An approach for processing incomplete or uncertain data based on subspace methods is presented in this paper. The paper addresses the problem of how a subsets of a parameter vector describing a signal can be estimated. The term parameter vector refers to the coefficients in the linear combination of basis functions describing a local image neighbourhood. images are normally described locally using simple basis functions. Low order local momentums such as order 0 (the local DC component), 1 and 2 are commonly used-Low order differentiations are also useful descriptors. In densely regularly sampled images, these descriptors are easily computed using standard convolution. However, when working with irregularly sampled data or incomplete data the signal model has to be of higher order than the signal variations of interest. This is the case where only a part of the parameter vector is to be estimated. If possible, only this part of the parameter should be calculated explicitly as opposed to calculating the whole parameter vector. This paper describes such a method based on partitioning the model subspace into two parts. © 1994 IEEE.

In the case of image restoration preserving discontinuities, a priori information on image structure is represented (Geman and Geman 1984) in the form of a Markov random field consisting of a coupled field of intensity and binary line processes. We propose a new scheme achieving thermal equilibrium of the continuous intensity field. The scheme consists in adding a quasi-static noise process to the intensity field, i.e. a noise with dynamics much slower than characteristic relaxation times of the field, before going through a deterministic minimization. An algorithm is then devised upon this scheme. When associated with a classical Gibbs sampler algorithm for treatment of the line process, it performs global minimization of the energy. We show that the intensity field evolves in thermal equilibrium and we present simulations illustrating thermal equilibrium of the coupled, intensity and line, field. Our algorithm provides better energy minimization than the mixed annealing, a comparable algorithm in terms of computational loads, while retaining the same good parallel implementation perspectives.

The World Wide Web Initiative has provided a means for providing hypertext and multimedia based information across the whole INTERNET. Many applications have been developed on such http servers. At Cardiff we have developed a http hypertext based multimedia server, the Cardiff Information Server, using the widely available Mosaic system. The server provides a variety of information ranging from the provision of teaching modules, on- line documentation, timetables for departmental activities to more light hearted hobby interests. One important and novel development to the server has been the development of courseware facilities. This ranges from the provision of on-line lecture notes, exercises and their solutions to more interactive teaching packages. A variety of disciplines have benefitted notably Computer Vision, and image processing but also C programming, X Windows, Computer Graphics and parallel Computing. This paper will address the issues of the implementation of the Computer Vision and image processing packages, the advantages gained from using a hypertext based system and also will relate practical experiences of using the packages in a class environment. The paper addresses issues of how best to provide information in such a hypertext based system and how interactive image processing packages can be developed and integrated into courseware. The suite of tools developed facilitates a flexible and powerful courseware package that has proved popular in the classroom and over the Internet. The paper will also detail many future developments we see possible. One of the key points raised in the paper is that Mosaic's hypertext language (html) is extremely powerful and yet relatively straightforward to use. It is also possible to link in Unix calls so that programs and shells can be executed. This provides a powerful suite of utilities that can be exploited to develop many packages.

Ultrasonic reflection tomography borrows from echography its fundamental physical basis (exploitation of the diffracted echoes by the medium imaged) and from X tomography its numerical procedure of reconstruction. The method results from a linearization of the inverse problem, justified from an acoustical point of view, by the very small inhomogeneities of biological media. One can show that the inverse problem is reduced to a Fourier Synthesis problem based on lacunary data since the measured spectra are angulary equidistributed slices of the Fourier plane. The spectral extent of these cuts isconditioned by the frequency band of the echogrammes, that is, the high frequencies of the image correspond to the high temporal frequencies of the signals. The two problems raised are first the restauration of high frequencies (at the limit the extrapolation of the band analysed) which directly conditions resolution abilities of the instrument. Second, we have to face the problem of the angular interpolation in order to reduce reconstruction noise. Concerning the last point, we have developed a non linear filter operating on the data which contributes (in terms of energy) to the reconstruction of a given pixel. We have shown that these data are distributed on the "contributions circle" where, high frequency components mainly characterized artefacts induced by the reconstruction (backprojection) procedure. On the other hand, lower frequency components result from scattering phenomena. This distinction between useful information and artefact is revealed through a modelization of the interactions between biological interfaces and finite aperture ultrasonic beams. For the extrapolation of the band which allows good image restitution, we have integrated a deconvolution procedure based on a second order statistics filter. This enables us to reduce the input noise by a detection threshold. In addition, the in-line procedure implemented is well adapted to real-time applications. The

