In this paper the ESPRIT-iii GLORE project is described. One aim of the prject is to create a turnkey system that takes as input hundreds or thousnads of aerial video images and outputs a digital ortho-mosaic and a digital elevation model of the covered area. This '3D-image- mosaic' is to be used by the forest industry in land-use planning and forest management. The mosaic is to be used as basis for the evaluation of forest resources. It is very difficult to use the separate video images, so the mosaic is essential. The digital elevation model is important in planning of roads and visualization. The '3D-image-mosiac' is to be made automatically using the methods of global object matching or global object reconstruction. In this case an object based approach is used in the matching. This kind of methods are mostly very computation intensive. Therefore a transputer based parallel computer is used. First, the ideas behind the system are described, including the use of GPS navigation data with the on-line digitization of the images on the aircraft. Then, some examples of the method using aerial photographs are shown.

Many avionics systems use specialized parallel architectures to speed processing and to increase system reliability. The software used therein is frequently divided into tasks and executed concurrently on multiple processors under strict real-time constraints critical to the mission's successful performance. Scheduling and planning are needed for effectively managing the computational resources on such avionics architectures. Since most real-time scheduling problems are known to be NP-hard, an approximation approach that applies heuristic methods using conventional computer algorithms has been used to solve these scheduling problems. Artificial Intelligence (AI) planners have been used extensively in manufacturing scheduling and operations research. In this paper, we demonstrate the idea of using AI planners to perform scheduling through an example. We derive a solution to scheduling several image tasks on a distributed computer system, using the AI planner PRODIGY. The basic characteristics of AI planners in general and the PRODIGY solver in particular are described, the domain theory and problem specification for our problem through the PRODIGY description language PDL are presented.

This paper presents a parallel approach to a hierarchical image matching scheme using the Hausdorff distance for object recognition and localization in aerial images. Unlike the conventional matching methods in which edge pixels are considered as image feature pixels, the distance transform and the blind pointwise comparison procedure is simplified and extended in terms of the Hausdorff distance, and a guided image matching system is developed by the hierarchical detection of interesting points via a dynamic thresholding scheme for the search of the best matching between two image sets. Furthermore, the concept of remote procedure call (RPC) in distributed systems is introduced for the parallel implementation to achieve the speedup without specific software and hardware requirements.

The recent application of fractal techniques is a significant development in image compression. These fractal methods provide very high compression ratios for natural scenes. Fractal methods have the advantage of being resolution independent. However, their encoding complexity is O(n⁴) for an nxn pixel image. This prohibits their real-time application. We propose a massively parallel implementation on a pyramid machine that yields a considerable speedup. This implementation reduces the fractal encoding complexity to O(n²). Our parallel method has much better performance than other existing methods. © 1994 IEEE.

This paper details the application of a parallel genetic algorithm to the air-ground-air frequency assignment problem. Preliminary results indicate that the technique is successful in finding acceptable assignments, satisfying over 90% of constraints, for realistically sized air- ground-air frequency assignment scenarios. Comparisons are made with a classical backtracking and forward checking heuristic algorithm which is shown to be inferior to the genetic algorithm in terms of the execution time required to find reasonable frequency assignments.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are becoming increasingly popular for signal detection, often in conjunction with neural networks. The time-intensive nature of these techniques has fostered an interest in parallel implementations. Genitor is a widely used algorithm belonging to the class of steady-state GAs which are generally believed to contain little exploitable parallelism. parallel versions have involved fundamental changes to the algorithm by introducing islands. This paper describes how Genitor can be parallelized virtually as is, with nearly linear speedup, by rearranging the order of some of the genetic operations. An analytical method is derived which can be used for determining the amount of parallelism that can be achieved. An implementation for a shared-memory machine is described, and the resulting execution is shown to support the analysis.

Solving a convex set theoretic image recovery problem amounts to finding a point in the intersection of closed and convex sets in a Hilbert space. methods employing projections onto the individual sets to build a sequence converging to a point in their intersection have proven most useful to obtain set theoretic solutions. They are nonetheless sometimes difficult to implement because of the theoretical or numerical tedium associated with the computation of projections at each iteration. We propose a general parallel iterative method which processes chaotically approximate projections instead of exact ones. Weak and strong convergence results are presented and subgradient projection methods are discussed as a particular case. © 1994 IEEE.

The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is becoming a widely used tool in image processing and other data analysis areas. A non-conventional variation of a spatio-temporal 3D DWT has been developed in order to analyze motion in time-sequential imagery. The computational complexity of this algorithm is Θ(n3), where n is the number of samples in each dimension of the input image sequence. methods are needed to increase the speed of these computations for large data sets. Fortunately, wavelet decomposition is very amenable to parallelization. Coarse-grained parallel versions of this process have been design and implemented on three different architectures: a distributed network represented by a distributed network of Sun SPARCstation 2 workstations;two Intel hypercubes (an iPSC/2 and an iPSC/860);and a Thinking Machines Corporation CM-5, a massively parallel SPMD. This non-conventional 3D wavelet decomposition is very suitable for course-grain implementation on parallel computers with proper load balancing. Close to linear speedup over serial implementations has been achieved using a distributed network. Near-linear speedup was obtained on the hypercubes and the CM-5 for a variety of image-processing applications.

A new algorithm for building irregular pyramids is presented. The algorithm is based on only two basic operations on graphs, contraction and removal of edges. By making use of the concept of dual graphs, the algorithm overcomes the problem of unbounded vertex degree proper to the existing approach to building irregular pyramids. This boundedness extends the scope of parallel, degree preserving graph contraction also to irregular structures. Our method can be applied to all problems in which a 2D discrete space can be represented by a planar graph. Four-connected square grids, region adjacency graphs, Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations are examples of such plane representions. © 1994 IEEE.
