locate the defect area, obtain its location boundary box, and has high clarity. It also has excellent digital imaging performance in determining the type of digital imaging defect. © 2024 SPIE.

The era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought forth new security threats, leading to the emergence of Reversible Data Hiding (RDH) as a crucial digital technology for safeguarding information security. To tackle the security challenges posed by the transmission of peak points in histogram reversible information hiding, a blind extraction scheme is proposed. Given the minimal differences between neighboring image pixels, peak and sub-peak points tend to be adjacent values, allowing for the embedding of secret information based on these sub-peak points. The sender embeds secret information according to the distribution of sub-peak points within the histogram. As peak points remain unchanged during image transmission, the receiver can accurately identify sub-peak points by referencing them, thus facilitating the extraction of secret information. Consequently, this approach achieves blind extraction. Furthermore, to ensure the security of the information, encryption methods were employed to encrypt the embedded information before embedding. Even if an eavesdropper intercepts the image, they cannot access the private information without the key. The experimental results demonstrate that this method is capable of accurately extracting the embedded information and restoring the image without any loss, thus achieving effective reversible information hiding. © 2024 SPIE.
