A new implementation of the finite element method(FEM) that is suitable for the Cell processor. Since the Cell processors have a far greater performance and lower byte per-flop (B/F) rate than traditional scalar processors, the amount of memory transfer was reduced and a technique was used to hide the number of memory accesses. The amount of memory transfer was reduced by accepting additional floating-point operations without storing the data if the data were required repeatedly. In the present study, such memory access reduction was applied to the conjugate gradient (CG)method. In order to achieve memory access reduction in the CG method, element-wise computation was used in order to avoid global coefficient matrices, which cause frequent memory accesses. Moreover, all data transfer times are incorporated into the calculation time. As a result, the new implementation performed 10 times better than a traditional implementation run on a PPU.

Band selection is a common technique for dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral imagery. When the desired object information is unknown, an unsupervised band selection approach is employed to select the most distinctive and informative bands. However, it may be time-consuming for unsupervised band selection methods that need to take all pixels into consideration. Here, we propose an approach to select several pixels for unsupervised band selection and the number of pixels required can be equal to the number of bands to be selected minus 1. With whitened pixel signatures (not the original pixels), band selection performance can be comparable to or even better than that from using all the pixels. For this approach, graphics processing unit (GPU)-based parallel computing is implemented for pixel selection only to further expedite the process, since computational complexity in band selection has been greatly reduced.

The development of parallel implementations is an important task for hyper spectral data exploitation. In most cases, real-time or nearly real-time processing of hyper spectral images is required for swift decisions which depend upon high computing performance of algorithm analysis. A popular algorithm in hyper spectral image interpretation is the automatic target generation process (ATGP). In this paper, we develop a new parallel version of this algorithm, which is routinely applied in many application domains, including defence and intelligence, precision agriculture, geology, or forestry. We improve considerably the computational cost of this algorithm, and also improve its detection accuracy by incorporating a new method for calculating the orthogonal projection process in which the algorithm is based using the Gram-Schmidt method. Our proposed strategy reduces the computational cost over the a previous implementation of the same algorithm which uses the pseudoinverse operation to compute the orthogonal projection. Our parallel algorithm is implemented on a multi-core cluster system made up of of sixteen nodes, with two CPUs of four cores per node, and quantitatively evaluated using hyper spectral data collected by NASA's Airborne Visible Infra-Red Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) over the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York and over the Cup rite mining district, Nevada, United States.

With the increasing growth of technology and the entrance into the digital age, a huge amount of image data needs to have handled every time which often presents difficulties. So, these data must be stored and retrieved in an efficient and effective manner, in order for it to be put to practical use. In this connection, wavelet transform is used for decades as it emerged as a cutting edge technology within the field of image analysis and in computer graphics. Due to the intensive computation of wavelet transform of the image data, the multi-threaded concurrent computing is considered to be a solution. The Message Sequence Charts (MSCs) are used effectively to specify the communicating threads in the way where high-level transition systems are used to capture the control flow of the system components and MSCs to describe the non-atomic component interactions. This specification is efficiently amenable to formal verification. We present the way how to specify the communicating threads using MSCs. The compression method and the use of wavelet transform for compression are presented. Moreover, the MSC based specification along with the modified concurrency in the threads for concurrent wavelet transform are also presented.

The recent spectacular progress in modern Nan electronic technology enabled implementation of very complex multiprocessor systems on single chips (MPSoCs) and created a big stimulus towards development of MPSoCs for embedded applications. The increasingly complex MPSoCs are required to perform real-time computations to extremely tight schedules and to satisfy high demands regarding adaptability, as well as energy, area and cost efficiency. This results in serious design and development challenges. The opportunities created can effectively be exploited only through use of more adequate system architectures and more integrated system IP modules, supported by new effective design methods and electronic design automation tools. This paper focuses on mastering the automatic architecture synthesis and application mapping for heterogeneous massively-parallel MPSoCs based on customizable application-specific instruction-set processors (ASIPs). It is related to a European project ASAM being currently executed in the framework of the ARTEMIS program. It presents the results of our analysis of the main problems that have to be solved and challenges to be faced in design of such heterogeneous customizable MPSoCs for modern demanding applications.

