Numerically solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is a naturally serial process and as a result the vast majority of ODE solver software are serial. In this manuscript we developed a set of parallelized ODE solvers using extrapolation methods which exploit "parallelism within the method" so that arbitrary user ODEs can be parallelized. We describe the specific choices made in the implementation of the explicit and implicit extrapolation methods which allow for generating low overhead static schedules to then exploit with optimized multi-threaded implementations. We demonstrate that while the multi-threading gives a noticeable acceleration on both explicit and implicit problems, the explicit parallel extrapolation methods gave no significant improvement over state-of-the-art even with a multi-threading advantage against current optimized high order Runge-Kutta tableaus. However, we demonstrate that the implicit parallel extrapolation methods are able to achieve state-of-theart performance (2x-4x) on standard multicore x86 CPUs for systems of < 200 stiff ODEs solved at low tolerance, a typical setup for a vast majority of users of high level language equation solver suites. The resulting method is distributed as the first widely available open source software for within-method parallel acceleration targeting typical modest compute architectures.

Language-based colorization generates realistic and aesthetically appealing colors by leveraging the guidance of intuitive and user-friendly natural language descriptions. Previous methods in language-based image colorization face several significant challenges, including limited color richness, color bleeding, color distortions, and inconsistent color styles. These issues often arise due to the reliance on dense attention mechanisms, which can lead to an overemphasis on global features at the expense of local details. Furthermore, many feature fusion modules for text and grayscale images are not designed to achieve adequate alignment of the diverse feature representations, resulting in suboptimal colorization outcomes. In this paper, we explore a novel module that employs sparse attention to mitigate the issue of color bleeding and limited colorfulness in image colorization tasks. By introducing a sparse attention mechanism, our method enables more flexible allocation of computational resources with a focus on color awareness. Additionally, we propose a module that effectively aligns grayscale images with color descriptions, thereby improving the consistency and quality of the colorization results. This module leverages the synergy between image features and language descriptions to solve long-standing issues like color bleeding. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that our approach surpasses recent state-of-the-art techniques in both automatic and language-based colorization tasks, validating the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed method in generating high-quality, visually appealing colorized images. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Text-image Person Re-Identification (TIReID) is a computer vision task that involves identifying person in images or videos based on textual descriptions. Current works mainly employ Vision Language Pretrained (VLP) models for cross-modal alignment and to reestablish text-image fine-grained associations for re-identification. However, these methods neglect the variations in intra-class sample features, hindering accurate cross-modal alignment and discrimination of fine-grained features for the same person. In this paper, we propose a Cross-modal Intra-Class Learning (CICL) framework to enhance the model’s capability of learning fine-grained cross-modal features and intra-class sample variations. We propose an image-Text Intra-class Relevance Learning (ITRL) method that considers sample relevance during text-image matching, boosting re-identification capability while maintaining fine-grained text-image alignment. Meanwhile, we propose a Bidirectional Masked Matching (BiMM) method that introduces masks to images and texts, prompting the model to attend to different content regions and establish finer-grained cross-modal associations. We test our approach using the CLIP model on three TIReID benchmarks, achieving results that surpass state-of-the-art performance on multiple metrics. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In recent years, methods based on deep learning have become a hot spot and trend in the field of remote sensing object detection, and a series of encouraging results have been achieved. With the development of science and technology, people's technology and ability to acquire remote sensing data have been comprehensively improved, and high-resolution large-scale remote sensing image data has increased dramatically. However, the current mainstream object detection models cannot directly input large-scale high-resolution images for prediction. This paper proposes a remote sensing object parallel detection algorithm, which uses the mpi4py module to realize multi-CPU+GPU distributed parallel processing. Based on the yolov4 object detection model, it can detect remote sensing images of any scale without reducing the prediction accuracy. And shorten the object detection time according to the number of distributed nodes. The experimental results show that the parallel algorithm has a high speedup ratio, and the parallel detection technology has a good development prospect in the field of remote sensing image object detection.

