Cloud Computing has delivered unprecedented compute capacity to NASA missions at affordable rates. Missions like the Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) and Mars Science Lab (MSL) are enjoying the elasticity that enables them to leverage hundreds, if not thousands, or machines for short durations without making any hardware procurements. In this paper, we describe Polyphony, a resilient, scalable, and modular framework that efficiently leverages a large set of computing resources to perform parallel computations. Polyphony can employ resources on the cloud, excess capacity on local machines, as well as spare resources on the supercomputing center, and it enables these resources to work in concert to accomplish a common goal. Polyphony is resilient to node failures, even if they occur in the middle of a transaction. We will conclude with an evaluation of a production-ready application built on top of Polyphony to perform image-processing operations of images from around the solar system, including Mars, Saturn, and Titan. © 2010 IEEE.

Considering uneven distribution of watershed land surface in space is an important characteristic feature of distributed hydrological model. The development of remote sensing, in particular the digital technology, provides technical support for solving the problem of uneven distribution of rainfall and watershed land surface in space. The information of vegetation, land use, soil and geology can be extracted from the remote sensing data for watershed land surface. This paper focuses on extracting the data layer of land use from remote sensing image for distributed hydrological model, namely soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). It extracts the data layer of land use from remote sensing image for the SWAT model of the Jinsha River in district of Panzhihua - Huili - Huidong. The methods and procedure is as follows: (1) Preprocessing the raw image data of remote sensing (2) Selecting the appropriate band 741, synthesizing image of remote sensing data, producing the synthetic image of remote sensing for the study area. (3) Making the land use classification map of remote sensing image by imagery processing and classification of remote sensing. (4) Converting land use classification maps of remote sensing into raster data of ESRI Grid format in the ARCGIS platform. (5) Outputting the re-classification maps of land use by applying the code of SWAT model. The result is that the data layer of land use classification for ESRI Grid format was established in the watershed of study area. The types of land use are nine categories. Contrasting the classification map of remote sensing and ground truth region of interest(ROI), the total accuracy of classification and Kappa coefficient are 79.4%, 0.75. ©2010 IEEE.

The increasing availability of large sequence data proposes new challenges for phylogenetic reconstruction. The search and evaluation of these datasets largely surpass the memory and processing capability of a single machine. In this context, parallel and distributed computing can be used not only to speedup the search, but also to improve the solution quality, search robustness and to solve larger problem instances [1]. On the other hand, it has been shown that applying distinct reconstruction methods to the same input data can generate conflicting trees [2,3]. In this regard, a multi-objective approach can be a relevant contribution since it can search for phylogenies using more than a single criterion. One of the first studies that models phylogenetic inference as a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) was developed by the author of this paper [4]. In this approach, the multi-objective approach used the maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) as optimality criteria [5]. The proposed multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) [6], called PhyloMOEA, produces a set of distinct solutions representing a trade-off between the considered objectives. In this paper, we present a new parallel PhyloMOEA version developed using the ParadisEO metaheuristic framework [7].

An emerging application field for structure matching is related to in silico studies of molecular biology: considering that protein function is mainly related to its external morphology, the possibility to match macromolecular surfaces is very important to infer information about the interaction of biological components. In this work we present a parallel algorithm based on images of local description, originally designed for object recognition in robotics, which has been adapted to identify surface complementarities for screening the interaction possibilities of biological macromolecules. The results obtained show the good discrimination power of the proposed approach, coupled with high performance figures.

Assessing the individual geometry of the coronary arteries in a patient can help to explain diffuse artery disease. Some allometric functions, relating arterial length and volume, were verified in porcine arteries and human autopsies but not in vivo. In this work we use skeletonization methods on MSCT images to render the whole coronary tree in healthy and cardiovascular patients. Twenty patients with and without coronary artery disease were recruited. The coronary was segmented with minimum user intervention. Vessels were separated and measured. A 3D coronary map was individually calculated. The allometric length-volume function L=k(v)V(beta) was evaluated in each patient and plotted in a Log-Log scale. The coefficient k(v) ranged 1.00 +/- 0.35. Slopes ranged beta = 0.69-0.88 and seemed to overlap in the scatter Log plot. The analysis of covariance verified this perception and concluded that lines were parallel. In other words, the allometric function stood for all patients. Values were not different from other studies in humans and pigs. The combination of multislice CT with morphological extraction algorithms was effective to extract allometric functions from coronary arteries in patients and can be easily applied in the clinic.

