We present a new approach to isosurface visualization that we call "iso-splatting." We use point primitives for representing and rendering isosurfaces. The method consists of two steps. In the first step, point samples are generated throughout the volumetric domain of a scalar function. In the second step, these points are projected onto the isosurface of interest. We render the resulting point set using a surface splatting algorithm. The method can be extended to out-of-core or parallel environments. Our results show that this method can offer much greater time and space efficiency when compared with standard triangle-based methods, thereby supporting higher levels of interactivity. Parts of the algorithm can be accelerated using graphics hardware. One key advantage of this approach is that, since extraction computations are divided into two smaller phases, work can be distributed to exploit all available resources.

A new isodisparity profile based real-time obstacle detection algorithm is introduced for an autonomous vehicle. The input disparity map is preprocessed with a look-up-table to generate a number of isodisparity profiles which uniformly distributed over the terrain. For each isodisparity profile, row histogram analysis is performed to determine the reference line. Subsampling is then conducted to select only a limited number of profile points for obstacle and slope evaluation. By comparing the row coordinate of a profile point with the corresponding reference point, obstacles are detected with subpixel accuracy. The algorithm has several advantages over other methods: 1) 3D obstacle detection can be achieved by 1D isodisparity profile segmentation; 2) no conversion of disparity map to (x,y,z) image is needed; and 3) regardless the size of the input disparity map, only a predefined number of profiles and profile points are processed for obstacle map generation. The algorithm is 60 times faster than the conventional method and is able to produce obstacle and slope maps in 4 ms from a 320/spl times/240 disparity image (Pentium iii, 850 MHz PC).

When data mining first appeared, several disciplines related to data analysis, like statistics or artificial intelligence were combined toward a new topic: extracting significant patterns from data. The original data sources were small datasets and, therefore, traditional machine learning techniques were the most common tools for this tasks. As the volume of data grows these traditional methods were reviewed and extended with the knowledge from experts working on the field of data management and databases. Today problems are even bigger than before and, once again, a new discipline allows the researchers to scale up to these data. This new discipline is distributed and parallel processing. In order to use parallel processing techniques, specific factors about the mining algorithms and the data should be considered. Nowadays, there are several new parallel algorithms, that in most of the cases are extensions of a traditional centralized algorithm. Many of these algorithms have common core parts and only differ on distribution schema, parallel coordination or load/task balancing methods. We call these groups algorithm families. On this paper we introduce a methodology to implement algorithm families. This methodology is founded on the MOIRAE distributed control architecture. In this work we will show how this architecture allows researchers to design parallel processing components that can change, dynamically, their behavior according to some control policies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The Elixir system at CFHT provides automatic data quality assurance and calibration for the wide-field mosaic imager camera CFH12K. Elixir consists of a variety of tools, including: a real-time analysis suite which runs at the telescope to provide quick feedback to the observers;a detailed analysis of the calibration data;and an automated pipeline for processing data to be distributed to observers. To date, 2.4 x 10(12) night-time sky pixels from CFH12K have been processed by the Elixir system.

This paper describes practical implementation details for a second-order approximation to the parallel model combination (PMC) algorithm with application to large vocabulary distributed speech recognition. The proposed method is capable of simultaneously adapting to noise and channel changes. A more accurate method for computing the derivatives based on numeric integration PMC is introduced. The proposed second-order adaptation algorithm requires only twice the memory and computation of standard Jacobian Adaptation (JA). This represents a 382-fold reduction in memory and a 29-fold reduction in computation. Moreover, the proposed algorithm produces models that are much closer to the PMC-derived models than standard JA.

Low-level image processing operations usually involve simple and repetitive operations over the entire input images, thus image processor may communicate with the memory system or each other frequently, hence the image processor would provide high throughput rate. In this article we present an architectural design and analysis of a parallel RISC image processor. The processor was based on PCI bus to speed up a range of image processing operations. The other characteristic of the processor is that a new three-port hostbridge is integrated into the processor. The implementation of commonly used image processing algorithms and their performance evaluation are also discussed.

In this paper, we introduce a new hierarchical interconnection network for massively parallel systems, named Fully Connected Cubic Network (FCCN). FCCN is able to emulate the popular Hypercube. FCCN has a constant nodal degree of 4 and it therefore eliminates the problem of large fanout in Hypercube. Moreover, the constant degree is an important requirement for efficiently fabricating an architecture in parallel image processing. FCCN is also a highly scalable architecture in that the existing links remain intact when new nodes are introduced. FCCN is maximally fault tolerant and it enjoys reasonably low diameter, growth of the number of links and average internodal distance. At last, FCCN is used for parallel image processing system for interconnection. The computation results show that FCCN is a high efficient interconnection network for parallel image processing.

A thinning algorithm is a very important factor in order to recognize the character, figure, and drawing Until comparatively lately, the thinning algorithm was proposed by various methods In this paper, we ascertain the point at issue of ZS, LW and WHF algorithms that are the parallel thinning algorithms The parallel thinning algorithm means the first processing doesn't have to influence to the second processing ZS algorithm has a problem that loses pixels in slanting lines and LW algorithm doesn't have one pixel width in slanting lines So we propose an enhanced parallel thinning algorithm that connects the pixels each other and preserves the end point.

Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT) and Inverse Discrete Cosine Transformation (IDCT) are important parts of many image and video compression system. Unfortunately these operations are extremely computation-intensive in a coding system, it consumes a large amount of resources for computation, especially in a real-time video coding system. In this article an efficient method for hardware based DCT/IDCT implementation is proposed. We combine the vector processing with parallel processing using distributed Arithmetic. At the same time the processing elements are pipelined to increase the processing speed and reduce the computation latency, which can also reduce the resource requirement and thus enhance the efficiency.

Based on the three-dimensional (3-D) noise model, main noise sources of single detector scanning, serial scanning, parallel scanning parallel output and staring systems are analyzed respectively. And it is assumed that all noise is Gaussian distributed. Then models are established. In addition, non-linearity is discussed and simulated. With the method of pixel-based processing, these models are implemented. Finally, the results are shown and discussed.