The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is becoming a widely used tool in image processing and other data analysis areas. A non-conventional variation of a spatiotemporal 3D DWT has been developed in order to analyze motion in time-sequential imagery. The computational complexity of this algorithm is /spl Theta/(n/sup 3/), where n is the number of samples in each dimension of the input image sequence. methods are needed to increase the speed of these computations for large data sets. Fortunately, wavelet decomposition is very amenable to parallelization. Coarse-grained parallel versions of this process have been designed and implemented on three different architectures: a distributed network represented by a distributed network of Sun SPARCstation 2 workstations: two Intel hypercubes (an iPSC/2 and an iPSC/860); and a Thinking Machines Corporation CM-5, a massively parallel SPMD. This non-conventional 3D wavelet decomposition is very suitable for coarse-grain implementation on parallel computers with proper load balancing. Close to linear speedup over serial implementations has been achieved using a distributed network. Near-linear speedup was obtained on the hypercubes and the CM-5 for a variety of image-processing applications.< >

Embedding one parallel architecture into another is very important in the area of parallel processing because parallel architectures can vary widely. Given a pyramid architecture of (4/sup N/-1)/3 nodes and height N, this paper presents a mapping method to embed the pyramid architecture into a 2/sup N-1-k//spl times/2/sup N-1-k//spl times/(4/sup k+1/+2)/3 mesh for 0/spl les/k/spl les/N-1. Our method has dilation max{4/sup k/, 2/sup N-2-k/} and expansion 1+2/(4k+1). When setting k=(N-2)/3, the pyramid can be embedded into a 2/sup (2N-1//3)/spl times/2/sup (2N-1//3)/spl times/[4/sup (N+1//3)+2]/3 mesh, and it has dilation and expansion 1+2/[4/sup (N+1//3)]. This result has can optimal expansion when N is sufficiently large and is superior to the previous mapping methods in terms of the same gauges.

parallel implementations of two computer vision algorithms on distributed cluster platforms are described. The first algorithm is a square-error data clustering method whose parallel implementation is based on the well-known sequential CLUSTER program. The second algorithm is a motion parameter estimation algorithm used to determine correspondence between two images taken of the same scene. Both algorithms have been implemented and tested on cluster platforms using the PVM package. Performance measurements demonstrate that it is possible to attain good performance in terms of execution time and speedup for large-scale problems, provided that adequate memory; swap space, and I/O capacity are available at each node.

Application of electronic scanning to a sequence of coherence-multiplexed strain sensors is proposed in this paper. The sensors consist of a cascade of HB fibers spliced with their polarization axes rotated by certain angles. We theoretically analyzed the behavior of such chains as a function of their alignment and found the optimal alignment ensuring readout of every sensor with the maximum S/N ratio. The performance of parallel and serial multiplexing configurations was experimentally studied. As a receiving interferometer we used a Wollaston prism followed by a CCD camera and an image processing system while a stepped delay line made of calcite and crystalline quartz was used to match the group delays between sensing and receiving interferometers.

The authors present a general approach of self-scheduling a non-uniform parallel loop on a distributed-memory machine. The approach has two phases: a static scheduling phase and a dynamic scheduling phase. In addition to reduce scheduling overhead, using the static scheduling phase allows the data needed by the statically scheduled iterations to be prefetched. The dynamic scheduling phase balances the workload. Data distribution methods for self-scheduling are also the focus of this paper. The authors classify the data distribution methods into four categories and present partial duplication, a method that allows the problem size to grow linearly in the number of processors. The experiments conducted on a 64-node NCUBE show that as much as 79% improvement is achieved over static scheduling on the generation of a false-color image.