This paper describes an algorithm and system for rapidly generating a saliency map and finding interesting regions and in large-sized (i.e., extremely high-resolution) imagery and video. Previous methods of finding salient or interesting regions have a fundamental shortcoming: they need to process the entire image before the saliency map can be outputted and are therefore very slow for large images. Any prior attempts at parallelizing this operation involve computing feature maps on separate processors, but these methods cannot provide a result until the entire image has been processed. Rather than employing a single-step process, our system uses a recursive approach to estimate the saliency, processing parts of the image in sequence and providing an approximate saliency map for these regions immediately. With each new part of the image, a series of normalization factors is updated that connects all image parts analyzed so far. As more of the image parts are analyzed, the saliency map of the previously analyzed parts as well as newly analyzed parts becomes more exact. In the end, an exact global saliency map of the entire image is available. This algorithm can be viewed as (1) a fast, parallelizable version of prior art, and/or (2) a new paradigm for computing saliency in large imagery/video. This is critical, as the analysis of large, high-resolution imagery becomes more commonplace. This system can be employed in a default, bottom-up manner or a directed, top-down manner which will assign a preference to certain features over others. One can apply this system to any static scene, whether that is a still photograph or an image captured from video.

The distributed-memory parallel computer has become the most popular platform for the parallel acceleration of numerical simulations in scientific computing area. However, complex system characteristics and large-scale time-varying data produced on such environment present tremendous challenges for convenient data analyzing. A visualization system framework is introduced in this paper, which can be easily used to visual analyze the remote simulations. It utilizes a hybrid computational coupling strategy adapting to the parallel computing environment flexibly without disturbing the simulation code structures. Experimental results show the proposed framework can provide good interactivity during steering remote parallel simulations.

Nowadays by improving the richness of prediction methods and accessing to the more information about systems behavior, the role of proactive strategies in developing more reliable and efficient systems becomes more crucial. However, the goals of prediction and the way that the results can be employed to upgrade the system are still topics which draw recent researchers' attention. In this work, we attempt to decrease Jobs wait time and failure rate by using the results of a job futurity predictor. For achieving this goal, a system component called JSM is proposed. JSM consults the predictor and employs a game theory based model in order to probably rejecting the jobs which are likely to fail. Furthermore, for avoiding from rejecting safety jobs mistakenly, JSM intelligently adopts its decisions with the systems situations. Experimental results state a significant reduction in jobs wait time and failure rate in comparison with other related work. © 2010 IEEE.

In this work scalable parallelization methods for computing in real-time the H. 264/AVC on multi-cores platforms, such as the most recent Graphical processing Units (GPUs) and Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/BE), are proposed. By applying the Amdahl's law, the most demanding parts of the video coder were identified and the Single Program Multiple Data and Single Instruction Multiple Data approaches are adopted for achieving real-time processing. In particular, video motion estimation and in-loop deblocking filtering were offloaded to be executed in parallel on either GPUs or Cell/BE Synergistic Processor Elements (SPEs). The limits and advantages of these two architectures when dealing with typical video coding problems, such as data dependencies and large input data are demonstrated. We propose techniques to minimize the impact of branch divergences and branch misprediction, data misalignment, conflicts and non-coalesced memory accesses. Moreover, data dependencies and memory size restrictions are taken into account in order to minimize synchronization and communication time overheads, and to achieve the optimal workload balance given the available multiple cores. Data reusing technique is extensively applied for reducing communication overhead, in order to achieve the maximum processing speedup. Experimental results show that real time H. 264/AVC is achieved in both systems by computing 30 frames per second, with a resolution of 720x576 pixels, when full-pixel motion estimation is applied over 5 reference frames and 32x32 search area. When quarter-pixel motion estimation is adopted, real time video coding is obtained on GPU for larger search area and on Cell/BE for smaller search areas.

The rapid growth in the throughput to cost ratio of experimental data production technologies is generating vast amounts of scientific data, often organized into "large" objects (genomes, bio-images) exhibiting complex internal structures. Frequently, datasets must be shared between multiple research groups interested not only in the final results, but also in how they are produced. The practical difficulties of moving terabytes or more of data across the network, as well as the need to maintain a clear separation between software stack and storage infrastructure, are thus raising interest in the use of virtual clusters for HPC and data intensive applications. In this paper we employ a MapReduce implementation of an image analysis pipeline used by deep sequencing platforms to analyse different virtual cluster scenarios and their impact on system performance.
