Exploring parallel capabilities of an innovative numerical method for recovering image velocity vectors field

In this paper an efficient method devoted to estimate the velocity vectors field is investigated. The method is based on a quasi-interpolant operator and involves a large amount of computation. The operations characterizing the computational scheme are ideal for parallel processing because they are local, regular and repetitive. Therefore, the spatial parallelism of the process is studied to rapidly proceed in the computation on distributed multiprocessor systems. The process has shown to be synchoronous, with good task balancing and requiring a small amount of data transfer. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An emerging application field for structure matching is related to in silico studies of molecular biology: considering that protein function is mainly related to its external morphology, the possibility to match macromolecular surfaces is very important to infer information about the interaction of biological components. In this work we present a parallel algorithm based on images of local description, originally designed for object recognition in robotics, which has been adapted to identify surface complementarities for screening the interaction possibilities of biological macromolecules. The results obtained show the good discrimination power of the proposed approach, coupled with high performance figures.

Tissue MicroArray technology aims to perform immunohistochemical staining on hundreds of different tissue samples simultaneously, allowing faster analysis and considerably reducing costs incurred in staining. The presented work supports the pre-array phase of this technique, i.e. the automatic discrimination between normal and pathological regions within the analyzed tissues, and it works in the specific context of tubular breast cancer. The diagnosis is performed by automatically analyzing specific morphological features of the breast samples, in order to define if tissues present a normal behavior either they show pathological characteristics, in particular the absence of a double layer of cells around the lumen or the decay of a regular glands-and-lobules structure. Tissue structure is investigated through a parallel image processing algorithm, which performs the extraction of morphological parameters from the acquired images and compares them to experimentally validated threshold values. The input image is divided into a number of independent sub-images, to be singularly analyzed and labeled according to the result of the computed diagnosis. The time spent to actually analyze each sub-image generally varies depending on the pathological characteristics of each part of the tissue. In order to properly manage and exploit this feature of the algorithm, the analysis of the sub-images is dynamically dispatched among parallel processes. Experimental results, carried on by exploiting the parallel paradigm, certify the actual improvement in the execution time, leading to almost linear speed-up values on the actual tissue elaboration.

We consider a distributed detection system formed by a large number of local detectors and a fusion center that performs a Neyman-Pearson fusion of the binary quantizations of the sensor observations. The aforementioned local decisions are taken with no kind of cooperation and transmitted to the fusion center over error free parallel access channels. Furthermore, the devices are located on a rectangular lattice so that sensors belonging to a specific row or column are equally spaced. For each hypothesis H-0 and H-1, the correlation structure of the local decisions is modelled with a two-dimensional causal field where the rows and columns are outcomes of the same first-order binary Markov chain. Under this scenario, we derive a closed-form error exponent for the Neyman-Pearson fusion of the local decisions. Afterwards, using the derived error exponent we study the effect of different design parameters of the network on its overall detection performance.

The defense, intelligence, and homeland security communities are driving a need for software dominant, real-time or near-real time atmospheric turbulence compensated imagery. The development of parallel processing capabilities are finding application in diverse areas including image processing, target tracking, pattern recognition, and image fusion to name a few. A novel approach to the computationally intensive case of software dominant optical and near infrared imaging through atmospheric turbulence is addressed in this paper. Previously, the somewhat conventional wavelength diversity method has been used to compensate for atmospheric turbulence with great success. We apply a new correlation based approach to the wavelength diversity methodology using a parallel processing architecture enabling high speed atmospheric turbulence compensation. methods for optical imaging through distributed turbulence are discussed, simulation results are presented, and computational and performance assessments are provided.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging modality that allows the detection of tissue with particular properties or the observation of metabolic processes in living organisms over time. It plays a vital role in cancer diagnosis and heart examination and represents a promising method for early diagnosis of dementia. With the advancement of scanner technology as well as an ever increasing demand for higher quality images and higher patient throughput the image reconstruction system can become a bottleneck of a PET system. To meet this demand for more computing power in the reconstruction system a novel way to speed up the image reconstruction process for modern PET systems is presented. A common graphics processing device in conjunction with the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) is used to speed up existing algorithms for the CPU. Projectors for full 3D reconstruction are ported to the CUDA device and new algorithms are implemented where necessary. The main focus of this port is to speed up the calculation and to maintain the numerical accuracy of the result. On the basis of the CPU reconstruction system a new system that uses GPU projectors is implemented. With this modification a two-fold speed up is achieved compared to the highly optimized CPU implementation running on 4 CPU cores. Different optimization methods are explored and applied where suitable. The results calculated by GPU and CPU projectors are numerically identical allowing them to be interchanged. The system is validated and the algorithms are integrated into the reconstruction system of Siemens Healthcare Molecular Imaging PET scanners.

This paper presents new VLSI architectures for finite impulse response (FIR) filters and discrete wavelet transform, intended for very high-speed signal and image processing. The proposed architectures, based on combining pipeline and parallel arithmetic methods, provide a new and very fast convolution approach with a reduced critical path. The key to this is a clever use of D-latches and multipliers which are efficiently distributed. Furthermore, an advanced discrete wavelet transform (DWT) approach, with an area-efficient architecture, is designed to produce one output in every clock cycle. As a result, a very high-speed is attained. The proposed structure can increase the work frequency (85%) at a low cost of additional hardware elements (55%). The systems are verified, using JPEG2000 coefficients filters, on Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices. © 2010 IEEE.

In wireless sensor networks, collection of raw sensor data at a base station provides the flexibility to perform offline detailed analysis on the data which may not be possible with innetwork data aggregation. However, lossless data collection consumes considerable amount of energy for communication while sensors usually have limited energy. In this paper, we propose a distributed and Energy efficient algorithm for Collection of Raw data in sensor networks called DECOR. DECOR exploits spatial correlation to reduce the communication energy in sensor networks with highly correlated data. In our approach, at each neighborhood, one sensor shares its raw data as a reference with the rest of sensors without any suppression or compression. Other sensors use this reference data to compress their observations by representing them in the forms of mutual differences. In a highly correlated network, transmission of reference data consumes significantly more energy than transmission of compressed data. Thus, we first attempt to minimize the number of reference transmissions. Then, we try to minimize the size of mutual differences. We derive analytical lower bounds for both these phases and based on our theoretical results, we propose a two-step distributed data collection algorithm which reduces the communication energy significantly compared to existing methods. In addition, we modify our algorithm for lossy communication channels and we evaluate its performance through simulation.

CBIR is a technique which aims at retrieving images which are perceptually and semantically meaningful by making the best use of a single or combination of visual content descriptors. The application domain of this technique generally excludes satellite images, but this paper explores the usability of CBIR on satellite imagery obtained from well known Indian Remote Sensing (IRS LISS iii sensor) satellite. One can ponder over the contribution of remotely sensed data towards diverse scientific and commercial purposes. Hence, it is reasonable to selectively identify and characterize the natural surface features, e.g., hills, rivers, trees, fields, forests and soils and recognise objects like aeroplane, oil tank, ships, etc. The interpretation and analysis of such features is a major step in transforming the remotely sensed data into information that is intelligible and usable. Object/region identification and search form challenging tasks in image interpretation which is itself a hot research area under the broad spectrum of CBIR. Computer-assisted search for an object can be done in an image by extracting one or more salient characteristics like shape, color, texture, and pattern. This paper presents a pixel by pixel search of exactly or relatively similar occurrences of the queried region/object considering a fusion of two prominent descriptors namely, texture and color as search criteria. The task has been done in a distributed fashion.
