The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is a popular technique for computational electromagnetics (CEM). The large computational power often required, however, has been a limiting factor for its applications. In this paper, we will present a graphics processing unit (GPU)-based parallel FDTD solver and its successful application to the investigation of a novel B1 shimming scheme for high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The optimized shimming scheme exhibits considerably improved transmit B 1 profiles. The GPU implementation dramatically shortened the runtime of FDTD simulation of electromagnetic field compared with its CPU counterpart. The acceleration in runtime has made such investigation possible, and will pave the way for other studies of large-scale computational electromagnetic problems in modern MRI which were previously impractical.

Panoramic or stitched image processing has wide applications in areas such as medical imaging, topographical mapping, and deep space exploration. Rapid development of high-speed communication and artificial intelligence technologies have enabled real-time panoramic image processing, essential to autonomous driving, robotics, drones, etc., and critical in the advancement of smart cities, smart hospitals, manufacturer automation, and intelligent military warfare. Image stitching algorithms are able to join sets of images together and provide a wider field of a vision when compared with an image from a single standard camera. Traditional techniques are able to adequately produce a stitch for a static set of images, but suffer when differing lighting conditions exist between the two images, and from processing times too slow for real time use cases. We propose a solution which resolves these two issues encountered by traditional techniques. First, two advanced blending schemes, including the superpixel approach, have been implemented to resolve the lighting difference. Second, we develop a fast validation scheme to rapidly detect invalid solutions, and package all the system components in a parallel processing architecture to ensure a 0.008 second frame processing time, sufficiently small for most real-time applications. The proposed solution, including its fault-detection system, is implemented in the software level and the need for specialized hardware is completely eliminated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first software-based solution fast enough for real-time panoramic image processing; it would contribute significantly to the advancement of real-time image processing, especially for its wide applications in the modern smart society.

The Radar Signal processing Technology Branch of the air force research laboratory (AFRL), Sensors Directorate (Kevin Magde, Principal Investigator) is investigating development of radar frequency (RF) tomography technology for sensing applications. In conjunction with the recent arrival of a remote test facility, the quantity of collected input test data will increase, and the computational requirements will significantly increase. As the teampsilas work involves frequent algorithmic modifications, the team focuses its research writing programs in high-level languages such as MATLAB reg . applications are currently running on the teampsilas own small SGI Altix reg system and exploit parallelism via Interactive Supercomputing, *** Star-P reg product. Anticipating increased computational requirements, the team would like to use department of defense (DoD) high performance computing modernization programpsilas (HPCMP) major shared resource center (MSRC) systems for some of their work and seeks recommendations moving forward. The team is also interested in processing data at a field location when it is being collected in an effort to improve productivity. This study examines the scalability of example research RF tomography Star-P/MATLAB codes on the Arizona State University Fulton high performance computing Saguaro system, which is an Intel reg multicore Xeon reg cluster with an Infiniband reg interconnect; this type of system can be found at DoD HPCMP MSRCs. The study provides direction toward shortening the development cycle time for RF tomography imaging experiments, in addition to providing guidance for future computing purchases.

The number of space debris has increased tremendously in the last decade, arousing the interest of the experts in the field. The surveillance of the space is a first step in monitoring the traffic of floating objects and has several applications such as the correction of orbit coordinates for satellites or collision avoidance. An improved and flexible framework for real-time detection of satellites using a cheap optical surveillance system is proposed in this paper. The detection method is based on the Radon Transform. The satellite candidates resulted after processing the Radon space are validated by imposing constraints over the satellites length and brightness, and over the stereo matching. We additionally propose a parallel approach for Radon transform on GPU in order to fulfill the real-time constraints. We test our method on a large and variate data set, containing satellites from different orbit ranges, namely medium and high orbits. A high accuracy over 95% was obtained in average for real time satellites detection with minimal false positives.

Multispectral images contain more content and details in comparison to color images and are observed to be beneficial for several applications. However, large size and cost restricts the wider usage and adoption of the multi-sensors multispectral imaging systems. Multispectral image demosaicking methods can help develop single-sensor equivalent systems at low cost. In this work, we present an efficient generic method for multispectral image demosaicking by extending the spectral difference method and we also present the analysis of multispectral filter array (MSFA) patterns on the performance, evaluated using two different metrics and by considering two different benchmark multispectral images datasets. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method, except in cases when non compact MSFA patterns are used.