Heterogeneous parallel systems have become popular in general purpose computing and even high performance computing fields. There are many studies focused on harnessing heterogeneous parallel processing for better performance. However the energy optimization for heterogeneous system has not been well studied. Owing to the differences in performance and energy consumption, the energy optimization technique for heterogeneous system is different from the existing methods designed for homogeneous system. Besides typical voltage scaling method, reasonable task partitioning is also an essential method for optimizing energy consumption on heterogeneous systems. Through partitioning a data parallel task and mapping sub-tasks onto several processors, one could achieve better performance and reduced energy consumption. As the computation cost reduces with specific accelerators, the communication overhead becomes more prominent. Therefore, the task partition optimization should holistically consider the computation improvement and communication overhead to achieve higher energy efficiency. Typically, task partition and voltage scaling are not orthogonal and influence the effect of each other in the energy optimization problem. In order to harness both two knobs efficiently, this paper proposes an integer linear programming (ILP) based energy-optimal solution designed for heterogeneous system. We present a case study of optimizing MGRID benchmark on a typical CPU-GPU heterogeneous system. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method could exploit the heterogeneity in different processors and achieve improved energy efficiency.

The Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB)is a run-time library[1] for parallel programming based on C++. The TBB programming environment facilitates programmers to express concurrency in terms of parallel tasks rather than parallel threads. TBB provide programmers with parallel algorithms and concurrent containers, thus programmers can parallel a program without considering how to map the tasks on to the physical threads. In fact, all the paralleling task work is based on the task scheduler. When stealing a task, the task scheduler select the victim thread randomly. In this paper, we first study and characterize the TBB's random stealing. Then we provide two method to predicate the threads' criticality, using the methods to improve the performance of TBB's task stealing. We did some experiments to validate the achievement in improving the performance of TBB's task stealing.

Branch and Bound (B&B) algorithms are highly parallelizable but they are irregular and dynamic load balancing techniques have been used to avoid idle processors. In previous work, authors use a dynamic number of threads at run time, which depends on the measured performance of the application for just one interval B&B algorithm running on the system. In this way, load balancing is achieved by thread generation decisions. In this work, we extend the study of these models to non-dedicated systems. In order to have a controlled test bed and comparable results, several instances of the interval global optimization algorithm are executed in the system, with the same model and problem to solve. Therefore, a non-dedicated system is simulated because the execution of one application affects the execution of the other instances. This paper discusses different methods and models to decide when a thread should be created. Experiments show which of the proposed methods performs best in terms of maximum running time per application, using the fewest running threads. Following this parallel programming methodology, which is well suited for other B&B codes, applications can adapt their parallelism level to their performance and load of the system(at run time). This work represents a step forward towards increasing the performance of parallel algorithm running in non-dedicated and heterogeneous systems. The adaptive model discussed in this work is able to reduce the overall execution time for a set of instances of the same application running simultaneously. It also exempts the user from specifying the number of threads each application should use.

High-performance processor architectures are moving toward the integration of more processing cores on a single chip. PCs and parallel computer systems will have higher computing performance. It is very meaningful for power system simulation, online stability assessment and control. But traditional serial and parallel software can not fully exploit multi-core's capability without parallelizing restructure. In this paper, parallel simulation algorithms are analyzed and software restructure strategies are studied for multi-core processor platforms. The research indicates that: (1) For PCs, implicit parallel strategy with OpenMP is easier to implement and explicit parallel strategy with MPI or Pthreads is more adaptable to large-scale system simulation. (2) For clusters and distributed systems, MPI+OpenMP hybrid programming is convenient and multilevel partitioning is potential. Both methods provide better speedup.

Nowadays, it is already a banality that people run their applications in a complex open computing environment including all sorts of interconnected devices. In order to meet the network security challenge in nonprofessional human environments, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) have to be designed. Intrusion detection techniques are categorized into anomaly and misuse detection. To describe the outlined problem, we focus solely on externally observable executions generated by the observed system. Thus, we need some sort of tool being able to discover acceptable and unacceptable patterns in execution traces. Such a tool may be the rough set theory. According to the rough set theory, the vagueness of a subset of a finite universe U is defined by the difference of its upper and lower approximations with respect to a partition of U. In this paper, our starting point will be an arbitrary family of subsets of an arbitrary U, neither that it covers U nor that U is finite will be assumed. This new approach is called the partial approximative set theory. We will apply this theory to build an IDS which is simultaneously able to detect anomaly and misuse intrusions.
