Non-invasive neuroimaging techniques enable extraordinarily sensitive and specific in vivo study of the structure, functional response and connectivity of biological mechanisms. With these advanced methods comes a heavy reliance on computer-based processing, analysis and interpretation. While the neuroimaging community has produced many excellent academic and commercial tool packages, new tools are often required to interpret new modalities and paradigms. Developing custom tools and ensuring interoperability with existing tools is a significant hurdle. To address these limitations, we present a new framework for algorithm development that implicitly ensures tool interoperability, generates graphical user interfaces, provides advanced batch processing tools, and, most importantly, requires minimal additional programming or computational overhead. Java-based rapid prototyping with this system is an efficient and practical approach to evaluate new algorithms since the proposed system ensures that rapidly constructed prototypes are actually fully-functional processing modules with support for multiple GUI's, a broad range of file formats, and distributed computation. Herein, we demonstrate MRI image processing with the proposed system for cortical surface extraction in large cross-sectional cohorts, provide a system for fully automated diffusion tensor image analysis, and illustrate how the system can be used as a simulation framework for the development of a new image analysis method. The system is released as open source under the Lesser GNU Public License (LGPL) through the Neuroimaging Informatics Tools and Resources Clearinghouse (NITRC).

RFID technology holds the promise of real-time identifying, locating and monitoring physical objects. Complex event processing is the key part of the RFID middleware. Most of the current methods of complex event processing can't support large-scale RFID applications since they have not considered much on performance and distributed data. In this paper, a distributed CEP architecture is proposed which spreads centralized CEP tasks load over multiple communicating stations over CORBA. Based on this architecture, a high performance plan based distributed CEP method is proposed which uses parallel operations to improve performance. The experimental study shows that the performance of our approach is remarkable in large-scale RFID applications. © 2010 IEEE.

Due to the rapidly growth of multimedia communication, video image deblurring has become a hot issue in image processing. As the image size increases, it is difficult to perform the large size image deblurring computation on a single computer in a limited time. One of the most efficient solving methods is parallel computing. In this paper, we first introduce a variational equation for the blurred image, analyze its computing scheme and improve the discretization, then detail the parallel implemenation with multithreads programming using OpenMP and MPI on a dual core cluster. Some experimental results show that this method can produce the large size video image deblurring. ©2010 IEEE.

Camera networks are an important component of modern complex systems, be it for surveillance, human/machine interaction or healthcare. Having smart cameras that can, by themselves, perform part of the data processing improves scalability both in processing and network resources. In this paper, we present the HYBRID algorithm for multiple person tracking intended for implementation on a smart camera platform, along with the development methodology to implement said algorithm in an FPGA-based smart camera. The HYBRID strategy outperforms the well-known Markov Chain Monte Carlo based particle filter (MCMC-PF) in terms of (i) parallelization capabilities as the MCMC-PF sequentially processes the particles, and (ii) tracking performances (i.e., robustness and precision).

This paper describes a Vision-System-on-Chip (VSoC) capable of doing: image acquisition, image processing through on-chip embedded structures, and generation of pertinent reaction commands at thousand's frame-per-second rate. The chip employs a distributed processing architecture with a pre-processing stage consisting of an array of programmable sensory-processing cells, and a post-processing stage consisting of a digital microprocessor. The pre-processing stage operates as a retina-like sensor front-end. It performs parallel processing of the images captured by the sensors which are embedded together with the processors. This early processing serves to extract image features relevant to the intended tasks. The front-end incorporates also smart read-out structures which are conceived to transmit only these relevant features, thus precluding full gray-scale frames to be coded and transmitted. The chip is capable to close action-reaction loops based on the analysis of visual flow at rates above 1,000F/s with power budget below 1W peak. Also, the incorporation of processors close to the sensors enables signal-dependent, local adaptation of the sensor gains and hence high-dynamic range signal acquisition.

Embedded multimedia systems are expected to fully embrace the future many-core wave. As a consequence parallel programming is being revamped as the only way to exploit the power of coming chips. While waiting for them we try to extrapolate some lessons learned from current multi-cores to influence future architectures and programming methods. In this paper we investigate the parallelism and scalability of a JPEG image encoder, which is a typical embedded application, on several shared memory machines using the OpenMP programming framework. We identify the Huffman coding as the bottleneck that blocks the application from scaling above a 7x factor. We propose a strategy to parallelize the Huffman coding, which introduces a small degradation in some parts of the image, allowing to reach higher speedup factors. A factor of 18.8x has been reached in SGI Altix 4700 using 22 threads. Contrasting these results with some previous works using message passing architectures we consider that the use of OpenMP on top of shared memory architectures should be reconsidered for future chips in favor of message passing architectures and programming models. © 2010 IEEE.

The aim of the paper is to validate a software architecture that allows an image processing researcher to develop parallel applications. The challenge was to develop algorithms that perform real-time low level operations on digital images able to be executed on a cluster of desktop PCs. The experiments show how to use parallelizable patterns and how to optimize the load balancing between the workstations.

This paper proposes a triangular solve algorithm with variable block size for graphics processing unit (GPU). By using diagonal blocks inversion with recursion, this algorithm works with tunable block size to achieve the best performance. Various methods are shown on how to make use of existing profiling tools to successfully measure and analyze performance of this *** use some of the most popular CPU and GPU profiling tools for their advantages and overcome their disadvantages with several new techniques to analyze the performance and relationship of different components of applications. With the presented methodologies, insight information is produced which helps to understand and tune the proposed algorithm and considerably improve the performance of the solver itself as well as the application using it.

Room reverberation leads to reduced intelligibility of audio signals. Enhancement is thus crucial for high-quality audio and scene analysis applications. This paper proposes to directly and optimally estimate the source signal and acoustic channel from the distorted observations. The remaining model parameters are sampled from a particle filter, facilitating real-time dereverberation. The approach was previously successfully applied to single- and multi-sensor blind dereverberation. Enhancement can be improved upon by accurately modelling the speech production system. This paper therefore extends the blind dereverberation approach to incorporate a novel source model based on parallel formant synthesis and compares the approach to one using a time-varying AR model, with parameters varying according to a random walk. Experimental data shows that dereverberation using the proposed model is improved for vowels, stop consonants, and fricatives.

Color blindness is a serious perception problem. Suffering individuals cannot understand messages, which are carrying by many images, especially those, distributed by WWW. In this paper we are proposing three image processing methods to enhance image recognition and understanding by persons with dichromacy. Color difference image is introduced to represent color perception dissimilarity. Two color transformation methods are presented. Results of tests proved the usefulness of the methods for fast color transformation of images in the WWW environment. ©2010 IEEE.
