Under the influence of atmospheric turbulence and as a result of natural vibrations of the adaptive optics system, the radiation images in the focal plane fluctuate in time relative to the laser radiation propagation axis, leading to a change in the wave front tilt angles. When accurate positioning of the focal spot is required, the elimination of angular errors becomes an important point in astronomical observations. Image stabilization on the photo detector matrix of the optical system is performed by the tilt corrector, which is one of the key elements of the software and hardware complex for emulating the tilt of the wave front. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Seen as the essential infrastructure supporting future high-throughput space data highways, Optical Feeder Links are still confronted with the need to manage atmospheric disruptions. Complex correction methods, including adaptive optics (AO), coding, interleaving and handover will be necessary to ensure the high link availability expected from a data providing service. Each of these correction methods might reap the benefits of an accurate propagation channel assessment either for real time optimization to feed control laws of the AO for short-term optimization in a minute timescale and for longer-term, typically dozen of minutes to few hours, to supervise the handover process. We present here the principal characteristics of ONERA’s optical ground station FEELINGS data pipeline and draws perspectives on its exploitation for link availability prediction.

The deployment of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) in wireless communication systems have recently garnered much attention due to its potential to reduce blockages by providing an alternate propagation path and improving reliability. This paper reports the performance analysis of multiple optical reflecting surfaces (ORSs)-assisted free space optics (FSO) communication. Specifically, the performance is investigated by utilizing the selection of the best ORS from the multiple available ORSs. Firstly, we have derived the exact probability density function (PDF) of the end-to-end maximum instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among multiple ORSs-aided FSO links. Further, using the above PDF statistics, the outage and average symbol error rate (SER) expressions of the considered multiple ORSs system are derived in closed-form. Additionally, the asymptotic expressions, which are mathematically more tractable, for both outage and average SER are presented with the diversity gain analysis. Finally, numerical results along with Monte-Carlo simulation results are provided to corroborate the derived analytical results.

To date, many of the laser satellite communications downlink demonstrations have occurred at optical ground station (OGS) sites located at astronomical observatories, which are typically chosen for their favorable atmospheric characteristics including low turbulence. In this study, we investigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence on laser satellite communications performance for a low altitude ground site, where the effects of the turbulence can be more significant. In particular, we consider a site near sea level in Adelaide, South Australia where we are developing an OGS with adaptive optics (AO). A combination of experimental site turbulence measurements and numerical propagation modeling is used to undertake the investigation.

We carry out a numerical analysis of the spatial structure of the eigenmodes of light in atmospheric turbulence and assess the distribution of the singular values under variable turbulence conditions characterized by the Fried parameter and Rytov variance. Under weak scintillation, the highly transmitting eigenmodes found here possess a modal structure that is reminiscent of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes and their simple superpositions. When scintillation becomes significant, we establish that the optimal eigenmodes for communication differ substantially from LG modes and tend to have highly localized transverse intensity distributions.

The experimental assessment of a novel all-optical FSO communication receive device based on a spatial mode demultiplexer and a photonic integrated coherent combiner, is reported. The device collects light from the spatial modes coupled into the input multimode fiber and coherently recombines these modes into an output single-mode fiber via a binary-tree integrated photonic circuit. It was evaluated in FSO transmission laboratory experiments featuring an atmospheric propagation channel emulator. The BER performance of a pre-amplified, OOK direct-detection receiver were measured at 10 Gbps, under various disturbance conditions and strengths. Efficient coupling into the receiver input was shown to be maintained resulting in almost constant BER. Low BER floors and limited detection sensitivity penalties were observed. The feasibility of the proposed FSO receiver is proven, together with its ability to provide higher collection efficiency and greater robustness to phase and intensity disturbances than standard SMF receivers.

The performance of laser weapon system based on Coherent Beam Combining (CBC) depends on its propagation properties in atmosphere. The appropriate semi-analytical model based on partial coherent beam combination for assumed coherence coefficients between beams in CBC lattice was developed. To simulate atmospheric turbulences the Kolmogorov-Fried model of partial coherence and Hufnagel-Valley model of C-n(2) dependence on atmosphere parameters were implemented. The approximated formula on CBC performance in dependence on Fried radius was proposed. The results of CBC modeling were compared to known analytical solutions of Gaussian beam propagation in turbulent atmosphere. The dependence of CBC performance on C-n(2) parameter, elevation angle and range was analyzed. The general conclusion is that application of CBC has not practical sense for propagation on medium and long ranges without effective adaptive optics system.

We describe versatile turbulence simulator for testing and calibration of new techniques for high-resolution imaging of objects outside the Earth's atmosphere using ground-based instrumentation. Examples here include: dynamic aperture diversity, wave front sensing using multi-aperture phase retrieval, and free-space beam propagation for rapidly re-configurable interferometers. Used in the testing of all of these, the simulator uses a high resolution spatial light modulator in tandem with a lower resolution deformable mirror to simulate atmospheric phase distortions over a wide range of turbulence conditions.
