Effective performance of laser systems intended for power delivery on a distant object requires an adaptive optics system to correct the laser beam distortions caused by atmospheric perturbations along the propagation path. The turbulenceinduced effects are responsible for beam wobbling, wandering, and intensity scintillation, resulting in degradation of the beam quality and decline of the power density on the target. adaptive optics methods are used to compensate these negative effects. In its turn, operation of the adaptive optics System (AOS) requires a reference wave that can be generated by the beacon on the target. This report discusses the requirements to the beacon that can support optimal correction of the wavefront. Post-processing of the beacon-generated light field enables retrieval and detailed characterization of the turbulence-perturbed wavefront -data essential to control the adaptive optics module of a highpower laser system.

Environmental effects limit the performance of any electro-optical (EO) system. Tasks such as delivery of directed energy and laser communications are significantly affected by atmospheric turbulence and refraction. A correction of atmospheric effects on the propagation of light can be done by adaptive optics (AO). Nevertheless, challenging scenarios like strong turbulence near the ground lead to high failure rates of the traditional adaptive optics systems. Unconventional wavefront sensors and sensing strategies are developed at Fraunhofer IOSB to provide alternatives for measuring the wavefront deformation of a laser beam and to improve the performance of energy delivery and laser communications applications even in strong turbulence and/or horizontal- or slant-path propagation. © 2018 The Author(s).

Laser communications (Lasercomm) for long distance airborne applications offer the potential for secure, high capacity communications outside the traditional radio frequency (RF) spectrum. This paper will present laboratory and field experiments evaluating curvature adaptive optics for Lasercomm terminal architectures to enable long-range (>200 km) and high rate (10's Gbps) communication links for airborne applications. In particular, the benefits of and requirements to implement higher order adaptive optics correction for airborne systems in addition to tip/tilt correction will be discussed.

We introduce a method for creating temporally evolving wavefront distortions that uses Karhunen-Loeve decomposition and the associated temporal power spectra. We demonstrate that the method is able to produce dynamic wavefronts that follow the behavior predicted by the theory while introducing key advantages in terms of calculation speed and storage in computer memory. Additionally we show how to: 1) create wavefronts that have propagated through multi-layer turbulence and 2) model the action of adaptive optics using the principles of frequency filtering.

A semi analytic framework for simulating the effects of atmospheric seeing in adaptive optics systems on an 8-m telescope is developed with the intention of understanding the origin of the wind-butterfly, a characteristic two lobed halo in the PSF of AO imaging. Simulations show that errors in the compensated phase on the aperture due to servo-lag have preferential direction orthogonal to the direction of wind propagation which, when Fourier Transformed into the image plane, appear with their characteristic lemniscate shape along the wind direction. We develop a metric to quantify the effect of this aberration with the fractional standard deviation in an annulus centered around the PSF, and use telescope pointing to correlate this effect with data from an atmospheric models, the NOAA GFS. Our results show that the jet stream at altitudes of 100-200 hPa (equivalently 10-15 km above sea level) is highly correlated (13.2u) with the strong butterfly, while the ground wind and other layers are more or less uncorrelated.

For ground-based telescopes, adaptive optics (AO) systems aim to correct the wavefront disturbances due to atmospheric *** Point Spread Function (PSF) is one of the metrics of the AO system correction performance when compared to the diffraction limited one. Estimating the AO corrected PSF is important for image inversion which requires accurate estimation of the PSF over the scientific field. This estimation relies on the knowledge of the AO system error budget. Establishing the various contributions of this error budget is an issue because of the propagation process of errors through the AO loop filtering. We have developed a model for SCAO system residual error breakdown which includes temporal error, anisoplanatism, aliasing, noise and fitting terms. Thanks to GPU acceleration, it leads to PSF estimation at ELT scale in half a minute.

In order to improve the quality of correction and dynamic characteristics of the adaptive optical system, in general, the methods of advanced adaptive correction based on the solution of the problem of predicting the phase distribution at the next instant from the optical measurements obtained by the Shack-Hartmann sensor at the moment are considered. The results of numerical experiments are presented.

It is well known that atmospheric turbulence severely limits the applications based on the laser propagation though the atmosphere. The most common disturbances occurring due to the atmospheric turbulence are beam spreading, beam wandering, and scintillation. These effects are continuously changing in response to atmospheric conditions. In this study, we create a Non-Kolmogorov turbulence model which is based on the geometrical optics approximation and the property of Gamma function and integrate with in Gaussian beam analytically. This approach helps us to understand the propagation of the laser beam at different wavelengths in the atmospheric turbulence.

Free-space coherent optical communications have a potential application to offer last mile bottleneck solution in future local area networks (LAN) because of their information carrier, information security and license-free status. Coherent optical communication systems using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) digital modulation are successfully demonstrated in a long-haul tens Giga bits via optical fiber, but they are not yet available in free space due to atmospheric turbulence-induced channel fading. adaptive optics is recognized as a promising technology to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence in free-space optics. In this paper, a free-space coherent optical communication system using an OFDM digital modulation scheme and adaptive optics (FSO OFDM AO) is proposed, a Gamma-Gamma distribution statistical channel fading model for the FSO OFDM AO system is examined, and FSO OFDM AO system performance is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER) versus various propagation distances.

These experiments were motivated by the search for an answer to the question about the possibility of effective use of incoherent source as reference one. In the experiments were compared to fluctuations in the image shake for coherent radiation source and for an extended incoherent. Simultaneous measurements of the wave-front aberrations in the urban atmospheric turbulence on the horizontal track length of 104 meters at a height of 10 m above the underlying surface were carried out. In result we suggest a new operational scheme of an adaptive optical system, which does not require a reference source to be specially created or formed. The experimental scheme uses tracing the image of an object, selfluminous or illuminated by external sources. The results show a high correlation between the fluctuations of components of the mode decomposition for coherent radiation, and for the incoherent extended source of radiation. This means that a non-coherent source can be used effectively as a reference in a number of applications.
