Purpose: Carbon nanotube (CNT) based field-emission x-ray source arrays allow the development of robust stationary computed tomography (CT) imaging systems with no gantry movement. There are many technical considerations that constrain the optimal system design. The aim of this work is to assess the image quality of a proposed Stationary Head CT (sHCT) system through simulation. methods: In our previous work, we defined a system design consisting of three parallel imaging planes. Each plane consists of a CNT x-ray source array with a large number of linearly distributed focal spots and three strip detector modules. Each imaging plane is rotated 120 degrees with respect to the adjacent plane to provide maximum projection view coverage of the region of interest (ROI). An iterative reconstruction algorithm based on the ASTRA toolbox was developed for the specific sHCT system. The ACR 464 phantom and a set of clinical head CT data were used to assess the system design and image quality. Imaging performance was evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. Results: The simulation results suggest that the proposed sHCT design is feasible and high-fidelity CT images can be obtained. The reconstructed image of the ACR 464 phantom reproduces accurate CT numbers. The reconstructed CT images for the human head confirm the capability of this prototype for identifying low contrast pathologies. Conclusion: A three-plane sHCT system is evaluated in this work. The iterative reconstruction algorithm produces high image quality in terms of uniformity, signal-to-noise ratio, signal-to-contrast ratio and structural information. Further work on the optimization of the current sHCT system will focus on speed up of volumetric image data collection in system hardware and further improvement of the reconstruction image quality through regularization and incorporating of machine leaning techniques.

This paper presents several parallel FFT algorithms with different degree of communication overhead for multiprocessors in network-on-chip (NoC) environment. Three different methods of parallel FFT are presented. One is the reference parallel FFT for comparison, and the other two with well-distributed computation as well as reduced communication overhead. By evenly distributing parallel computation tasks which uses data locality, the execution time for completing each stage of FFT can be reduced. Moreover, by optimizing data exchanges we minimize the communication overhead. Depending on the communication regularity, one can select appropriate parallel FFT algorithm. By using the simulation results of our cycle-accurate SystemC NoC model with a parameterizable 2-D mesh architecture, and the performance analysis in time as well as complexity, our proposed algorithms are shown to outperform other parallel FFT algorithm or high-speed DSP implementations.

A graph is a mathematical abstraction commonly used to represent relationships among a finite set of entities, such as hypertext documents or users in a social network. With the recent explosion of online content, the size and number of available graphs have increased as well, prompting research for efficient and scalable methods to process them in a timely fashion. This paper focuses on the calculation of the diameter of a graph, a well-known and relevant metric whose calculation poses a remarkable computational challenge for large graphs. We selected three algorithms based on two popular computing models: MapReduce and Bulk Synchronous parallel (BSP). Two of the algorithms are based on MapReduce and calculate the exact and an approximated value for the graph diameter. The third algorithm is based on BSP and produces the exact value for the diameter. Our tests show that the approximated MapReduce solution produces the best combination of execution time and scalability, although it is outperformed in some cases by the exact BSP solution.

In this paper, we have designed an innovative deep learning model using U-net with PatchGAN discriminator aiming at automatic colouring of sketch images, which provides a novel solution for sketch colouring. Firstly, the image is passed through the dataset to the generator, which receives the input image and tries to convert it into the expected output image. Subsequently, in each iteration, the loss functions of the generator and the discriminator are calculated and the model parameters are updated by the optimiser. Finally, predictions are made on the test dataset and the results are plotted. By passing new unseen data to the trained generator, it was observed that the generation results were as expected and the deep learning coloured images were very close to the actual coloured images. This research brings important implications for the fields of digital art and computer vision. Firstly, it provides a completely new approach to processing sketch images, opening up more possibilities for artists and designers. Second, the model expands new ideas and examples for the application of deep learning techniques in the field of image processing. Finally, in practical applications, this auto-colouring technique is expected to greatly improve productivity and can be widely used in animation, comics and other fields.

