images obtained with adaptive optics (AO) systems can be improved by using restoration techniques, the AO-correction being only partial. However, these methods require an accurate knowledge of the system point spread function (PSF). Adaptive optics systems allow one to estimate the point spread function (PSF) during the science observation. Using data from the wave-front sensor (WFS), a direct estimation of the averaged parallel phase structure and an estimation of the noise on the measurements are provided. The averaged orthogonal phase structure (not seen by the system), and the aliasing covariance are estimated using an end-to-end AO simulation. Finally, the estimated PSF is reconstructed using the algorithm of Veran et al. (1997).(1) However, this reconstruction is non perfect. Several approximations are done (stationary resudual phase, gaussian phase, simulated aliasing, etc ... ) and can impact the optical transfer function (OTF) in the case of a rather poor correction. Our aim is to give an error budget for the whole PSF reconstruction process and to link this PSF reconstruction with a deconvolution algorithm that take into account this PSF variability. Indeed, a myopic deconvolution algorithm can be feed with a priori on the object and the PSF. The latter can be obtained by studying the PSF reconstruction error budget as follows in this paper. Finally, this work will lead to an estimation of the error on the deconvolved image allowing one to perform an accurate astrometry/photometry on the observed objects and to strengthen the contrast in the images. We concluded that to neglect the global cross-term or to estimate the aliasing on the measurements using simulations has no effect on the PSF reconstruction.

An object-based image processing technique is applied to detect inundated areas using Land sat images. An interoperable Web-based system was developed to conduct the analyses so that redundant steps in Land sat image processing can be effectively eliminated. A review process is used to discover and develop suitable algorithms to automatically detect inundated areas and immediately transfer the results to the Web-based interface. This is a significant improvement over currently available methods for inundation detection systems. The tool is expected to be a practical inundated area detection function and be applicable across wide-reaching areas.

The processing of microscopic tissue images and especially the detection of cell nuclei is nowadays done more and more using digital imagery and special immunodiagnostic software products. Since several methods (and applications) were developed for the same purpose, it is important to have a measuring number to determine which one is more efficient than the others. The purpose of the article is to develop a generally usable measurement number that is based on the “gold standard” tests used in the field of medicine and that can be used to perform an evaluation using any of image segmentation algorithms. Since interpreting the results themselves can be a pretty time consuming task, the article also contains a recommendation for the efficient implementation and a simple example to compare three algorithms used for cell nuclei detection.

The edge-directed interpolation scheme is a noniterative, orientation-adaptive method to enhance image resolution with better visual effect than conventional interpolation methods. It interpolates the missing pixels based on the covariance of a high-resolution image estimated from the covariance of the low-resolution image. In spite of the impressive performance, the computational complexity of covariance-based adaptation is significantly higher than that of the conventional linear interpolation algorithms. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based massively parallel version of the edge-directed interpolation scheme. A speedup of 61.7x can be achieved with respect to its single-threaded CPU counterpart in the host computer.

The aim of this work is to solve the image retrieval problems with modern methods of numerical linear algebra, which can be easily parallelized for distributed memory architectures like a cluster platform. Algorithm presented in this paper is singular value decomposition (SVD). We show that SVD is directly linked with information retrieval through latent semantic indexing. However, our main concern is efficiency of computations of SVD. We present our parallel implementation of Householder bidiagonalization, which we consider the most computationally demanding step of singular value decomposition. We shall also compare our proposed algorithms with commonly used approaches on the experiments, and we shall emphasize their advatages in sence of usage of standard optimized linear algebra packages.

Advances in the image processing field have brought new methods which are able to perform complex tasks robustly. However, in order to meet constraints on functionality and reliability, imaging application developers often design complex algorithms with many parameters which must be finely tuned for each particular environment. The best approach for tuning these algorithms is to use an automatic training method, but the computational cost of this kind of training method is prohibitive, making it inviable even in powerful machines. The same problem arises when designing testing procedures. This work presents methods to train and test complex image processing algorithms in parallel execution environments. The approach proposed in this work is to use existing resources in offices or laboratories, rather than expensive clusters. These resources are typically non-dedicated, heterogeneous and unreliable. The proposed methods have been designed to deal with all these issues. Two methods are proposed: intelligent training based on genetic algorithms and PVM, and a full factorial design based on grid computing which can be used for training or testing. These methods are capable of harnessing the available computational power resources, giving more work to more powerful machines, while taking its unreliable nature into account. Both methods have been tested using real applications.

Onboard processing of remotely sensed hyperspectral data is a highly desirable goal in many applications. For this purpose, compact reconfigurable hardware modules such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are widely used. In this paper, we develop a new implementation of an automatic target generation process (ATGP) for hyperspectral images. Our implementation is based on a design methodology that starts from a high-level description in Matlab (or alternative C/C++) and obtains a register transfer level (RTL) description that can be ported to FPGAs. In order to validate our new implementation, we develop a quantitative and comparative study using two different FPGA architectures: Xilinx Virtex-5 and Altera Stratix-iii Altera. Experimental results have been obtained in the context of a real application focused on the detection of mineral components over the Cuprite mining district (Nevada), using hyperspectral data collected by NASA's Airborne Visible Infra-Red Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). Our experimental results indicate that the proposed implementation can achieve peak frequency designs above 200MHz in the considered FPGAs, in addition to satisfactory results in terms of target detection accuracy and parallel performance. This represents a step forward towards the design of real-time onboard implementations of hyperspectral image analysis algorithms.

In this paper, we present a new method for quantifying color information so as to detect edges in color images. Our method uses the volume of a pixel in the HSI color space, allied with noise reduction, thresholding and edge thinning. We implement our algorithm using NVIDIA Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) for direct execution on Graphics processing Units (GPUs). Our experimental results show that: compared to traditional edge detection methods, our method can improve the accuracy of edge detection and withstand greater levels of noise in images;and our GPU implementation achieves speedups over related CUDA implementations.

Phase shift Moiré is a very popular and one of the most successful techniques for shape measurement of 3-D objects such as PCB (printed circuit board), TFT (thin film transistor), LCD (Liquid crystal display) etc. Various implementations of phase shift moiré are available for improving accuracy and/or speed. Although, these methods contribute a lot in reducing the computation with some compromise in accuracy, there is a lot of scope of improving the performance of these algorithms with increased accuracy, especially when specialized hardware like GPU is available. GPU contains many core or processing elements that can process the same work concurrently resulting in dramatic increase in performance. In this paper, we propose the parallel implementation of the phase shift moiré method on CUDA. A novel method called image stacking method is proposed that can also be used for CUDA implementation of similar algorithms to improve performance. Using this technique, we are able to execute the application 180 times faster compared to the CPU implementation. © 2011 IEEE.
