It is becoming increasingly common to image time-resolved flow patterns through the vascular system in all three spatial dimensions using non-invasive methods. The capability to generate four-dimensional (4D) (x, y, z and time) vascular flow data is growing in several modalities. Vastly undersampled Isotropic PRojection (VIPR) is one such method using high-resolution, fast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the vasculature system during intravenous contrast injection. VIPR currently produces 4D data sets of twenty to forty frames of 256(3) voxels each, and stronger magnets will allow higher resolution time series that generate gigabytes of data. Real-time visualization and analysis of 4D data can quickly overwhelm the memory and processing capabilities of desktop workstations. 4D Cluster Visualization (4DCV) offers a straightforward, scalable approach to interactively display and manipulate 4D, reconstructed, VIPR data sets. 4DCV exploits the inherently parallel nature of 4D frame data to interactively manipulate and render individual 3D data frames simultaneously across all nodes of a visualization cluster. An interactive animation is produced in real-time by reading back the 2D rendered results, to a central animation console where the image sequence is assembled into a continuous stream for display. Basic 4DCV can be extended to allow rendering of multiple frames on one node, compression of image streams for serving remote clinical workstations, and local archival storage of 3D data frames at the cluster nodes for quick retrieval of medical exams. 4D Cluster Visualization concepts can also be extended to distributed and Grid implementations.

High resolution structure determination of biological macromolecules by electron microscopy is central to understand their biological function. These structural analyses involve processing thousands projection images taken from the specimen at different orientations. Regularized iterative reconstruction methods are well suited to deal with the extremely noise conditions found in those studies, but they are computationally expensive. parallel computing then emerges as a natural solution for those problems allowing huge jobs to be run in clusters of workstations. This work describes and analyzes the parallel implementations of five 3D iterative reconstruction algorithms, including simultaneous and block-iterative methods. The evaluation of the parallel approaches is carried put in terms of speedups and computation versus communication times. It is shown that there are specific iterative methods that are specially well suited for parallelization, with a great level of scalability and fast convergence rates. This work draws the conclusion that the use of those parallel reconstruction methods is going to be central to afford "grand challenge " problems currently unapproachable in structural biology, such as structure determination at close-to-atomic resolution by electron microscopy.

Summary form only given. The goal of the Grid Application Development Software (GrADS) project is to provide programming tools and an execution environment to ease program development for the grid. We present recent extensions to the GrADS software framework: 1. A new approach to scheduling workflow computations, applied to a 3D image reconstruction application; 2. A simple stop/migrate/restart approach to rescheduling grid applications, applied to a QR 3. A process-swapping approach to rescheduling, applied to an N-body simulation. Experiments validating these methods were carried out on both the GrADS MacroGrid (a small but functional grid) and the MicroGrid (a controlled emulation of the grid) and the results were demonstrated at the SC2003 conference.

A large variety of methods based on Partial Differential Equations (PDE) use the interface propagation. For their flexibility these methods are being more and more applied to various problems ranging from physics, fluid mechanics to control theory and computer vision. The solution of the PDE-based interface evolution is in itself a complex iterative computational task involving a great number of iterations (unknown a priori). Therefore, these applications are very demanding on the hardware and their real-time implementation is still a challenging problem. An efficient implementation could be done by using a specific parallel architecture. This paper proposes an original, entirely parallel algorithm to solve the Eikonal equation. Which is the base of applications using a weighted distance function. This algorithm allows the parallel implementation of active contours methods or continuous watershed on a specific hardware.

This paper solves the NP problem of DNA string matching using heuristics and parallelism. The current methods for approximate matching are merely different versions of dynamic programming. Dynamic programming is O(n2), and does not consider one of the most important areas in technology: parallelism. The proposed algorithm uses parallelism to solve approximate matching. It has a best-case time complexity of O(n), and has better performance in practice than dynamic programming.

In this paper we discuss an efficient methodology for the image analysis and characterization of digital images containing skin lesions. The methodology is based on the support vector machines algorithm for data classification and it has been applied to the problem of the recognition of malignant melanoma versus dysplastic nevus. Border and color based features were extracted from digital images of skin lesions acquired under reproducible conditions, using basic image processing techniques. Although larger sample sizes are necessary to resolve these issues fully, the support vector machines algorithm performed excellently achieving a high percentage of correct classification (approximately 100%). Two other classification methods, the statistical discriminant analysis and the application of neural networks were applied also to the same problem and their efficiency was compared with the support vector machines algorithm performance.

Optical probing is a non invasive tool useful to characterize the vibrations of the small moving components of microsystems (MEMS/MOEMS). This paper presents two complementary methods that can sense in-plane components of the vibration. The first one is a heterodyne interferometer, commonly used for out-of-plane component detection. The edge of the sample partially occults the laser beam and, consequently, the intensity is amplitude modulated when the sample vibrates. The electronics has been modified so that both phase and amplitude of the output signal are extracted. Actual sensitivity is about 10(-11) m/rootHz. In the second gradient method, a parallel acquisition of synchronous images is performed with a camera and a microcomputer, which stores the successive images for subsequent processing. Before digital lock-in processing, the images sequence is inter-correlated and interpolated to increase the accuracy of the method. This simple processing technique allows nanometer sensitivity. Both techniques are presented, analyzed and compared from theoretical and experimental point of view.

We present a new approach to isosurface visualization that we call "iso-splatting." We use point primitives for representing and rendering isosurfaces. The method consists of two steps. In the first step, point samples are generated throughout the volumetric domain of a scalar function. In the second step, these points are projected onto the isosurface of interest. We render the resulting point set using a surface splatting algorithm. The method can be extended to out-of-core or parallel environments. Our results show that this method can offer much greater time and space efficiency when compared with standard triangle-based methods, thereby supporting higher levels of interactivity. Parts of the algorithm can be accelerated using graphics hardware. One key advantage of this approach is that, since extraction computations are divided into two smaller phases, work can be distributed to exploit all available resources.