Tomogram of eyeground images by optical coherence tomography (OCT) are a set of the echo information on a minute portion by the scanning beam. These images contain many random noises and gap between images. images of OCT are strongly influenced of the motion-induced artifacts during the image acquisition, pulsation by the living body organization. Therefore, it is difficult to form 3D volume images. In this research, a noise removal of 2D images and position alignment processing were performed as a pretreatment of 3D visualization. 3D images contribute to medical treatment of eyeground disease and informed consent. We utilized a texture-based volume rendering technique, and evaluated the usefulness of the 3D eyeground model in the medical treatment of eyeground disease

Algorithmic codes for scientific computing may exhibit diverse levels of tolerance to memory errors, depending on the program behavior when accessing data. For example, tolerance to errors may depend on the specific access patterns used while accessing memory, due to the application data structures and arrays. In this paper, we analyze the impact of the propagation of the errors originated from memory accesses on a solver running on a cluster. The application is written on top of the MPI programming model, and we evaluate the speed of the error propagation to other MPI processes. In addition, we propose a preliminary model to represent the most probable number of iterations needed to propagate the error from one process to any other process of the application. We implement and validate our model with the execution of miniFE miniapplication in a supercomputer platform. Our preliminary experimental results show that our model can make a quite accurate prediction of the memory error propagation within 14% of error.

In this paper an unsupervised parallel approach called fuzzy competitive learning network (FCLN) for vector quantization (VQ) and spread FCLN (SFCLN) for color image compression in the mean value/difference value transform (MDT) domain are proposed. In the FCLN, the codebook design is conceptually considered as a clustering problem. Here, it is a kind of competitive learning network model imposed by the fuzzy clustering strategies working toward minimizing an objective function defined as the average distortion measure between any two training vectors within the same class. The color image information transformed by the MDT operation was separated into RGB 3-plane mean value and detail coefficients. Then the detail coefficients for each plane were trained using the proposed SFCLN method to generate the VQ codebook. The experimental results show that promising codebooks can be obtained using the proposed FCLN and SFCLN for color image compression in the MDT domain.

With the rapid development of remote sensing, satellites and drone technologies, the remote sensing image datasets are exploding. The traditional storage modes can't meet the storage requirements of massive remote sensing image data. Therefore, this paper proposes a large data storage scheme for remote sensing image based on HBase. The method utilizes distributed storage and column-oriented open source database HBase as the storage model of remote sensing image big data, and uses tile pyramid technology and MapReduce parallel computing framework to construct the tile pyramid of remote sensing image. Finally, the remote sensing image data blocks are stored in the distributed database HBase. This method can effectively improve the storage problem of remote sensing image big data, and has good reliability, scalability and processing efficiency.

The modern synchrotron radiation facilities are producing massive diffraction images, which present a severe problem for data processing due to the high dimensionality of imaging data. Feature recognition and selection based deep learning methods have been developed to analyze data automatically. One crucial step is to use AI to screen out the diffraction images without Bragg spots. This paper proposes a feature distillation based approach for screening. It helps to reduce over 40% raw data volume and greatly alleviates the post processing workload faced by scientists.

This paper describes a new parallel sorting algorithm, derived from the odd-even mergesort algorithm, named "partition and concurrent merging" (PCM). The proposed algorithm is based on a divide-and-conquer strategy. First, the data sequence to be sorted is decomposed in several pieces that are sorted in parallel using Quicksort. After that, all pieces are merged using a recursive procedure to obtain the final sorted sequence. In each iteration of this procedure pairs of sequence pieces are selected and sorted concurrently. The paper analyzes the computational complexity of the new algorithm and compares it with that of other well-known parallel sorting algorithms. We implemented the PCM algorithm on a SGI Origin2000 multiprocessor using OpenMP, sorting different benchmark sets of data sequences. Experimental results are compared with those of the Quicksort sequential algorithm and parallel implementations of other sorting algorithms, obtaining that our proposal outperforms the other solutions