Image segmentation is a key element in processing image data, Done properly, image segmentation can both enhance the quality of subsequent processing and enable other higher-level processing to generate useful information. Image segmentation that clearly separates objects, from the background can improve the accuracy of the recognition of the object Isolating important objects within an image requires techniques that divide pixels into object or background information. (C) 2007 SPIE and IS&T.A technique adopted from the neural network field is presented for performing image segmentation based on the winner-take-all (WTA) scheme implemented with an optoelectronic architecture. This combination allows the parallel nature of optics and the computational strengths of electronics to model a fast and efficient image segmentation system. A model of an architecture for a large array of optoelectronic feedback circuits that can be realized using new technology to perform image segmentation using the WTA scheme is proposed. The architecture is modeled optoelectronically as an interferometer with a simple non-linearity for the control unit. Results from numerical analysis and simulations show the model can generate WTA behavior Results from simulations are shown with sample images used to test the model's ability to perform segmentation. Describes the design of the Aladdin architecture and the implementation of the prototype which Alliant Techsystems is under contract to deliver to DARPA and the Army's CCNVEO. The primary goal of the Aladdin project is to design an architecture that has high throughput and is compact, programmable, modular, reconfigurable and scalable. The architecture must be suitable for automatic target recognition (ATR) and radar processing, get flexible enough to be reconfigured for applications such as avionics processing. The architecture is demonstrated in a soupcan-sized prototype that consists of 64 320C30's with 92 MBytes of memory, and 16 Alliant Techsystems proprietary parallel Recirculating Pipeline (PREP) chips supported by 512 KBytes of multiport memory. It has a throughput of 2 GFLOPS, 1 GOPS, 1056 MIPS, and can be programmed in Ada, C and Image Algebra.< >

The importance of soundfield imaging techniques is expected to further increase in the next few years thanks to the ever-increasing availability of low-cost sensors such as MEMS microphones. When it comes to processing a relevant number of sensor signals, however, the computational load of space-time processing algorithms easily grows to unmanageable levels. The Ray Space Transform (RST) was recently introduced as a promising tool for soundfield analysis. Given the collection of signals captured by a uniform linear array of microphones, the RST allows us to collect and map the directional components of the acoustic field onto a domain called "ray space", where relevant acoustic objects are represented as linear patterns for advanced acoustic analysis and synthesis applications. So far the computational complexity of the RST linearly increases with the number of microphones. In order to alleviate this problem, in this paper we propose an alternative efficient implementation of the RST based on the Non Uniform Fast Fourier Transform.

In this research paper, we have studied Compute Unified Device Architecture which was developed by NVIDIA for its GPUs. It is a graphic library that provides a set of APIs' which lets us take advantage of the GPU to render graphics on the computer screen. We have listed the advantages of CUDA over OpenGL & discussed the CUDA process flow & model overview leading to the reviews on its applications i.e. MRI, Ultrasound, Tomography, X-Rays, CT Scan, DWT-PCA Based Image Fusion, Morphological Image processing, parallelizing Multi-Sensor, Pyramidal image blending, parallel wavelet algorithm on GPU using CUDA.

This study proposes a parallel nonrigid registration algorithm to obtain point correspondence between a sequence of images. Several recent studies have shown that computation of point correspondence is an excellent way to delineate organs from a sequence of images, for example, delineation of cardiac right ventricle (RV) from a series of magnetic resonance (MR) images. However, non-rigid registration algorithms involve optimization of similarity functions, and are therefore, computationally expensive. We propose Graphics processing Unit (GPU) computing to accelerate the algorithm. The proposed approach consists of two parallelization components: 1) parallel Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) version of the non-rigid registration algorithm;and 2) application of an image concatenation approach to further parallelize the algorithm. The proposed approach was evaluated over a data set of 16 subjects and took an average of 4.36 seconds to segment a sequence of 19 MR images, a significant performance improvement over serial image registration approach.