In order to isolate each chromosome more accurately and completely, a two-stage method of processing overlapping chromosomes was proposed. In the first stage, In the first stage, we propose a DA-UNet (dual attention U-Net) network based on improved U-Net network to segment overlapping and non-overlapping regions of chromosomes. In the segmentation network, the encoder part was replaced by the pre-trained ResNet50 extraction feature to accelerate the convergence speed. A dual attention module was designed at the jump junction, combining the features of a multi-level encoder and a parallel decoder. In the second stage, the output of the segmentation network was matched geometrically to obtain a single chromosome. Experiments were carried out on the chromosome segmentation dataset, and the overall accuracy of this method reached 94.70%, which was 5.16% higher than the existing chromosome segmentation and reconstruction methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve accurate segmentation and reconstruction of chromosome images. © 2024 SPIE.

In X-ray computed tomography (CT) the real rotation axis position often does not coincide with the assumed one: technical imperfections of the tomographic setup, the fast speed of movement of the gantry and goniometer cause rotation axis displacements and inclinations. At the same time the use of incorrect axis location parameters during reconstruction leads to the appearance of so-called tuning-fork artifacts in the form of stripes and blurs at the object boundary. The existing rotation axis alignment methods for cone-beam CT require a large amount of computing resources, are laborious in implementation, are not able to accurately determine several axis location parameters at once, or are based on the processing of additional equipped with reference markers object post-scans and shots that are not always available. Thus the rotation axis alignment methods development in the cone-beam CT still seems to be relevant. In this paper, the developed model for parameterizing the rotation axis position is described and justified. The novel several-stage automatic method for rotation axis parameters determination is described. The proposed method is based on usage of mean projection image and tested both on synthetic and real data in parallel-beam and cone-beam geometric schemes. The absolute error of that method on the simulated data is no more than 1 pixel and 1 degree, respectively for shift and slope.

Scoliosis is a abnormal curvature of the spine often found in adolescents. Commonly the management of patients with scoliosis is done through manual methods. The use of smartphone applications with integrated sensors allows the remote distributed management of scoliosis. Patients and doctors can communicate and collaborate each other through two different methods: web-based methods and app-based methods. Scoliosis management moves from a centralized system to a decentralized system with obvious benefits for both the doctor and the patient. In particular, the applications allow the doctor to monitor the patients scoliosis curve remotely, saving time and money. Furthermore, they allow the patient to easily check the progress of the scoliotic curvature at home and receive immediate feedback about the correctness and effectiveness of the physical exercises prescribed. We report a brief survey of main apps for scoliosis management and depicts a possible distributed software architecture for scoliosis management.

In industry, Computer Tomography (CT) is a key technology used for non-destructive testing and evaluation of internal structures, but significant challenges remain in the processing of truncated projection data. The aim of this study is to investigate an artificial intelligence-based reconstruction system for industrial CT truncated projection data. We investigate the common data truncation problem in industrial CT technology and propose a new data reconstruction method. The method uses the ideas of full variance minimization and segmentation constants to achieve accurate reconstruction of truncated projection data by means of parallel computation. Our study validates the effectiveness and superiority of the method through comparative experiments. Compared with conventional methods, our system excels in both accuracy and stability of reconstruction results, and is better able to handle the challenges posed by truncated data. In addition, we explore the practical application value of the system, demonstrating its potential use in industrial CT. From a single-core to a dual-core processor, the processing time is reduced from 120 to 60 seconds, showing a doubling of the processing speed, which indicates that tasks are efficiently distributed and executed among multiple cores. The research results in this paper will have a positive impact on the development and application of industrial CT technology and promote its wide application in industrial production and quality control.

Stencil codes are valuable methods to solve partial differential equations of models in a wide range of applications in science and engineering. Graphics processing units (GPUs) provide a highly parallel architecture with fast directly accessible memory that is desirable to run stencil codes. They enable larger and more complex simulations that are solved faster compared to simulating on CPUs. We provide a solution for users to run highly parallel stencil codes on GPUs, that can also be efficiently used on a distributed GPU cluster. In this work, we present an extension to the multi-disciplinary framework NAStJA originally designed to efficiently run stencil codes on the CPUs in current high-performance computing (HPC) systems, to also be able to run on GPUs. We describe different methods to increase the performance of stencil codes on GPUs like a border exchange method which is transparent to the user, as well as a buffer for gradient values that are needed multiple times. We show their performance using the phase-field method as a stencil code example. With this GPU extension and optimizations implemented into the NAStJA framework, we can show highly improved performance compared to the CPU implementation, and an efficiency of 92% (weak scaling) for a large-scale example simulation on 64 GPUs on the ForHLR II HPC system.
